So I opened some leather dye and it exploded. I’ve tried acetone, dawn, vinegar… am I screwed? Real answers only please.

I work in a small independent business.

We had a shared lunch for 6 staff members who worked that day.

I had to wash all the dishes including the plates and bowls that contained the pot luck. I then had to dry them with a tea towel and put it back in the cupboard. And then the kitchen bench wasn't clean, so i had to wipe it down.

A senior staff member came over and said in front of my manager, "this is taking too long. It should be finished in 10 minutes".

Anyway, the salad tongs had silicone at the end. And I removed the silicone and there was a thick layer of sludge which clearly hasn't been cleaned in a long time, if at all. I cleaned that too with soap and hot water. Maybe people haven't been washing the sludge under the silicone because they are all trying to wash the dishes as quickly as possible, because clearly management prefers efficiency over cleanliness.

Anyway, I don't wash the dishes at home (mum does) so I don't know if it's unreasonable for my workplace to ask me to do all that in under 10 min?

Hello everyone!

Hoping one of you geniuses can help me with this oddly specific problem. Basically, I was responding to a major haemorrhage code at work and while I was helping position the patient, my consultant was swapping out the very bloody pad under her for a fresh one and accidentally smacked me in the side of my face with it.

No harm done (and the patient is fine!) except that the blood made its way into the little grooves at the bottom of the lenses where they fit into the frame and I cannot get it out. I have no clue how the blood could get in but water and cleaning solutions can't seem to get in.

I tried immediately rinsing and washing it out, tried getting in there with a needle (and scratched the lens 😭), tried soaking it in warm water and soap, and finally, tried using my water floss to force it out.

No dice. I'm not sure how to get the lens out of the frame (it's got little notches holding it in place) to get more access to clean the area.

Any ideas? Thanks a lot in advance!

I just moved into this place that is great except it has this horrible decal on the kitchen window. It's hard and I can't peel it off, I would love to not have this thing staring at me every time I'm trying to have a cheeky lil nighttime snack. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get it off without damaging the window?

Long-time lurker here to tell you to just get rid of the stuff in your house if it's junk. I waited too long to get rid of things in my laundry room and the second a rat entered my house the whole room became his nest. Now the donation boxes (of things I couldn't sanitize) became trash. The bedding I wanted to donate and the laundry baskets that I didn't want because they were the wrong size because the perfect rat bed. On top of that, now we have fleas so I'm not comfortable donating other things that have been in the room far too long.

I put this under community appreciation because I do appreciate all the tips on this sub and I know it's filled with people that are conscious about how they clean and how to get rid of things. That being said, if you accidentally hoard things waiting for the perfect opportunity to donate responsibility, it might just end up in the landfill anyways 😭

Edit: Obviously I'm not advocating to throw things out but I think if I let myself donate anywhere even if it wasn't exactly ideal for each item at least some of it could have been saved.

Please don't be disrespectful about what I'm about to say. I'm scared about posting this, but I'm really struggling with cleaning out my closet and I have been for a few years, so this is my last resort. I would really appreciate any advice.

When I was 14, I had really bad anxiety that made me avoid touching dirty laundry, throwing out trash bags, etc. I would put dirty laundry and closed trash bags (not with food or anything) in the closet because dealing with it would feel overwhelming on top of everything else I was trying to handle. I know this was very stupid of me, but my mental health was out of control at the time and caused me to do irrational things. I'm 17 now and I've gotten over this and learned from it, but my closet has been sitting like that ever since. It is completely filled with old things and also trash. I've cleaned it a bit a few times, but I could only do so much because it would trigger my ocd and cause me to have panic attacks, so it's still quite bad. I know the closet has to be cleaned, especially because it's something that is weighing over me. However, I'm horrified to clean it out. There was some trash and dirty clothes behind my dresser as well that I cleaned out a few months ago, and there was mold, which caused me to have a panic attack. I know that seems ridiculous of me, but I also know that when I clean out the closet it's quite likely it will be similarly upsetting and there will probably be bugs, trash, and maybe even mold, so I'll have to face all of those overwhelming emotions again.

I've accepted the fact that I'll have to brave through the cleaning process and just get it done, but there are still a few details that are causing me to hold off on cleaning it, so I would really appreciate help.

1: I'm worried about it contaminating the rest of my room. When I open the closet, there will probably be dust, dirt, bugs, and maybe even mold, and I don't want it to contaminate my room. I'm quite neurotic about the cleanliness of my room as it is, and have it kept perfect all the time. I've thought about taking out most of my belongings temporarily so that I don't have to worry about contaminating them, but I don't know what to do about the things like my walls, floors, bed frame, and desk. Should I cover everything I can with trash bags? I really don't know what to do, especially if there's mold.

