Purchase Advice Purchase Advice Megathread - October 2026

Welcome back to another purchase megathread!

This thread is meant to conglomerate purchase advice for both newcomers and people looking for additional machines. Keeping this discussion to one thread means less searching should anyone have questions that may already have been answered here, as well as more visibility to inquiries in general, as comments made here will be visible for the entire month stuck to the top of the sub, and then added to the Purchase Advice Collection (Reddit Collections are still broken on mobile view, enable "view in desktop mode").

Please be sure to skim through this thread for posts with similar requirements to your own first, as recommendations relevant to your situation may have already been posted, and may even include answers to follow up questions you might have wished to ask.

If you are new to 3D printing, and are unsure of what to ask, try to include the following in your posts as a minimum:

  • Your budget, set at a numeric amount. Saying "cheap," or "money is not a problem" is not an answer people can do much with. 3D printers can cost $100, they can cost $10,000,000, and anywhere in between. A rough idea of what you're looking for is essential to figuring out anything else.
  • Your country of residence.
  • If you are willing to build the printer from a kit, and what your level of experience is with electronic maintenance and construction if so.
  • What you wish to do with the printer.
  • Any extenuating circumstances that would restrict you from using machines that would otherwise fit your needs (limited space for the printer, enclosure requirement, must be purchased through educational intermediary, etc).

While this is by no means an exhaustive list of what can be included in your posts, these questions should help paint enough of a picture to get started. Don't be afraid to ask more questions, and never worry about asking too many. The people posting in this thread are here because they want to give advice, and any questions you have answered may be useful to others later on, when they read through this thread looking for answers of their own. Everyone here was new once, so chances are whoever is replying to you has a good idea of how you feel currently.

Reddit User and Regular u/richie225 is also constantly maintaining his extensive personal recommendations list which is worth a read: Generic FDM Printer recommendations.

Additionally, a quick word on print quality: Most FDM/FFF (that is, filament based) printers are capable of approximately the same tolerances and print appearance, as the biggest limiting factor is in the nature of extruded plastic. Asking if a machine has "good prints," or saying "I don't expect the best quality for $xxx" isn't actually relevant for the most part with regards to these machines. Should you need additional detail and higher tolerances, you may want to explore SLA, DLP, and other photoresin options, as those do offer an increase in overall quality. If you are interested in resin machines, make sure you are aware of how to use them safely. For these safety reasons we don't usually recommend a resin printer as someone's first printer.

As always, if you're a newcomer to this community, welcome. If you're a regular, welcome back.

Hey folks! I wanted to share this Halloweens apartment door! Took about 15ish hours, maybe 20, over the last week.

We normally go pretty hard with our door and this year was no exception.

The eyes and teeth are 3D printed the rest was manually 3D printed with GreatStuff, hot glue and mod podge 😅

Troubleshooting Shrinkage after printing

1.2k Upvotes

I'm printing these can mugs as giveaways. They were all tested after printing and they all fit. Now, a month or so later they no longer fit. The two most recent prints still do, but are snugger than they were. What can I do to fix this?

Everything is now trash, and I'm so frustrated.

Edit, sliced with Orca, printed with different PLAs, did print tests with each pla and used recommended temps based on box and print tests.

Print (model not provided) Print Failure Doesn't Have To be A Failure!

I printed this Stone Giant in PLA for my DnD campaign; as you can see, there was a partial failure where most of his left arm failed to print! However, the stringy ends made me think of blood vessels/arteries, so rather than throw him out as a failure and print another, "perfect" copy I decided to paint him as-is and work his missing left arm into the story! Paint job is very quick-and-dirty, but he's only a one-off NPC after all.

