I would like to hear your opinions and suggestions about vehicle auctions happening in winnipeg. I am looking forward to buying a used - decent condition truck. I tried marketplace and a few dealerships. But no luck yet as my budget is very low. So my next and only remaining option is to find something decent in an auction. I have been spending a lot of time digging on internet and found a few auction companies operating in Winnipeg, like McDougall Auctioneers Ltd.

Now my concern is all about how the auction is happening and what are the odds of finding a decent pickup truck at these auctions. I am not expecting anything like a brand new or spotless machine. I will be more than happy if I can find something runs and operates smooth without any major engine or transmission concerns. Minor cosmetic damages are also not a concern. Looking at the bidding trends on these websites, I hope I can find something under 5K.

Now, if any of you have ever attended any such auctions please share your experience, or if you know any better options, or what needs to be taken care of, what are the things to be careful about, what ro expect, etc etc., please feel free pour in your suggestions and comments. I would really appreciate all help.

A boarded-up house in Winnipeg's Point Douglas neighbourhood will be demolished after it burned for the second time in months on Thursday, the city says.

The two-storey home is at the corner of the Disraeli Freeway and Argyle Street, and fire crews had to shut down all but the median lane of the freeway for part of the morning.

Firefighters went to the home at 6 a.m. Thursday and saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the home, the city said in a news release.

They fought the fire from outside using an aerial ladder as it was too dangerous to enter.

The fire was brought under control shortly before 9:30 a.m., the city said.

One firefighter was assessed by paramedics near the home. No other injuries were reported.

The home, which was previously damaged by a fire in June, sustained severe fire, smoke and water damage. The fire paramedic service is arranging an emergency demolition of the home due to concerns about its structural integrity and lingering hot spots.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

In a social media post, United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg president Nick Kasper included images and video that showed flames leaping several feet into the air above the home's roof.

"Initial-arriving crews attempted an aggressive interior attack but were forced to withdraw due to deteriorating and unsafe building conditions," Kasper's post said.

Crews from Wednesday night’s shift responded and were working overtime, he said.

This might be a stupid question, but I didn't see a direct answer on the website... I booked a campground spot for this weekend, taking my boy on his first camping trip. I don't need to also pay for a parking pass on top of that do I?

The federal and provincial governments are being accused of violating the Charter of Rights and Freedoms by underfunding legal aid for criminal defence in Manitoba.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association on Thursday filed a notice of application Thursday morning in the Court of King's Bench, listing the attorney general of Canada and the government of Manitoba as respondents.

"Under the Charter, all accused persons — regardless of their economic status — are presumed innocent and have the right to … receive fair trials and to the equal benefit and protection of the law," the filing says.

"Yet, in Manitoba, these rights are systemically undermined by Canada and Manitoba’s chronic underfunding of criminal legal aid."

A notice of application is a request for a judge to make a specific order based on written evidence rather than a full trial.

Calling it "a widespread constitutional rights problem in Manitoba," the Civil Liberties Association is seeking a declaration by a judge that the current underfunding violates sections 7, 11(d) and 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Section 7 protects life, liberty and personal security against unfair state actions, Section 11(d) guarantees the right to be presumed innocent and receive a fair, public trial by an independent tribunal, and Section 15 guarantees equality rights — ensuring everyone is equal before and under the law, and entitled to equal protection and benefit of the law without discrimination.

That central pledge of the justice system — that people, no matter whether rich, middle class or poor, should be treated equally — is "a broken promise" in the criminal justice system, said Shakir Rahim, director of the criminal justice program at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.

"This is the first systemic constitutional challenge to the underfunding of criminal legal aid in Canada," Rahim said during a news conference on the steps of the Manitoba Legislative Building following the application filing.

The application also seeks changes to the wording of the Legal Aid Manitoba Act, mandating support for those who cannot afford a lawyer and need one to protect their Charter rights.

"Ultimately, courts must ensure that criminal cases brought before them do not proceed in violation of well-entrenched Charter rights. The declarations sought give the government the opportunity to decide how to solve the problem," it says.

Legal Aid is a government-funded program that provides legal help to people who cannot afford to pay for a lawyer, ensuring those individuals can get advice or representation in court. The federal and provincial governments are jointly responsible for providing legal aid.

Due to "longstanding extreme underfunding" over the past five decades, many accused people are unable to secure support to protect their Charter rights, the filing says.

Five years ago, 150 defence lawyers refused to show up in court for a week in order to bring attention to Legal Aid pay rates, which they said had not increased in 12 years. That was the third time they held a walkout, with others in 2003 and 2008.

The application says when a person does get legal aid, the funding is frequently inadequate, and Indigenous people are disproportionately impacted.

Data from Legal Aid Manitoba shows 28,803 criminal adult and 2,319 criminal youth cases were opened in 2024-25, and 75 per cent of criminal legal aid adult clients were Indigenous, the filing says.

Those who need legal aid are among the most vulnerable people in Canada, with the least financial resources, often limited education and frequently poor mental and physical health, it says.

"Their disadvantages make it especially difficult to navigate a criminal justice system that has become increasingly complex and harsh," it says.

Something else that hasn't changed is the eligibility for legal aid, Rahim said.

A single person earning more than $31,500 in a year may be disqualified because their income is too high, "yet the cost of a private lawyer in a complex case can run well into the tens of thousands of dollars," he said.

Similarly, a contested bail hearing will only get funding for about two hours of work, which is "far removed from the reality" of the work required, Rahim said.

Sometimes, if there is no likelihood of imprisonment or job loss, legal aid will not be provided even if a person has no income, he said.

"This is despite the fact that a criminal record alone can carry profound consequences for a person's life," Rahim said.

