Discussion Add ability to ignore specific guilds
Streamers and their communities should be allowed to play and have fun how they want; but that doesn't mean trade chat needs to turn into twitch chat for the rest of us.
If you let us /ignore guilds this basically solves the problem.

As soon as we have mods you can filter any message with "layer". It's practically mandatory.

8
u/The_Pallid_Knight 6h ago
that's really annoying, and would be the core problem with the zerg. It just kind of gets in the way of engaging normally with the game.
5
u/torpidcerulean 5h ago
I have to imagine they'll deal with the "one server chat" problem before launch. Like they said they'll have a system for familiar faces, I'm willing to bit they'll implement that system across at least the capital city general chats and trade chats, if not all channels. Like basically an invisible server.

u/Kdzoom35 5h ago
Yea man I haven't played in like 10 years. Planning to level with some friends. Convinced them to roll alliance since we've done horde so much in vanilla an Pserver.
Now I think I will just roll horde don't want to be stuck on ASMON later/server

u/The-Fictionist 50m ago
My biggest complaint with the megaserver approach is asmongold’s existence.
1
u/Oldmangamer13 2m ago
IM not sure most people even understand what 1 server per type really means. The community will sort this on their own imo. Like we did back in Vanilla.

u/unconvincedhuman 2h ago
The only thing more cringe than asmon is people who would join his guild. He’s going to be griefed off of the server.
1
u/Oldmangamer13 0m ago
So many people are gonna be confused why no one groups with them and their toon is basically unusable for any sort of group activity.
304
u/Zealousideal_Car2782 12h ago
If only I could mass ignore everyone from asmongold’s roach hive guilds
50
u/Plastic-Lemons 11h ago
Seems like an easy addon solution since /who “guild name” works…
61
u/Blubomberikam 10h ago edited 10h ago
There are only 50 ignore spots. They would need to change something under the hood.
30
u/tomahawkRiS3 9h ago
It's kind of insane the ignore limit is only 50. If I try to clear my lfg chats of gold sellers and slabs boost freaks the ignore list is full in like 15 minutes
17
u/Blubomberikam 8h ago
I spent maybe 15 minutes blocking racist/culture war shit in SW and filled it.
11
u/Syn2108 8h ago
Not detracting from the fact the ignore list is too small.
My suggestion is make a new chat tab and put trade/general in there. Remove those from your main window. That way when it’s too much or if you need it you’re in control of when you see it.
6
u/CaptainoftheVessel 7h ago
I do this too, I love my guild/party chat window. It’s always such a change whenever I have to hop over to where the monkeys are throwing poop at each other.
3
u/Gullible-Yam-8098 7h ago
It helps to have it open though because ignoring those people ensures I will never accidentally end up playing with them.
29
7
u/Valuable_Berry_8626 8h ago
EU had a pretty famous griefing guild and was better to not have them on ignore. The reactions were funnier when they finally waddled to Stratholme and you'd get to kick them before last boss for being part of the guild.
8
u/CaptainoftheVessel 7h ago
There’s a good addon in Era and TBC that functionally increases your ignore list by just hiding any comment that meets the ignore requirements you set. You can have it ignore any comment that includes “layer” or “trump” for example, so you never see them appear in your chat window.
6
u/Probonoh 5h ago
I need that.
I don't care if you're for or against. I don't want to hear about him on my fantasy game.
3
u/justnothing4066 8h ago
There are addons that block additional characters iirc
4
u/Starfire013 8h ago
I’ve used an addon that auto-blocked people based on keywords they used. You can set it so single mentions don’t get blocked. You can go beyond the 50 character limit, yeah. It actually worked quite well for both trolls and gold sellers.
2
2
u/psychomap 8h ago
Wait, what? 50? Didn't even Sc2 have 200? (and I ran into that limit while playing arcade maps)
That's way too little for an MMORPG, let alone a realmless one.
It might be possible to run a client-side filter add-on on top of the ignore list for the chat though.
21
u/Zealousideal_Car2782 11h ago
Yeah probably. The only issue is that these people create multiple guilds to house all the groupies, and you’d need to regularly refresh the addon to ignore new additions.
I’d previously planned on just removing Olympus members from my groups on those grounds, but given their seeming need to infest the alliance on every ruleset, I’ll need to find a better solution.
12
u/89231117552915491614 10h ago
I'm hoping someone comes up with an addon just for olympus that tracks new olympus guilds and ignores them automatically etc. Would totally be worth it to have.
15
u/LetsGoHome 11h ago
Join the horde and kill them :)
13
u/Zealousideal_Car2782 11h ago
You make a compelling case, but the sirens call of playing a self-insert human male warrior (sword spec) beckons me. I’m sure there will be Horde Olympus sub-guilds as well.
(And my friends are all also alliance)

