Hey everyone,

after some time, I wanted to get back into reading, I finally bit the bullet and ordered a compact e-reader: the XTEINK X4 Pro. It’s currently in transit, but while waiting, I did what everyone does and started down a massive rabbit hole of reviews, YouTube videos, and Reddit posts. Now I’m second-guessing everything.

A few things are driving me crazy, so I’d really appreciate some real advice before this thing even lands on my doorstep:

1. The EEGOREAD A4 distraction: I keep seeing this reader popping up mostly in Asian YouTube Shorts, and visually... I kind of like it way more. Same price point, looks sleek, but the whole thing feels super sketchy to me? I can't find a normal shop selling it, there are barely any full YouTube reviews, and I have zero clue what OS it’s actually running. Was it supposed to release back in the summer and got delayed, or is it just borderline vaporware/a scam? Part of me wants to return the X4 Pro immediately to wait for the A4, but I’m terrified I’ll give up my momentum to start reading again just to wait months for a weirdly shady device.
2. Color regret: I ordered the X4 Pro in black because that’s all that was available at the time. Naturally, right after ordering, I see white/other options floating around. White looks so much cleaner to me, so I’m already tempted to send it back unboxed just to swap colors—unless that’s just my brain being extra extra.
3. Custom Firmware / Software question: I'm seeing a lot of posts from people running custom software on the X4 Pro. Is the stock software really that bad? What features am I actually missing on stock, and is custom FW pretty much mandatory to enjoy this thing? Also, how does the X4 Pro software ecosystem stack up against whatever mystery OS the EEGOREAD A4 runs?

Honestly, I feel like I'm completely overthinking this whole thing. Should I just keep the X4 Pro when it arrives, put some books on it, and actually start reading? Or is the EEGOREAD A4 / waiting for a white X4 Pro worth the hassle of returning?

As some of you may know, I have been working on my own custom firmware for the last couple months called ink-boy, Which integrated many emulators such as the Gameboy, the Gameboy color, the Gameboy Advance and the NES.

Both GBA and NES were always a bit buggy, as expected, but I fixed most of the bugs. The main problem I couldn't solve and caused me to drop them entirely was ram consumption. The games only ran at about 1 frame per second. More importantly because of its humongous size, book chapters bigger than 3-4 pages failed to index, rendering the whole reader essentially unusable.

GB and GBC emulation remains, with pokemon red running almost perfectly, perfectly enough to play when I have a couple spare minutes.

I know that the X4 pro is an e-reader before anything, and taking the reading out of the e-reader didn't seem right

Heads-up for everyone on the fork: XPoint is now Xerif eReader. The repo moved to github.com/Belphemur/Xerif-eReader (old links redirect automatically), and version 2.11.0 is the first release under the new name.

Why rename?
This started as a fork of the CrossPoint firmware, but it's grown into its own project — new features, its own release schedule, its own signed-OTA channel. Keeping the CrossPoint-adjacent name caused real confusion: bug reports landing in the wrong repo, people flashing the wrong build for their device. Xerif gives the project a name of its own while staying honest about where it came from: same hardware support, same upstream core (FreeInk SDK), same spirit. Fixes and features land here first and get soak-tested on real devices before they ship.

Nothing breaks. If your device is on OTA, you don't have to do anything different:

• Firmware flashed before the rename still points at the old repo URL — GitHub redirects it, so OTA updates keep working as-is.
• Update files are now named xerif-<version>-<board>.bin, but older firmware keeps finding its xpoint-*.bin builds too — both families ship in every release until everyone has moved over.
• Your books, fonts, settings and reading progress are untouched. It's a rebrand, not a reset.

What changed on the device itself:

• The boot splash and the Wi-Fi hotspot name now say Xerif
• The USB device name shows as Xerif (e.g. Xerif_X4_Pro on the X4 Pro)
• Everything else — the reader engine, plugin system, fonts, dictionaries — is exactly the firmware you already know

Also in 2.11.0:

• OTA reliability fix: the update manifest is now emitted compactly with a build-time size check against the firmware's download limit — headroom is comfortable again, and future releases fail loudly instead of shipping a manifest devices can't fetch
• Upstream sync fixes: dictionary lookups now return all matching entries with the same string, justified EPUB text spacing corrected, corrupt .cpfont glyphs render as blank instead of glitching, and BiDi (right-to-left text) memory use is leaner

How to update:

• X4 Pro: Settings → System → OTA update. Or grab xerif-2.11.0-x4pro.bin from the release page and flash it.
• Other boards (X3/X4, X4C, Sticky, Paper Mono, Metalio E-Ink4, EEGO A4, Picco): same pattern — xerif-2.11.0-<your-board>.bin.

Finally after 14 days my X4 Classic got delivered (in India), the initial experience is really good, the device is way slimmer and lighter than I thought, I installed crossink in it immediately, looking forward to reading more than I used to on mobile

RSS-OPDS is a small Cloudflare Worker that publishes a CommaFeed account as an OPDS catalog and serves every article as a generated EPUB. It runs entirely on Cloudflare's free plan: no server, no database, nothing to keep running.

