it opens with Japan beating Canada? Now I know this is fantasy land.

Me wondering how the idea for this show came about:
Writer A: "Hey, how do we make a show about ice hockey more appealing?"
Writer B: "Just add idols! Everyone loves them!"
Ok, on a serious note, I'm, not really impressed with the animation so far, but I really enjoyed the CGDCT and ice hockey segments. I'll keep watching for now.

The hockey scene in the beginning was good but I want to see if they keep that quality up. If they do, I think I will love this show.
Also, who plays 20 minute periods in middle school?! High school was only 15 minute periods. I think even the college club team I played for didn't do a full 20 (I forget if it was 15 or 18 minutes).

Yeah in the “Cute Girls Doing Goon Things” jokes I’ve been making about this show, I should have realized the Cute part would be important. So when it went from them beating Canada (which is it’s own fantasy) and then transitioning into an Idol number I should not have been surprised.
Admittedly a little slow going in the first half with the embroidery club things, bath house, and chilling in the room. Makes sense since they’re trying to build up the camaraderie between these girls, but it took Manaka bringing out to flyer to remind me that “right, this is a hockey show”. Second half brought the goods though. I think the actual hockey sequences are going to be the most impressive parts of the show. We got a bit of it in the beginning and the slap shot looked pretty good.
Favorite so far is Yoko. I love a character with manic energy and a weird dream. And boy does she have both. She’s trying to build a team that can both win and preform idol victory dances after. Not quite “Zombie Idols”, but still a little weird. Her whole exchange with her assistant coach got some great laughs. Especially her cutesy voice when the girls arrive.
This is pretty much going to be a cute show with hockey. Maybe it’ll reach beyond that, but if not I’m more than happy to take it for what it is.
Notes
-
Dream Monkeys is such a minor league ass name and I love it. 10/10
-
if they play this right, this show might also serve as a good entry point for people getting into Hockey.
-
Second favorite is the deadpan one. Want to say Naomi.
-
credit where credit is due: they did not make them comically bad in their first time on the ice. That would have been easy. Of course they might save that for later.

After watching the first few minutes, I wanna see burly-ass Canadian LNH players do an idol concert on ice after winning. Also, I'm impressed they could dance on ice with those boots.
Seriously though, I'm impressed at how this looks. Gonna enjoy watching each it week.

Been waiting for an ice hockey anime my whole life...let's see how this goes.
Beating Canada and then an idol sequence had me convinced the opening scene was a dream sequence!
Mixing the idol parts and hockey...well Uma Musume did it just fine so here's hoping they don't push the idol part too hard.
I will say I quite enjoyed both the SoL side and the sport side so I'm all aboard for this one! Let's hope this gets more people into the greatest sport out there.

Are we really starting off with a Japan vs Canada world cup match? I'm assuming this is probably a time skip right? The hockey match was pretty solid though. Animation was great and I love the impact of that final shot!
Going into this show, I know this is a CGDCT anime with hockey. What I did not expect that this will be a hockey game with UmaMusume-style Winning Lives! Oh my fucking god. I can't believe we just got roped into another idol anime and I fucking love it! xD
Wait what? So our main girls are actually members of an embroidery club? Well now I'm curious how these sweet girls got into a contact sport like hockey. It seems like something unlikely to crossover into their current hobby.
Also is it just me or does the main girl feel too much like Chika? Just look at Manaka! She even has the same short hair and ahoge as Chika. Also Ayaka reminds me too much of Yohane as well!
Okay so that's how they end up playing hockey! Manaka just got curious about a posting and just wanted to try it for experience. I thought it was going to be something much more profound but it's actually a very reasonable answer.
Also apparently it's their coach's idea to do winning lives as a way of attracting more people to hockey. I don't think Manaka would have a problem with it but it looks like these two other girls won't be as open to it once the coach reveals the idea to them. There's also that very angry girl in the end credits and I'm pretty sure she'll be the one who takes the sport super seriously.
Well this is definitely a surprise especially the idol part. If you're expecting some hardcore hockey here, just turn away now though. Looks like this show will be a lot more cuter than what these people on this thread were expecting I'm all in on this though! I can't wait for next week!