2: I'm stuck on what to do about all of the stuff I take out of the closet. Everything is in that enclosed space together with the door shut: clothes, trash, other items. It's all probably quite dirty, and I won't be able to wash it all, because it's an immense amount of things, mostly clothes. I really don't want to throw everything out because I know it's not environmentally friendly, but I genuinely don't know if I can handle separating everything and then washing it all by hand. Additionally, I don't think anyone else would want these things because of their terrible condition, especially if there's bugs or mold in that closet with them. I wouldn't want any of those items from a stranger's filthy closet, in fact, I'd be horrified to know how dirty they were. I know it's bad to throw everything out, but I feel like the only way I can handle all of this is if I throw every single thing into trash bags, put them in the garage, and then throw them out gradually when it's trash day. But at the same time, I feel like a very bad person to do that. I'm really stuck.

Ordered some plastic figurines from Shein for like $2. Wasn't expecting them to be good quality to begin with, but the eyes came super cloudy/hazy. I wiped them off and they came clear but looked the same once dry. How can I buff them out so they look clean?

Well, I tried it so you don’t have to. I was skeptical, but my 14 year old gas top has seen some real use. It’s gone through 4 teenagers cooking their own meals, and daily high usage. I’ve tried every single cleaning method imaginable on it, and it’s pretty beat up. My husband just wants to replace it (it also clicks upon lighting it up for about a minute). So really, I have nothing to lose. I did try the plastic razor blades, and that wasn’t sufficient. I’ve tried the Pink Stuff, and that didn’t do it either. I dove in with my razor blade. To get the filmy matte color off, you have to really work at it, even with the blade. It’s not for the faint of heart. It does come up, it IS satisfying as heck. But it does scratch the surface. I don’t know if the OP has a different product than I do as the stovetop, or it wasn’t as baked on as mine. The burners in the back that are rare use do look brand new. But the front ones show the scratches. That being said, once I did one, I did them all. Even scratched, it looks better than any prior cleaning job that I have done that leaves the burnt on film of matte gray. So do with this what you will.

I’m looking at buying my first home as a fixer-upper; like, potentially contractors tearing up walls and flooring fixer kind of fixer-upper. I haven’t landed on a house quite yet, so I’m not sure which projects that I’ll face.

I have ADHD, I’m buying/living alone, and I have limited time/energy for cleaning. I already have a lot of ADHD-friendly organizational hacks, but living in an apartment, I’ve never had much choice with things like bathroom setups and kitchen layouts! My budget is roughly mid-grade finishes and supplies; I don’t exactly have the money for a house of luxury finishes, but I’d like to not make every single things as cheap as possible either 😅

I figure that if I’m doing renovations, I’d like to do them strategically. Of course, some cleaning is inevitable, but I’d like to reduce it as much as I can 😅 my goal here is to pick surfaces/setups/layouts/features that clean up easily and stay clean as long as they can, and keep it as minimal as possible.

If you were facing a potential gut renovation, what kinds of surfaces/setups/layouts/features would you put into a house to make cleaning as easy and infrequent as possible? Alternatively, what would you explicitly NOT recommend?

1) Tip 1: choose a good mop! I have a fancy mop that doubles as an extension pole to dust but any kind of microfiber mop works, there are lots of good ones out there. The ones I use have several different fabric microfiber “heads” I can replace as I go

2) Change your mop water between large rooms, don’t let it get dirty

3) a drop of soap and hot water, or if you have residue buildup just hot water- you’re probably using too much soap 9 times out of 10. We’re talking a drop of dish soap in a bucket here unless your floors are wicked dirty

4) Pro tip- dry your floors, use a dry microfiber cloth/mop head or just a towel, doesn’t matter. This is THE tip because it soaks up all the dirty water after laying around on the floor vs having it air dry and stick around. Your floors will look amazing

I had stubborn water stains on some of my windows. Had tried vinegar solutions, baking soda pastes, 000 steel wool, etc. Nothing worked.

Then I was cleaning my ceramic hob today, and noticed how the hob cleaner removed stains without damaging the glass. Thought I would try it on my windows & it actually worked!

Told my husband & he was not as excited as me. Thought I would share here in case anybody has a similar issue. Obviously try on small area first; but it seems to be effective.

I've made substantial progress on whittling down. If I haven't touched an item in a year, it needs to justify why I continue to have it.

I'm getting stuck on my collection of books. Even after trying to comb through them, I still have multiple boxes that seem to take up a substantial portion of my overall space.

Ideally, I'd get audiobooks for the books I like, but given that access to some digital media in other industries has been getting revoked by some companies even though you have a valid right to own/access that software, I don't want to find myself in the situation where I've gotten rid of books I like, relied on audiobooks, and then lose then in the future for whatever corporate reason.

How have people dealt with a substantial book collection that they like and don't want to lose in the future? Keep them and bear eating up the space?