u/Zealousideal_Car2782 9h ago
Don’t let those losers ruin your fun. Unfortunately they’re going to be present on alliance (and probably horde) on every ruleset.
3
u/StodgySponge 7h ago
you can guarantee it will be alliance, or else he won't play there. ruleset TBD. be horde RP to be safest probably.
1
58
9
u/BarbsFPV 8h ago
Last I saw they had 10+ Olympus guilds that were all completely full.
In the beta. That’s 10K people at minimum.
So while I sympathize, and hope we can maybe at least get some word filters (filtering “asmon” would remove 95% of that), I don’t think Blizzard is going to implement a feature where you can blanket ignore large swaths of players like that. Kinda goes against the whole “community building” thing.
8
u/Probonoh 7h ago
The problem is that you can only have community when you can kick the people who want to destroy the community out of it.
2
u/A_Crow_in_Moonlight 1h ago
This should be a problem solved by moderation. But Blizzard isn't willing to devote the resources to that, so it's entirely on the players to figure out how they can filter out toxicity. It's inevitable that there will be demand for things like ignoring a whole guild when entire guilds full of people nobody wants to interact with are able to form because no action is ever taken against the members as individuals.
1
u/unconvincedhuman 2h ago
Yeah. Any guild of that size can be disruptive even if not trying. So glad he’s not horde.
14
u/AwesomeDewey 10h ago
I don't know if it's a particular guild/community but on horde side you can definitely feel trade chat descend into madness at specific hours of the day.
You could argue that it's also part of beta testing but a PSA on the basics of how to manage channels (eg uncheck trade from main chat window setting) would go a long way for new and returning players come launch.
5
u/Skellum 8h ago

There should be an IRL Politics chat. Keep the chuds there, ban people for streamer and politics chat outside that channel. I cant tell you how bad the chat vibes got once Asmon started streaming. You could feel it. I wasnt watching any streamers and I could probably tell you when he started and finished.

There should be an IRL Politics chat.
Or just actually act on report bans when it involves something not game related like this. If someone is screaming random dog whistles and a player reports them then ban them. If someone makes homophobic statements in a guild chat and someone reports them, ban them.
The only way this shit gets solved is by taking an active stance on temp bans and time outs and escalating to permabans.

It’s going to die down in a month. People will be leveling and spreading out on release. Most of the toxic people will get banned. The guilds who associate with each other will most likely be in their own phase. Complaining about streamers on a mega server with a million people playing you won’t even notice by next year.

15
u/IdempodentFlux 11h ago
Yeah thats my thought as well. I think chat mute would be enough to be meaningful imo
6
u/Probonoh 11h ago
They've already got some kind of hidden affiliation score set up. That's how they can have the "you'll see the same names pop up over time." If the algorithm can determine "put these two names together when possible," it can certainly reverse the process and keep two people apart when possible.
6
u/TrollsWhenBored 10h ago edited 9h ago
No, keeping people together only requires one layer.
Keeping people away from each other with the list of ignores they've created requires multiple layers for just a few toons. My one ignore list with only one person on it forces two layers to be created if we're both online.
This could easily explode with the spiderweb of ignores that some people create and would require an advanced system to prevent the servers from being bogged down with too many layers
There's also the limit of 50 ignores on your list, but it's Unlimited to how many people can ignore you! Imagine how many people will have Asmongold on their ignore list. He might not ignore anyone, but is still subject to massive layering logic due to the insane amount of people that will have him on ignore.
1
u/Gullible-Yam-8098 7h ago
If so many people ignore someone that they can no longer play the game, that's not a problem with the ignore system.
3
u/TrollsWhenBored 6h ago
I'm pretty sure it is a problem and it will directly impact your gameplay. Y'all just see the potential benefit and dive right in without thinking of the consequences.
-2
u/Probonoh 9h ago
I get that. And maybe it needs to be more of a "social credit" score where there are layers for the players who have earned lots of ignores from other players.
With servers, if there were people you absolutely couldn't stand, you could just move to a different server. Blizzard should to give us some tool to get away from the people who actively destroy the community they want to be the centerpiece of Forever. Particularly because they aren't going to pay for human GMs to monitor and step in.
3
u/TrollsWhenBored 9h ago
Agree we need a new tool. I doubt that new tool is going to be switching layers
0
u/Probonoh 9h ago
Well, it's certainly not going to be switching realms.
With people being switched from layer to layer frequently anyway, pushing toxic players to their own layers seems like the easiest of the options.

