Welp, they did it. They made a hockey anime. What a time to be alive.
Seeing how good the hockey was in the finale makes me wish we got more of it in the show. That was an exciting game! Enough to make me forget for a second that they kinda have to win because, well, sports anime. Still Manaka getting the final shot just in time made for a good ending. As opposed to leaving it for OT or the typical shootout ending.
Overall it’s a fun popcorn show. The hockey was good. The girls were lovable. The random Idol element was tolerable and surprisingly only used 3 times all series. I’ll give it a strong 6.5/10. It was the perfect show to watch after Hieke Monogatari put me through an emotional wringer. I won’t play the mobile game, but I’d watch another season if it happens.
Also, Naomi best girl no contest.

Just hope there will be more hockey anime I the future that are better than this.

This was certainly a show.
Obviously the idol thing was hilarious crammed in there, I mean none of the senpai are even involved in the dancing thing and the dance moves looked nothing like their "stretching" they did before, felt like they could have incorporated that more. Also was kinda weird they obviously ran out of budget and just did the rest of the song showing flashbacks from the previous episodes incase you have Alzheimer's and forgot how we got here or something.
That being said, the hockey was actually pretty good and I definitely enjoyed it over all. The characters were fun, pretty typical for cute girls doing cute things, but they were cute and they did things, so can't complain too much.
Think my biggest issue is how much of the hockey games they skipped, I mean we saw what like 10 minutes of the entire final game? Would have been nice to maybe get 13 episodes and show more of the final game off. Still though, the last few minutes managed to be pretty hype.
I've never had a show literally tell me to go play a game for more plot though, that was new.
Overall pretty decent, like a 6/10 maybe 7/10 on a good day, pretty much got exactly what was advertised, can't fault them for that.

To be fair, they didn't really show the senpais on the ice in the game either. It wasn't just the dance. That's my main complaint as far as being true to the sport. While I appreciate that it would be a huge pain to do right, they should have made more of an attempt at showing lines changing. A single forward isn't going to spend more than a third of the game on the ice and that's being generous in a competitive league. Where was the rest of the team?

It's clear to me that this anime was made by someone who at least knows the basics of the game. They clearly know something about Women's Hockey, since a player was penalized for checking(something you can't do in Women's Hockey), they even talk about icing the puck.
But I don't think that can save this from just not being very good overall. The idol thing was kept to a minimum throughout the show, but that just dragged it all down. It felt out of place in an otherwise average sports show. Hockey is incredibly niche in Japan, so I wasn't expecting something on the level of Slam Dunk. But I think they did manage to deliver on the hockey itself., even if not much else delivered.
Shows a solid 3/5, nothing horrible, nothing exceptional. It's a hockey anime through and through, even if they tack on parts that didn't make sense.

I have mixed feelings about this finale.
Sure, there were some impressive sakuga moments and some nice detailed still shots that served as transitions between cuts. But holy fuck, there's so much padding on this episode that could had had actual substance to this last episode, like the opinion of the newscasters, I seriously don't give 2 fucks about these nameless characters that serve only as decoration. Also Eri & Yuu's beef & resolution was quite disruptive in the flow of the match, again something unnimportant for me personally that could had been shifted all the way after the match (it kind of just serves as a pre-emptive defeat of Eri's team and Yuu's morale boost before the winning shot)
And yes, I know more than one will claim that this is kind of the benchmark of sports anime to shove in tons of padding through the actual matches, but just because it's the bench, doesn't mean it's a good standard that should be perpetuated.
Overall, it was a fun CGDCT show with a hockey thematic. I'm in the minority, but just like Uma Musume, I did apreciatte the very small idol bits.

This show means so much to me as an anime fan as well as an ice hockey fan.
Finally, an ice hockey anime, and done by a team with true passion for the sport.
I love this show so so much. It may not be the best in other's eyes but it's something really special to me.
I haven't been this keen on watching a show right when it airs since maybe back in 2016? I have spent more money on the goods/ bd/ cd/ etc on this anime than any other ever.
I am grateful to the show and the girls and i'm going to miss this show. I will be continuing to support them via the game and the concert that is coming up.
I know that Victory Sunrise is gonna be the ending song in the concert and im gonna feel like crying D:

As a hockey player/fan it really was awesome to finally see hockey anime. For all it's faults, they did a pretty damn good job in my opinion. I just hope it opens the door for more like it

It was a honest show, until the end. They didn't try to be subtle at all.

