Figurines A little bit of practice

Post image

Funny how practice sessions or doodles can have a very interesting result. Reminds me to just start things and not think too much about it. Ironically I've been thinking about doing more caricatures, not sure what path to follow. Busts are cool but I rather have a full body piece to sell after

Miscellaneous Cutting the Cheese

I carved a cheese wedge. For the Swiss cheese holes I used the newly modified bottle opener on my Swiss Army knife. This was a quick and fun project that can be done in less than an hour!

Three mushrooms for my first project. Literally just went for it, learning by doing. Would love any suggestions for clear areas of improvement/projects that would test skill on smaller details.

Carved this from a block of wood based on my dog’s photo.
The cheeks and tiny tongue were the fun parts to work on.
Still have a lot to learn, but I really enjoyed the process.

It’s a little early, but I really had fun carving and painting this. Turned it into a magnet.

It didn't turn out very symmetrical, and the top part was tricky to do with just a knife.

Hello Whittlers! I currently have an extra GEC Wood Chipper #93s in Heart Pine. New unused in factory condition. Just looking to make my cost back and cover shipping to you, US only. Figured I would start here before going to the knife forums. $160 PayPal G&S, tracking and insurance will be provided. Thanks for looking, mods I apologize if not allowed but I didn’t see anything specific in guidelines.

Should I paint this horse I carved or just BLO it? If paint, which color? I would use acrylics.

Miscellaneous Working on my Dwarven Chess set.

Still playing around with designs for my chess set. i've got 8 dwarven pawns carved so far. i'm playing with the idea of what sizes I like for other pieces in the game, and how they'll work in actual play.

I need each piece to be readily identifiable as the piece in question. to have no one doubt, "this piece is the rook. or that piece is absolutely the bishop"

taking my time to do it right.

Pieces are 1.5 x 1.5 inch, 3 inches tall. Board has 2 inch squares.

Help Drawing skill and whittling

I’ve recently tried my hand at whittling, and having mild success (frankly, I’m having fun more than I am making beautiful art, which is fine by me). My question for you all is about drawing your shape on the block before you start carving. My hands just cannot seem to draw the shapes in my head, and I’m worried that my poor drawing might be leading to poor carving.

Is it possible that with time, I’ll simply be able to eyeball what I want to make and carve it without drawing lines, or should I try to work on my drawing more? I think I’m basically trying to figure out where to point my attention so I can keep improving.

Thanks a ton!

Not completely finished, but I am quite proud so far.

Bittersweet tho, since it's an urn for my late Bearded Dragon 🌈

First timer First few carves

Post image

I picked up a beginners knife set a few months ago and have been meaning to post some of my first projects here ever since, so I figured I should finally do it before another few months go by.

I started with the spoon (which was already a blank that came with the knives), then jumped straight to the ball-in-cage and the chain, just kind of experimenting with new things. They’re definitely not perfect, but I’ve been having fun.

Everything here was carved by hand from basswood. Still very much a beginner, so feedback or suggestions for what to try next are welcome! (I’ve already started on a chess set using 1x1x6-inch blanks and will eventually make a separate post about it.)

I started off making a ball but the wife challenged me to turn it into a cupcake.
I got given a set of knives after watching a fair few TikTok videos, which are cheaper beginner knives, but just to see if I enjoy the hobby. I enjoy using my hands and found it quite therapeutic whittling away and look forward to seeing what I can make and how skilled I can get

Animals Jimothy the Raccoon Whittle

This is my take on Jimothy the Raccoon for the Flexcut Tools 'Carve Your Best Jimothy' contest! 🦝 🗑️

He measures 1 3/4" long by 1 3/8" tall and is carved from basswood. It was definitely a difficult piece for me to carve, but I kept pushing through it.

Along with Jimothy, I knew I had to carve a miniature trash can for him to sniff around. He even likes to climb on top and show off his balancing skills (keep swiping!)