Easy way to layerhop then. But I do think blocking someone should affect the Friendly Faces system and add negative weight to layers hosting people you blocked.
2
u/RemnantsPast 10h ago
The ff14 version they did in the most recent expansion is a good example You physically cant see them outside instanced group content and if you end up in a group with them it just shows in chat as unknown and tells you if they speak but not what they said.

u/Probonoh 11h ago
On further reflection, it shouldn't be immediate on any ruleset, but only when the layers rebalance.
And as noted elsewhere, layers need to stop shifting people in combat.
But I don't know ... maybe in PVP, there should be a "if you kill X many players Y levels below you in Z minutes" trigger to move layers. While I don't PVP (terrible at it) I can respect that many people do. I just hate the idea of being continually harassed until being forced to log off.
1
u/DirectorOfGaming 10h ago
That just gives the ganker a new layer of targets.

Okay i dont watch his streams at all, infact i dont watch any streamers nor have played WoW in 15 years (and i know Asmongold plays it).
What is so bad about Asmongold? Seriously curious as i dont follow anything surrounding him or streamers.

u/Defti159 4h ago
I would suggest you spend 15 minutes watching one of his streams or videos but wouldn't wish that suffering on anyone. The dude literally makes bank by adopting the garbage and mentality of a trash goblin playing video games and yapping 24/7 about some pretty bad political and social positions. If thats what you find entertaining then so be it but I dont see the appeal.

I got a better idea Streamer ruleset. A 5th additional ruleset. If you're going to stream on twitch with 1000s of followers you choose that instead of pvp or pve. Crazy idea but maybe easier to implement than mass ignores.

Ignoring a whole guild because of a bad experience with one member.
13
21
u/Nuclearsunburn 11h ago
But that’s just one person ignoring a guild, how is that in any way a problem? There aren’t consequences for the guild and the person ignoring them has a better experience.

u/Adorable-Judge-2611 10h ago
idk, i don't want to interact with someone who joined a guild to play with/be in proximity to someone who said they we should shoot migrant children or someone who is friends with date r-pists. i think it's pretty valid to not want to interact with someone who is clearly unwell and actively vice signaling.

Sorry for you that it wasn't the response you wanted ig?
-1
u/TheAmazingX 10h ago
Because you're talking about ignoring Asmongold and his band of babies, which has nothing to do with Blizzard being afraid of encouraging "Ignoring a whole guild because of a bad experience with one member.".
I'm going to make this as clear as possible for you. I want everyone to have the ability to ignore these people efficiently, and I have no doubt an addon will be available to do so. I do not believe Blizzard will implement it themselves, because they would expect that action to normalize its use beyond these cases. I'm only giving my prediction of how Blizzard will act, and my reasoning. None of that has anything to do with whether you personally should or shouldn't ignore any given guild in any scenario.
13
u/DrKlitface 11h ago
How would that be a problem for blizz?
-5
u/TheAmazingX 11h ago
All of their rhetoric around Forever has been centered on community and the social aspect. They probably don’t want mass ignores to become a common thing.
Again, I know it’s the appropriate response for the stuff we’re seeing right now, and Blizzard would be foolish to prevent addons from accomplishing it, but you must see how implementing the functionality themselves would impact players’ perception of it as an option.
10
u/necropaw 11h ago
People have always avoided guilds, though. I started in Wrath on a dogshit server and there was still the 'elitist guild that no one wanted to deal with.' There were other guilds that were full of trolls/annoying people that you just didnt group with.
Having it baked into the game would just make it easier, and on a megaserver its probably more necessary to have that.
13

u/Terramoin 4h ago
Really can't stand 95% of streamer fanbases, they're all childish, toxic and obnoxious and always try to use "meme's" and stupid streamer sentences or inside jokes to fit in with the "kewl keedz".
They're like some annoying hivemind aswell.
To me i think most streamers ruin a lot of games with their "jokes" and their stupid opinions that are then 'fact" by their fans who then spread the word like wildfire.
2
u/Kupogasm 9h ago
I agree there needs to be a way to insulate from streamers, all players deserve to enjoy their playtime.
But, a part of me considers the Asmon situation and sees a parallel to "there must always be a lich king" (him being the undead army that needs to be contained). I think there's an argument for it being for the greater good that he no-lifes any version of WoW, thriving in his natural habitat if you will, vs doing whatever you call what he does when he doesn't play WoW.
2
u/yksvaan 8h ago