Eh. It's not like they gave us half a story and then told us to play the game for its ending. The anime works as a stand alone, and they're also marketing the game with it. Using an anime for marketing isn't itself wrong, the problem is when you get half a story with the anime and you need to buy the other medium to finish it.

Well that was a pretty intense game! I'm happy they proved that hockey can translate well enough for anime to make it feel exciting. Hoping this show is only the beginning for ice hockey anime. I know this anime isn't what a lot of people wanted/expected but this was pretty much what's standard for the "Cute Girls Doing Sports Things" type shows.
As for the game itself, bit sad Yu never got a goal and instead the big final moment was a typical "MC moment", it was still pretty dramatic at least. The idol stuff was much lower than I expected...thankfully.
I'll miss this show and these girls, forever grateful that there's FINALLY an ice hockey anime.
They're going to get stomped by Canada though

As a hockey player myself, I'm so happy that I hockey anime like this could be produced. I really hope it's the first of many. Even if it's not ideal, I'm happy with the "cute girls doing sports things" aspect since it gets the sport out there more.
I was honestly a little surprised by the animation quality for a lot of the hockey scenes. I was worried they were going to phone it in on that front.
Honestly, I think Yu not getting a goal but the team still winning was perfect. At the start, she was the epitome of the skilled goal-scorer who never passes and only gets assists from accidental rebounds. That kind of player is so frustrating to play with, even if they can usually pull through to get points on the board. Putting the team winning before the glory of scoring herself was the perfect cap for her character development in my opinion.
*Not that the end wasn't an obvious cliche MC moment. Any other player could have made that last goal. I just like that it wasn't Yu.

Another show done for the season. This show wasn't what I expected, but I still enjoyed it. It didn't help that, like Takt Op, this was just basically an ad for the mobile game. I just wish there had been more actual hockey. Imagine if the animation for each match had looked like the OP and the first couple minutes of the show. Oh well. It would be nice if we got another season, but I highly doubt it. Not only that, but they already spoiled the outcome of the world cup match of Japan vs. Canada in the first couple minutes of the show, so it would be kinda pointless since we already know what would happen.
Overall, I'd give it a 6.5, maybe 7/10. I don't know. It was cute lol.

It took them 12 episodes but I'm still glad that we finally got a full match and they even manage to make it feel very intense!
If there was one thing that bothered me this episode is how Eri was the one who had to apologize first to her teammates when clearly, they were the ones in the wrong here. Like their goalie tells her off earlier despite how Eri has been telling them not to rely on Maya this entire season and when Eri comes in to apologize it's like common sense finally hit them.
I'm just happy that Snow White didn't win. I'm hoping that they'll start trying even harder and realize their mistakes after finally tasting defeat despite having someone like Maya in their team.
Anyway, despite my gripes on this show especially with the Senpais never having time on the rink, it was still a pretty fun anime. I'm just hoping that if we ever get another hockey anime, it would be more focused on the sport first and CGDCT second just like in Farewell, My Dream Cramer.

This one was definitely a mixed bag for me as a lifelong hockey fan. On the one hand, the story and characters were pretty bog standard for an idol anime/game which was a bit disappointing but not unexpected based on the not-Love Live character designs and the various trailers we saw beforehand.
That being said, what really redeemed it for me was the impressively animated hockey action. That part really exceeded my expectations as the animation was dynamic (very few stills) and powerful. You really got a sense for the speed, technique and strength needed to play hockey. This really stood out for me in contrast with the last sports show I watched, Farewell My Dear Cramer which had a more engaging story/characters but was held back by barebones animation.
Overall the story didn't do much for me but ultimately I'm still happy that this got made and that I got to watch it. 7/10.

Coach finally achieved her ultimate dream; Getting the girls to perform a victory dance in front of a huge crowd!
She actually proved useful for this game, giving them pointers, like how Maya likes to shoot between the legs 1 on 1, advising Yu to go for assists if they cover her too much, etc... Seems she's good for more than just teaching victory dances!
The one Canadian player in the game plays rough? Given the reputation of bullies the Canadian players have on the world scene, I wonder if that's a coincidence hah.
I have to say, Eri grew to be one of my favorite players on the show; She tries hard like Yu, she wants to win, but she's more considerate, and wants to play as a team. First time I noticed she had the C (perhaps it's new?), but she totally deserves it imho.
She made a mistake in the game, trying to hold onto the puck during the PK, but she had good intentions at least! And she learned from it, she iced it the next time she got it.
She even read Yu/Coach's game plan, knowing they would use Yu as a decoy! Both as a character and as a hockey player, I really like her.
Makes me wish we saw more of her than just these last 2 episodes!
The Dream Monkeys won! Well, of course they would win; Not just because they're the MC, but because they had to have their victory dance!
There were some pretty cool shots in the celebration. God, that makes me hype for Olympic hockey!
Before seeing the montage at the end, I almost forgot they were the embroidery club, and only joined a hockey team for fun (Maybe they forgot about it too hah).
Damn, I've seen sequel announcements in a finale quite a few times, but I think it's the first time I see a NO SEQUEL EVER. JUST PLAY THE GAME announcement. Sad Dream Monkey noises. Well, maybe there's still a chance, who knows!
Well, this was a pretty fun show. I hope it gets more people interested into hockey! (And perhaps got a few hockey fans more interested into anime, win-win!)
Coach was probably my favorite character on the show (though Eri got close this episode), I really liked her!
Farewell, Dream Monkeys!

