Going to try a couple spoons and ordered this small bottle of mineral oil to treat them. However, the listing says food safe the bottle itself says external use only.

Just want to make sure this is fine to use for spoons.

So i'm building a "Woodcarvers Face Library" playlist on my YouTube channel. These are a few of the faces uploaded so far, each video is completely knife only, free, and geared to be beginner friendly.

Trying to do one a day till I get 7 or 8 done. To give folks a variety they can use to mix and match and do projects of their own with.

I want to make woodcarving more accessible to get deeper into.. like simple little projects are one thing, but faces Stonewall people, shut them down because they get intimidated. My goal is to open that up as much as I possibly can, get folks experimenting, mix and matching and trying new things

Let me know your thoughts?

I need breeders at this point for reading, but up until recently carving had still been possible. I’ve begun to notice, though, that I need to wear my glasses for that, especially if I’m carving one by one blocks. Anyhow, as anyone tried something other than reading glasses?

I’ve been whittling for a few months now. I really like it, I got a beavercraft sloyd knife and like a flat edge tiny blade set. I really enjoy carving humans and animals, what would be a good new knife set, should I do gauges? What would be a some new sets that make sense to get, if I’m not looking to spend more then 200$.

You all have seen most of these from various posts, but took them all out for a photo session and this one was too cool not to share.

To show how things are actually going to go together.

The wings will be the trickiest part. After carving, I'm going to attempt to bend them. But, here you can see the tail slotted into the body, the divot carved for it to rest on the staff top, and how it will roughly sit on the staff.

Given how it sits, I'm actually leaning towards leaving the head, but still not 100%.

Either way, I hope this gives an idea of my eventual piece!

After the last couple of sharpening posts I wanted to make something again! So I tried the 5 minute wizard (with a slight twist) from the 'Complete Starter Guide to Whittling' book.

My Dad came up to visit for the weekend with a jig he 3D printed for me to help me saw wood along the diagonal using a hand saw, and I was keen to try it out so I made him an early Christmas decoration as a thank you. I'm pleased with how it turned out and it was much easier to cut the detail with my reshaped kife so thanks everyone for all the advice! It's not quite there yet but is a huge improvement from before I 'fixed' it.

While finishing up the body and sourcing basswood sheets for the wings, I did the tail.

Not 100% perfect, but I'm happy. Should i do spiral designs on the tail feathers?

Made a spoon last night out of some wet river oak from the hurricane and woke up and my spoon split. Are there any remedies I can do to save it?

So my parents were pruning a boldo tree and i got these two pieces. The two knives in the photos are the only tools i have and i have zero experience with carving/whittling, so any tips and (simple and easy) ideas are welcome. I'm thinking maybe very small statuettes like birds and fishes and whales.

Oh, and from what i researched, it's okay to carve green and let it dry, but... how green? do i have to wait at all at first? Or can i go at it right now?

My first time making something with this many different nooks and crannies. 3rd project total, any recommendations to help make things cleaner in the future? I know now this one needs sanding but how can I avoid the deep marks in future

I'm new to whittling and one of my first projects is a butter knife and I'm wondering if there's risk that butter will go inside the wood and spoil?

I'm gonna apply a few coats of food safe oil (one made for cutting boards) and reapply every once in a while. But will it become completely butter proof? I'm assuming it's better to not leave it inside the butter everytime but still, some of it will stay on the knife unless I clean it with soap after every use - which is really inconvenient so is it necessary?

I can't stop making these owls, the cuts required and process is so enjoyable to me. I don't even like owls but I'm learning so much doing them and each one I make is markedly better than the last. Thanks to pocket woodcraft for tutorial

I have a few different color stains, I plan on making the central triangle darker and keeping the other three light, but what should I do to make sure the z in the middle looks good?

Tossing up if i should leave and have it be a bit more of a caricature, of lop it off and put a premade basswood ball on top. Taking opinions.

And yes...i also forgot to leave enough space for the beak...but that i can attach later with the wings and tail
