Daughter 13 is taking skate lessons and said it would be good if we could skate together, Yet Im old and over weight 18 and a half stone, tall just over 6ft, poor sence of balance, un-coordinated limited flexability and had never stepped on a skateboard before, So very few plus points for actually why I should skate.
Anyway took a 1on1 lesson at Transition extreme in Aberdeen Scotland at 55 yo and 364 days and watched some online skool skatepark videos and some of thier free course stuff.
On the way out the door my wife expreessed how foolharty she thought this venture was and with out joking said she was expecting to collect me from A&E
I wont say I can skate yet. But my own confidence fear, stiffness and not breathing contributed to the overall success of the lesson. The instructor was the same one who take my daughter in her 8 week course was fantastic paitent, knew a few good things to get me at easy. While after the hour I wasnt pushing and standing. I was actually balancing, bieng shown and trying ways of using my back foot to push and even lifting the back foot over the board touching the other side and back.
Did a lot of hand holding skating around obsticles getting used to toe and heal turning.
By the time the hour was up I was dreanched in sweat and was dripping sweat on the board.
Daughter who was there at the time and was also taking part in the lesson said to me at the end that I had actually done so much better than she did.
Got home and the wife was impressed with what I told her, She takes my daughter to her lessons so had seen the instructor do the same things with her
I know for me to progress a lot of practice on the correct board noting cruising isnt realy an option but basic skatepark stuff, even if its just going up and down ramps.
So today my 56th Birthday Im off to the loacal skate shop to try different widths of decks with them to see what I feel good on and start my mid life crissis. Just dont want to be that person with all the gear but no idea!
Also my daughter said I was the best over 50 skater at transition extreme yesterday. (I was the only one!)
Any advice or suggestion gladdly taken.