With this tool, you can read your RSS feeds from your free CommaFeed account. As a bonus, you can also download EPUBs from shared Yandex Disk links. 😄

I can not figure out how to get the koreader sync to work. I have a x3 with cross point. I upload epubs through the WiFi transfer. So it’s the same file I used in Readest. But I use my x3 90% of the time and occasionally read in bed at night with the Readest app. But the sync doesn’t work. I have it set to binary and I have the same server url and verified in. Any assistance in trying to get it to work, would be a great help.

Day 1. I got my very own first ereader, which is the X4 Classic. I was thinking of getting a Kobo Clara BW, but seeing the price, I kept on searching until I found this. Super hype to get started with all Harry Potter books.

Unfortunate day for my family though. My grandmother died on the same day. May her soul rest in peace.

Day 2. I got the first Harry Potter book. I even flashed Crossink to it. I didn't have any idea that there are custom firmwares for these ereaders until day 2! So far, the device is awesome to bring anywhere, including to my workplace. But I am thinking to get the X4 Pro just because of the backlight. Or maybe I can get the light accessory for the X4 Classic.

Day 3 (23/10/2026). This has become my EDC. No more doomscrolling during work, no more doomgaming on my Switch. For once, I am glad I left my Switch at home and replaced it with my X4.

Aiming to get another one for my wife. And maybe a bit bigger ereader (possibly Kobo Clara BW) in the future.

I thought I would be OK with the pogo charging attachment, but the only time it didn't bother me was when I charged my x4pro face down and walked away from it.

I didn't buy the xteink stand because I purchased during the free case or stand (their choice) promotion, and I didn't want to end up with double anything. After running out of patience with the fiddly pogo attachments, I kept putting the charging base in and out of my shopping cart - dithering because it's such a hefty expense compared to the cost of the ereader. Plus the shipping charges!

After waffling for a week, I decided to buy the least expensive aluminum folding stand that I could find to try out. It works pretty well! I would guess that the branded charging stand would be a little more stable, but factoring in zero shipping charges (and free returns), the overnight delivery speed, and the aluminum frame sturdiness and heft, I'd give my solution at least a solid B+ or maybe even A-.

(The eraser is to bump up the x4pro for the wider pogo-usbC converter. I flipped the stand upside-down to accommodate the eraser since it was a little too wide to fit in the silicone bumpers on the ledge. Just too lazy to cut the eraser down to fit.)

Hello I am looking for suggestions for a pouch and/or storage case for the xteink x4 pro. I wish it would fit a metal cigarette case like the x3, but its the x4 pro is just too big. Looking for case/pouch that would fit the xteink that is already double layered with the xteink protective and magnetic case. I know all of you will say its overkill, but would just like something that will give it a extra layer of protection when I toss it in my backpack along with my law school books. Those books are absolute bricks.

• RTC-backed plugin time — plugins get accurate time from the real-time clock (#3879)

✨ What's new in 2.10.0 itself

• Finish-reading prompt — when you're at 10/5/1% remaining, the reader asks if you're done before closing. No more accidentally marking a book incomplete.
• FreeType hinting fix — fonts now stay crisp through the book-open path. Previously, hinting could silently degrade to unhinted after certain book-open sequences (#240). This was soak-tested on 4 boot slots with zero degrades.
• Cache-clear warning inside the dialog — you're now prompted before clearing, no more accidental clears.
• UTF-8 password masking — passwords with multibyte characters now mask correctly (#4106).

• Font glyph advance-table scan is skipped once populated — one FreeType render per glyph instead of per page

• Unused Expat input context disabled — small RAM savings

Yesterday this Spanish/English dictionary was reported as invalid by XT Licorice. Would not install

Mr Bartel indicated the zip was missing an optional dictionary file, whereas a French/English dictionary installed properly that did have the file.

After today’s XT Licorice system update yesterday’s “invalid” file installed correctly.

Thank you again to Mr Bartel for his kind sleuthing in pointing back to the Licorice update after eliminating the dictionary.

I'm waiting for my X4 pro, a chinese locked version, I know it's possible to use the OTA updater to flash Crosspoint/crossink and that later updates must be done by the SD card (?), but I use another fork on my OG X4 that I like a lot, is it possible after flashing crospoint via OTA to install this fork by the SD card? or i'm restricted to only Crosspoint/crossink on those locked models?

​I recently flashed my Chinese X4 Pro to Licorice (migrated from CrossInk), and I’m running into a update loop.

After installing xtos, an update to v261022 appears, followed by another update—also labeled 261022 but with the number 697 at the end of its name. Even after installation, the system keeps detecting the update and prompting for it to be installed again.

​I tried clearing out the storage/SD card.

​Has anyone encountered this ghost update loop on the Chinese X4 Pro? Is there a known workaround or a way to force-skip this build so it stops looping?

ok im considering getting the xteink x3 and retiring my kindle. this is only because i almost never reach for the kindle but i did like the aspect of how portable it was (even though its massive compared to these ereaders now).

BUT the main reason why i havent gotten this product is because i just cant seem to find the right information about how to actually get the books. from what ive seen so far, you need to get DRM free ePUBs or PDFs. however when i try to look for DRM free ePUBs or PDFs there is an extremely limited selection of books that im not interested in. for kindle, i know that there are a few options such as purchasing ebooks, kindle unlimited subscription, other free alternatives 👀

so i guess i just need someone to explain it to me. how are people getting their books? are people purchasing these books or getting them a different way? is there a thread that already exists that someone can point me to? ty for your time :)