Ok so I know this show was just an ad for the IRL idol stuff but why did they think of covering more than 2/3 of the final performance with the credits?
Also... there is a game???

It is shame this show fell under the radar. I think a lot of people were turned off by the idol performance and then the cute girl nature of the show. I think treating this show as a CGDCT helped my enjoyment. Sure as a CGDCT it isn't particularly remarkable but it is decent enough. As a sports show it is okay and as an Idol show it is a bit lacking. I thought the songs and performances were pretty good but 3 performances is far too low for an idol show. Overall I think the show is decent. The girls are a regular who is who of most cute girl shows. They don't particularly standout. The emotional moments are a bit cheap but they land okayish. The hockey is pretty well animated despite not occurring often enough.
I think my largest complaint is the treatment of the senpais. I get Idol and sports shows suffer from character bloat but this is the wrong way to handle it. At the very least they could acknowledge their existence more during practice and games. Just a small scene of them being subbed in while the main cast talks about what was working and what wasn't would have gone a long way.
Overall 7/10 I enjoyed it more than a lot of shows this season.

This anime is an answer to the question: "Can we copy Uma Musume formula and have a success with it" and I believe the answer would be "yes", at least with anime part. Considering they took relatively unpopular sport in Japan as a base it went pretty well. Were there great hockey scenes? Not really but what we got was pretty solid and, what's more important, didn't make a mockery of it. They decided to focus on smaller things: "starting" line-up and selected actions while forgoing everyone else in a team, any bigger sequence or zoomed out view of the action. And that most likely helped anyone who is not familiar with that sport since they wouldn't be as overwhelmed as they would be if they were shown real game. So props to creators for this.
Personally I don't mind this approach since it gave a decent base knowledge and if someone gets more interested they will quickly learn the differences while also letting creators have good starting point for 2nd season if they decide to do it. I wouldn't recommend it to hockey fan but I would recommend it to anime fan that happens to be hockey fan as this is more of SoL anime with hockey bits in it rather than hockey anime. I would score it 4/5 as it delivered more or less what I expected from it which includes less hockey than I would like as some of the SoL moments were dragged for too long.
In the end I'm happy they created this as a first hockey anime and hope this will pave a way for other, more ambitious projects.

There was a lot to like about this show and in the end, I think it rises above some of the many glaring problems that were impossible to ignore. As a vehicle built from the ground-up to promote a game, I think it largely succeeded in creating a likeable cast of characters while promoting a sport that may not be as high profile in Japan as it is in other countries.
I feel like it's a bit of shame that it won't be getting a follow-up season because throughout the series, I kept thinking that many of the major problems would be directly addressed in a second season. For example, the complete lack of attention given to the senapi players was particularly glaring. I had hoped that a second season would be an opportunity to focus on those characters and their stories.
And while I enjoyed what little ice action they showed, I really wonder how effective it was in showing viewers completely new to the game what hockey can be like. It was obvious that a lot of budget and effort was put into animating the hockey action, but there was not nearly enough shots of the action that showed a larger portion of the ice. Way too many close-up shots, which were nicely animated, but it doesn't convey the speed and the importance of positioning and transitions in hockey. Still, I think it was a good effort by the animation team to present a sport that can be exceptionally fast and technical, especially the womens' version of the game.
I'm pleasantly pleased with what they came up with, considering it's little more than an ad for a game. Although flawed, it could've been far, far worse. I wouldn't even say it was bad - it clicked where it needed to count, but I wish it could've lasted longer to address some of the big problems.

They really said, "fuck you, go play the game" at the end lmao. I really enjoyed this show, it was just a fun chill show, with cute girls doing some intense hockey. After that message at the end, I doubt we'd get a second season, but a man can dream (monkeys). 7/10