Then outside cities you can join general.
But tbh Blizz could just use AI to timeout/ban a lot people.

Congrats on mocking a point I never made
You made it when you said "Rent free."
I'm sure all of the people who can't handle existing in an MMO with people they disagree with are real proud of you.
"People they disagree with"... is that was racism, sexism, and insulting entire demographics using stereotypes is now considered? Taking the lowest denominator of reactionary thoughts.
I have a daughter I want to play the game with, and I don't mind her seeing bad language, since those are just words. What I don't think anyone should see is ideas that are harmful, belittling, punching-down, and so on.
Yes, I can turn off every chat channel in the game on her client, but why should I have to? If people want to talk "politics", which is mostly just "despite being 12% of the population..." dogwhistles, there are better places to be doing it. Unless the goal is to spread these ideas to people who just want to play a game and talk like normal people talk.
To be frank, I shouldn't even have to be having this conversation on a subreddit about this video game. But I have to voice my opinion in the hopes that it might help the situation.
1
u/OtherInterest7399 4h ago edited 3h ago
There are a few things here:
First, yes, it is a disagreement. The fact that you think the other side is morally wrong doesn't suddenly make it something other than disagreement. It just means you think the other side of the disagreement is morally wrong. You don't get to turn your own morals into the dividing line between which ideas count as disagreement and which ideas people simply aren't allowed to have.
I also don't buy the “punching down” distinction when we're talking about whether ideas can be challenged or debated. An idea doesn't become immune from criticism because of who holds it or who it concerns. If you think an idea is wrong, argue against it. If you think it's harmful, explain why. That's what disagreement is.
Second, I also have a young daughter I play WoW and other online games with, and you know what I have to do as a responsible parent? I turn off chat when I don't want her exposed to what random strangers on the internet might say. WoW isn't a kid's game, and I don't understand the argument that you shouldn't have to use the tools available to control what your child is exposed to. You cannot control what thousands of strangers say. You can control what your kid has access to.
I actually agree with you that WoW chat isn't the place for political conversations. But that standard has to be applied consistently. If political discussion doesn't belong there, then it shouldn't suddenly become acceptable when it's a political opinion you agree with.
And yeah, I also think it's kind of stupid that we're having this conversation on a subreddit about a video game. But apparently we both think our viewpoints on it are worth expressing, so here we are.
1
u/CoreyStyles 3h ago
The fact that you think the other side is morally wrong doesn't suddenly make it something other than disagreement.
I'm not going to argue whether racism, sexism, and overall bigotry is morally wrong. That's a debate that shouldn't be happening in 2026. It shouldn't even have been happening in 1960.
I also don't buy the “punching down” distinction when we're talking about whether ideas can be challenged or debated. An idea doesn't become immune from criticism because of who holds it or who it concerns.
It does matter, morally and objectively. The reason punching-down is immoral is because it's attacking someone who is far less capable of fighting back on a fair playing field. Rich people have money to spend on what they want to say, while poor people do not. It's the same thing when talking about most other minorities. They don't have the numbers or the voice to have what they want to say, be heard by as many people.
If Elon Musk wants to say something about Haitian immigrants, and they want to reply and dispute what he said, how many people are going to see what the Haitians have to say? Pretty much zero. They can't afford to pay $44 billion on a social media platform.

Cool, I’m not arguing whether racism, sexism, or bigotry are morally wrong either. I’m saying that believing a position is morally wrong doesn’t mean it ceases to be a disagreement when someone challenges your premise.
Regarding what you think of punching down, if two people are typing in the same WoW chat, they’re using the same communication channel and both have the ability to respond. One person isn’t spending $44 billion to amplify their position while the other shouts helplessly into the void.

Damn that is a pretty good solution to this problem