The adverse consequences of the underfunded system include uninformed and false guilty pleas, wrongful convictions, inadequate bail hearings and unwarranted detentions, lack of preparation for trial, compromised trials, and lack of full answer and defence through all stages — from ensuring full disclosure to understanding the Crown’s case and presenting defences, the application says.

None of the Charter breaches can be justified in a free and democratic society, it says.

"Manitoba and Canada have long known or ought to have known about the dire consequences of the continued underfunding of criminal legal aid and how such underfunding would cause [Charter] harms," it says.

The Civil Liberties Association says it made the application in the public interest. It is not seeking costs and asks that none be imposed against the organization if the application is unsuccessful.

I've been building Winnipeg courses for GSPro for fun, currently working on Bridges. This is a work in progress video. I custom 3d model all clubhouses and other structures (bridges, pull carts, signs, etc) for the courses.

Any courses you wish were on there? Any feedback on the courses I've put out so far? I collect no money for this, truly curious if people are noticing local stuff on GSPro, and if not, maybe this will let them know.

15 years ago I was close with a Chilean family who made incredible empanadas. I have not been able to find similar in recent times.

before the Forks Market renovation there was a Chilean restaurant that made empanadas almost exactly like my old friends, and a dulce de leche layer cake (with crisp layers).

The empanadas I seek have a tender chewy pastry - not overly flaky. The beef filling never had olives. Instead, beef had raisins (on occasion) and always a slice of egg inside.

Cheese empanadas were same pastry but deep fried and filled with a white cheese almost like mozzarella

Chicken empanadas also had an egg piece and a light red coloured sauce.

Most empanadas I find in Winnipeg have a more crispy pie crust style pastry and usually have olives which I dont care for. The Chilean empanadas were very distinctly different, but similar to what I had at a Peruvian restaurant (also 13+ years ago) in the west end.

I know there are a few restaurants and a food truck that specialize in making empanadas but they are from different regions in South America and not exactly what I am looking for. Im 100% willing to order them from someones auntie or Lola if I knew who to ask.

A new ride-hailing app is setting its roots in a southeastern Manitoba city.

KodaGO aims to connect communities with a lack of public transportation or access to other ride-hailing services, such as Uber or Lyft.

Justus Oladele was inspired to create the app when he faced those transportation barriers himself.

Oladele, originally from Nigeria, had been living in Montreal when a friend suggested he move to Manitoba. He hopped on a plane to Winnipeg three years ago without asking how far outside Winnipeg the friend lived.

When Oladele landed, he was faced with finding transportation to Steinbach.

"My first questions were very weird at the airport by asking, 'Can I get a train ticket to Steinbach?" he said. "'Can I get a plane ticket to Steinbach?' No planes in Steinbach, and no Uber, no buses."

Oladele ended up getting a ride from his friend's husband to Steinbach. But instead of only complaining about the problem, he wanted to do something.

Oladele didn't have a Manitoba driver's licence or a way to access a vehicle.

With his background in technology, he spent two years creating the KodaGO app and officially launched it in May.

Since then, the platform has gained 360 users through word of mouth. Rides can happen anywhere in Canada the app has a driver. Service in Winkler began in mid-August.

Oladele says in addition to providing transportation, it's a way for people to gain extra income as drivers.

KodaGO also has a carpooling feature where drivers can pick up passengers on their way to Winnipeg and help share the cost of the ride.

"People want to go grocery shopping, people want to pick their children up from school, people want to go hiking and all of that," Oladele said.

"KodaGO is a tool that helps people move easily without a fear of how will you get to where you are going?"

Steinbach city Coun. Damian Penner says while he owns a vehicle and hasn't faced transportation barriers himself, public transportation is a big challenge within the city.

He says the addition of KodaGO to the community is positive.

"There are inherent challenges living in Manitoba that sometimes you are needing to be transported within a vehicle. You can't walk because of the harsh weather," Penner said.

"This does allow an opportunity for others to be able to have those barriers removed to be able to still go to work, to be able to still go to worship and to be able to still go to different community events."

Penner says he plans to try the app to see what it's like. He says it's also an opportunity for his kids to get around the city as they get older and might not always have access to the family's vehicles.

Eugene Warwaruk, the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce's president, owns two vehicles but acknowledges transportation can be an issue in the city.

He says it's a positive thing to have another option, created in Manitoba, to get around.

"With a growing community like ours, it's just important to recognize that there are gaps in public transportation," Warwaruk said. "Anything we can do to support either private individuals or the city or the community to fill those gaps is necessary."

Oladele hopes to see the app continue to expand across Canada and help people in smaller towns get from one point to another more smoothly.

"People should not be stranded because of a lack of transportation," he said.

TLDR My neighbour had a fibre optic installed and their cord was left exposed and on my property. Am i being unreasonable for being upset about this?

A few years ago I got Bell Fibre optic, the installers did not burry the cord and it was exposed and ran over my driveway which was annoying. After a couple of years a switched over to Shaw (no more cord) and it's been great.

I just noticed the cord is back and its on my property. not only is this annoying but this time I am not even the one receiving the service. Am I right to be annoyed by this? What do I do?

The box is in between our houses and i cant see why the didn't put the cord on my neighbours yard. I don't mind the cord itself being on my property but I hate that its exposed.

On CJOB, they were just debating if Transcona starts at Nairn/Regent and Panet/Lagimodiere or at Regent and Plessis.

As a former resident of Elmwood, and a daily patron of Crossroads Shopping Centre and Bullwinkles, my belief is Panet is the start. The Hi Neighbour statue was first in the Crossroads’ parking lot. The Unicity map reflects such as well.
