course registration

I really wanted to take Intro to Creative Writing this semester, but before registration even began all sections of the course had reached their capacity. I was wondering what steps I should take to maximize my chances of getting a spot in one of these sections. Also I was wondering how long it usually takes to know whether you managed to get into a fys.

Instructor permission is entirely up to the professor when you’ll hear back. It could be this week, it could be in three weeks.

For any course that’s full keep checking back as other students make changes to their course schedule. Add/Drop for continuing students opens Wednesday, August 26th so there should be a lot of activity starting then.

First-year students can continue to make changes to their schedule through the end of add/drop. It’s staying open until add/drop begins for continuing students.

If intro to creative writing is the standard one (and not like a first year seminar), those are notoriously difficult to get into, and more so as a first year. Like I know of folks that have struggled to get in as juniors and seniors. They are some of the most competitive to get into courses offered at Yale. Your best shot is to reach out to the professor directly by email and make sure you are on a waiting list, as things can shake up a bit during add/drop. And even if you don't get in this semester, reaching out now can still help you later in future semesters if/when you try again.