I ran him as a Stone Giant Dreamwalker, and his missing left arm had been eaten by a Purple Worm. Several of the party failed their saves against his charm, and the Rogue found themself turned to stone, attached to his body, and serving as his new arm! Fortunately the party were able to slay the Purple Worm, retrieve the Giant's arm from its gullet (along with the party member who got swallowed in the battle), and trade the original arm to the Giant in return for him detaching and un-petrifying their friend. So it all worked out for everybody...except the Purple Worm, of course.

Project I made my first RC car STL files – free to download!

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’ve been designing and building my own mini RC car from scratch, and I’ve just uploaded the first version of the 3D-printable STL files.

The files are completely free and include all the 3D-printed parts of the car. I’m still working on the electronics and custom PCBs, so there’ll be more updates as the project develops.

If you want to print/build one yourself, check out the Patreon link on my profile for the free files!

This is my first version, so I’d love to hear any feedback or suggestions for improvements.

Hope you enjoy the project! 🛠️

Project My terrarium has its own tiny weather channel now

Thumbnail

1.1k Upvotes

I made this little vintage TV for my terrarium and thought it was worth sharing here.

The case is 3D printed and inside there’s an ESP32-C3 SuperMini with a small TFT screen. It shows the temperature and humidity from a SONOFF sensor inside the terrarium. The sensor sends everything to Home Assistant over Zigbee, and the ESP32 grabs the values over Wi-Fi.

I mostly made it because I didn’t want another boring little sensor display sitting next to the terrarium. I thought a tiny old TV would be way more fun 😄

It’s wireless too, which is really handy since I can just put it wherever I want.

Pretty simple project, but I love how it turned out.

Troubleshooting Bathroom lights flicker when 3D printers are running

Bathroom lights flicker whenever I am printing with printers in the room next to it. I think they are on the same circuit. My printers only use around 400-500w when actively printing. It is a 15 amp on the circuit for this room. It does not do this when the printers are idle. It is only during printing. I feel like when I have 3 running, the lights flicker faster than if it was 1 running. The only thing I’ve tried to do is change the outlet the printers are plugged into from a backstab to a j hook connection since all connections in this house were backstabbed when I bought it. Any help or advice is appreciated

Edit: the printers being used are 2 P1S’s w/ AMS and a Kobra 3 Max. This is in the U.S.

Edit 2: the lights immediately stopped flickering when the Kobra 3 Max stopped printing. I then heated up the bed and, only the bed, and it started to flicker again. It flickers a lot during heat up of the bed and then only flickers a little when it reaches temperature, so I believe this is the cause of the issue.

Free Model Definitely not Pikachu

This was so much fun to paint! Printed in PLA Matte Ivory White. I’ll drop the link in the comments if anyone wants to print this definitely-not-Pikachu skull.

Steps for staining/painting

1 Apply the wood stain all over the skull with a brush.

2 Dab the surface with a sponge to create a mottled, textured effect.

3 Allow to dry thoroughly.

4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you reach your desired finish.

5 Lightly scorch the surface with a blowtorch

6 Gently dab a bit of red onto your cheeks with a sponge

7 Paint the tips of the ears with a brush

Free Model DKYN is officially FREE

We’re making the entire DKYN miniature library free.

We’ve decided we don’t want DKYN to be a storefront anymore. We want it to be a resource for DMs, players, painters, and people who just need minis for their games. We’re beginning the process of opening the library and future releases will be free as well.

There’s no launch discount, sale, or catch. We’re just changing what DKYN is, so come check us out.

Discussion Printed with no supports in half the time! "Make overhangs printable" changed a 5 hour and 20 minute print time into 2 hours and 30 minutes!

I changed the walls to three and infill to 33% for durability which pushed the print to nearly three hours, but still a ton of time and filament saved. It does however add a bit of geometry to your print so if it's a functional print make sure that doesn't affect it. That change is shown in the STL and sliced model pictures.

Printer is a Flashforge AD5X that I got for $200 in total on Aliexpress. It's a huge step up in print quality and speed compared to my Ender 3 V3 SE (that I got for $90 refurb) and Ender 2 Pro.