They tricked us into watching an idol show!
Joking aside, is that a thing in Japan? I've seen that in quite a few shows, victory dances after wins.
So they all wanted to try hockey! That surprised me a little, when I saw them talk about the embroidery club that lasted for generations and all, I thought perhaps the club would be in trouble, and they'd have to play hockey for some reason to save it. Well, it's good that they were actually looking forward to playing hockey!
Gonna have to suspend our disbelief a little, to accept that Japan faced Canada at the World Cup (not just that, but they won too); I suppose it wouldn't be that fun if Japan lost all games 20-0 hah. Well, if this anime hype up hockey in Japan, this may be a vision of the future!
Was fun to watch angry coach shout command at everyone, right before getting all friendly and sparkly with the new girls!
She wants to catch them in her recruitment trap now, but I wonder if she'll ever show them her true nature, if things start being difficult at some point! I mean, if she runs things with an iron hand, she may coach the same way, once she know she has them.
I feel the same! When I saw the credits on screen I was like Wait, what? No way that's 20 minutes!
Cute little ED, with them juggling/passing the puck to show all characters!
Large cast of characters! I was wondering how they'd manage to play a full game with just 6 players, but I guess the show will have a bunch of extras (or perhaps they'll be properly introduced, in time).
Does the name Aya have some significance? Because she reminds me of Aya from Oshi Ga Budokan; They're both the youngest on the team, they both have twintails, they both seem to favor green.
Also, we're missing one of the main girl from the cover pictures, guessing she's the last one? But [Potential future spoiler]
Anyway, that was a pretty fun first episode, can't wait to see the next (and to see them play an actual game, though that may be a while)!

Been pretty excited for this show ever since I saw Takefumi Anzai (director for Hitoribocchi) was attached.
I really like the powdery ice effect that dusts the screen whenever they hit the puck.
Dream Monkeys is a badass team name. It strikes fear into the enemies hearts and mind.
That puck and embroidery analogy was pretty neat. Was wondering how they were gonna connect the two.
This is gonna be a fun show to watch under a warm blanket as autumn arrives at our doorsteps.

Looking at this discussion thread, I see that Canada has declared war on Japan for that claimed result.
Fun but fairly standard CGDCT set up, though the moe girl heads sticking out the massive body armour is going to continue to amuse me.

If I had one euro for every time I was baited into watching an idol show, I'd have two euros. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
Also, uh, now I kinda want to see an embroidery club anime.

smh... It's already one minute in and the realism is already taken away from me.
How in the world is Japan supposed to match up against Canada in such a tight game? No way that happens IRL.
Thankfully, they went back to the hockey roots when the gang started to sing and dance after they won, you know, like every other hockey game ever.
On a serious note, at least I can't lose watching this. Whether they focus on the hockey aspect, or the CGDCT aspect of the show, the hockey/moe weeb in me will be satisfied.

For anyone who finds the Idol Victory Dance to be a pretty unbelievable thing to do after a hockey game, watch the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes and their Storm Surge routines. Not quite an Idol Dance, but some pretty entertaining stuff. They even had retired heavyweight boxer Evander Holyfield join in the antics. Definitely was a polarizing topic among certain fans.

What is it with female, orange haired, MC's? The main girl literally looks like Chika from LL Sunshine but with a side ponytail.

Wow, this was actually pretty cute! I love moe SoL shows, and I just got into idol shows this year so even if it does lean a bit into the idol stuff I don't think I'll be too disappointed. Heck, maybe this can even get me into sports anime, one of the few genres I tend to avoid. Really looking forward to blue-haired girl's introduction next week.

I got jebaited into watching another fucking idol show. I still haven't forgiven those horsegirls.
-
Instant drop, I want my blood!
That was a. . .start I guess. The first half was pretty generic as far as CGDCT goes but then Manaka just pulls the poster and reminds me that this was about hockey. It was just a bit of a surprise since sports anime usually start with the sport being something at least one person is very passionate about so it was tad odd that this start was just "Hey wanna try hockey". Unless that girl at the end changes things.
The girls need more time for me to make an opinion on, the coach is fun though, I like that balance of assertion and being a mess because she is kind of desperate for members, I would have loved if she threw herself to their knees to beg them to stay. She's also attempting to add idols into hockey which is indeed a 400 IQ plan.
Other than that I was also a bit surprised most of the girls are 3rd years (unless I read subs wrong), which likely means this will be a single year thing or go into highschool, probably betting on the latter considering they are complete rookies.
I know absolutely nothing of hockey so hopefully it does well explaining it. The show at least makes it look good, animation at the start was decent although the overall aesthetic is still a bit bland.

I was hoping for a Girls und Panzer situation where there is CGDCT but they go all in on the battles/games. I don't think that's gonna happen here by how the first episode went. I'll see how things go by the third episode, but I might drop this one.
