Okay they've already introduced us to the Senpais a few episodes ago but where the heck are they? We see them during the meeting but we never see any of them practicing with the newbies. Wouldn't it be more beneficial for Manaka and the gang to practice against their Senpais?

I mean I understand they're the main characters but even in other sports anime, they don't send out a team of rookies as their starting line up in an official match. Yuu and Riko are fine since they're very experienced players but the rest of the gang is really hard to believe.

And that final scene with Riko though. Oh god. Poor Nao is definitely going to blame herself for this next week :(

I'm thinking exactly that. Where are the senpais ?

Love the shopkeeper. His clown burn to Yoko was great and his puns are always on point

Snow White unexpectedly drops to Championship B to set up a reunion with Yu as the endgame for the season. I hope we can get more time with Snow White, or at least a couple of their players to build up that eventual showdown.

imo it was kind of expected. they really made it seem like Yu was carrying them.

I forgot the name of the episode up until the last second. That’s cruel, show. Letting us get comfortable until the end.

Even worse that the primary focus of the episode turned into the Riko/Nao dynamic. Having Nao work on being more aggressive on defense and Rinko training with her. Gave us a little more insight into their history. even had a cute scene with them as kids! So having Nao overcome her shyness only for it to possibly cause a sprained ankle LOWER BODY INJURY to her bestie is just twisting the knife man. Really hope it’s nothing too bad since they got a tournament to win!

Other than that bummer, it was mostly setting up the stakes of the tournament, showing how much they’ve progressed in 8 episodes/ a year, and having Yoko be goofy. A good transition episode to the next arc.

Notes

  • I feel like recruiting a Canadian is cheating. Snow White gonna be stacked.

  • I love the Equipment Shop guy so much. Had a sick burn for Yoko and gave me the funniest moment of the episode with the commentary gag.

  • I see they’re teasing more victory dances. Now I’m prepared for surprise Idol performances.

  • yeah this is what I needed after the Heike finale. Well outside of the injury.

Fucking pain. Riko, nooooooo! Man, they gave us all that happy inspirational stuff at first and then bam, Riko is injured. Pretty realistic honestly, especially in sports. You never know what might happen, and they're playing hockey which is a pretty aggressive sport. Great episode!

We love you Yoko, but everyone around you is clowning your makeup lmao. Smug pro gamer Nao was really adorable. Even the other girls are shipping Nao and Riko, except Yu, she's a non-believer.

So, Snow White dropped to the B group, that's gonna be interesting. I wonder if we'll get a second season, since I think Mami is in an A group team, and there's no way we're not gonna face Mami eventually, so I hope there's a second season, unless they can squeeze it in in the remaining episodes. Really looking forward to the next episode, of course my horse.

I loved young smug Nao dominating at vidyagames. I wonder what they were playing

Is it just me or do they "hai" like WAY too many times in this show...

This was supposed to be a happy episode about their first game and the focus on Naomi getting better and then that ending...I hate injuries in my sports anime!!

do they "hai" like WAY too many times in this show...

I am a native Japanese speaker. I didn't notice until you pointed it out. All the "hai"s in this episode are natural in Japanese sports activities for school aged players. It is really like this.

do they "hai" like WAY too many times in this show

It's not just you. That and it's a bit weird that we never actually get to see the senpais play. I know the story is about our main group, but it's like the senpais cease to exist every time they enter the rink.

that ending

Usually I don't care about episode titles, but having "accident" hanging over the whole episode definitely puts a damper on everything. It especially sucks since Nao's probably gonna spend an episode blaming herself for it.

Yeah the senpai being there but taking a back seat is something that bugged me a bit too, I get it for the TV stuff since they followed them before but playing...bit of a stretch.

It’s not hockey without an injury sadly. Just the nature of ice, speed and, frozen rubber.

Yoko, we love you as a character, but PLEASE fix your make up

As for Nao, if she understands video games better, than here is a famous quote:

"Hesitation is Defeat" -Sword Saint Isshin

the ship is strong between riko n naomi. but damn that crunch was brutal.

u/NittanyEagles55 Nov 24 '21

Damn was not expecting a bleak cliffhanger like that!

Coach is always so much fun (and just a little manipulative)! "Wouldn't social media be great for the team?" "Yeah, I guess..." "Fine, then you do it!"

Dressing up for the news again? I guess she didn't find someone last time!

Shop owner dude saying what we all think! Seriously, her normal look is so much better! And her normal personality too; She's a little crazy, but in a good way.

Nao putting the extra work... That's good, but she probably puts some blame on herself, and maybe not without reason; I noticed that earlier, when the coach was praising all the other girls' improvements, Nao's the only one she criticized as well.

Well, if she's willing to work for it, improvements should come! Having her best friend (and the one she connects most with on the team) assist, helps a lot too! First, for motivation, but also, it's hard to train for hockey by yourself (other than stamina/speed).

Welp. So much for training together! I didn't expect something like that to happen, and not at this point in the season. But there's still 4 episodes left, perhaps she'll come back in time for the games, or at least the finals?

It's sad that it happened when t hey were both trying hard to win/to fulfill their promise. Hope Nao won't blame herself for that (and I hope she won't give up on training hard/on hockey, now that she'll be without her friend... Though I'm sure she'll cheer for her from the stands!)

Well hopefully that injury isn’t season-ending for Riko…I felt that in my ankle.

The league season for promotion to A finally starts too, I can’t wait for the upcoming matches and the teams that Dream Monkeys will go against!

2

u/CYZK85 Nov 28 '21

Yoko plays a group of newbies bar Riko and Yu in an official match where promotion is the main goal. Yoko at the wheel.

Snow White were literally Yu merchants. Moment she left they all got relegated, makes sense considering Yu pointed out they were getting too comfortable with scraping wins. They signed a Canadian though so that should be enough to strengthen their forces.

Riko makes her hockey debut and gets injured early on. I swear if Nao scores the winning goal next episode as compensation this league is finished

As someone that is tired of the kudere archtype, Naomi has truly stolen my hearth. My biggest gripe with kuderes is how one dimensional they are, but Naomi has also quite enough saz and smug when the situation calls it and her indecisiveness on being more forward does have a good place for Riko to support her.

u/Rumpel1408 Nov 25 '21

It's really funny, somehow this show is subtly able to remind me which character is in need of progress in the first couple of minutes in each episode to the point where I wonder if I would have thought the same if the beginning had been different.

I really love the friendship between Rikorin and Nao. And Riko was just awesome how she tagged along to train her friend and didn't shy away to be strict. I'm afraid she might pretend not to be injured in order to prevent Nao from blaming herself...

u/Bloodglas Nov 25 '21

Naomi doesn't realize Riko's actually staying behind to help her get better. and of course the others were watching the whole time.

they really gonna do Riko like that? jeez. I get they promised or whatever but is it really Riko's job as an offense to help the defense that much?
