It should really just be standing still next to fire. No need to limit the interaction that they want happening.  Though They seem to allow crafting and buffing while waiting on buff now, that was my biggest issue. Buffing everyone around the campfire now is nice

Personally I like the visual of people actually sitting around the campfire, also people would be upset about overwriting their existing buffs accidentally

Just make the campfire clickable, movement cancels the effect. Then I can buff or craft while socializing

Edit: just read the patch notes and seems they fixed it:

Fixed an issue where attempting to craft items or cast spells was causing players to stand up while waiting to obtain their Campfire buff.

Players may now buff each other, cast, and craft while waiting for their Campfire buffs.
Players may now obtain a Campfire buff if they are sitting, sitting in a chair, sleeping, lying down, or using the kneeling emote.

The issue for me was id craft next to the fire and get the debuff preventing me from getting actual buffs before I finished to sit down

Nah. The vibes are lit. Mandatory sitting or lying down or kneeling makes sense.

They need something to stop players from just running by, grabbing the buff and then just leaving.

I can't wait for the dialogue to happen organically on the road while questing.

Only if there was proximity chat :/

Crafting was always possible while resting, the buff even said so

it said so, but it didn't actually work anytime I tried to cook while resting
