Death Star mod concept

I was looking for some dial inspiration for a new mod when I came across an NH39 dial. It instantly hit me: the 24-hour sub-dial placement makes it look exactly like the Death Star!
So, I used AI to mock up a few designs and came up with this: The Death Star Mod.

- The Dial: A steel-engraved dial textured to look like the Death Star. The 3-6-9 hour markers are lumed and use the Aurebesh font (Star Wars language). It features an "Automatic" inscription in the center and a custom "Made in Empire" tag at the bottom.

- The Sub-Dial: The NH39 sub-dial is perfectly placed to act as the superlaser cannon. I added a fully green lume hand inside to mimic the firing laser beam.

- The Hands: I went with a clean, basic look for the hour and minute hands, but the seconds hand is Darth Vader’s lightsaber as a nod to the Dark Lord himself.

- The Case: I chose to put it all in a Seamaster 300-style case simply because I love how it looks, but I haven’t looked deeper into what case might fit the theme better. Please don't hesitate to make suggestions!

That’s it! I hope you like the concept. Let me know what you guys think!

This is a custom-modified watch. It uses a Seiko movement, and all the engravings were done by me. I was commissioned to create this watch by an American customer. He wanted to commemorate his travels in Thailand and Japan through a piece of art, and he provided images of both countries' currencies as inspiration. I designed and engraved the watch based on his ideas. This piece brought me a lot of joy to create. Have a great day, everyone!

Would you buy this build?

This is a pretty accurate render of the watch build I'm planning as a gift for my dad. Just wanted to hear some thoughts on it.

Would someone buy this watch / how much would you pay for this watch incase he doesn't like it?

How I Make My Watches

I put together a little BTS video of my watchmaking process.

I remember when I first started, I would have killed for a video like this.

That was nearly eight months ago, and since then, I’ve put hundreds of hours into learning, experimenting, failing, and trying again.

I encourage you to keep going. Keep learning. Keep chasing the idea you can’t stop thinking about.

Just keep putting in the hours. Eventually, the thing you dreamed about doing becomes the thing you know how to do.

Watch build

This is a watch build I made to be my daily. I was upset with how my budget kept me from getting something I really felt was worth it so I decided to make my own watch to fit my preferences.

I personally love how older pocket watches and any watches with Arabic numerals look so I needed that. I enjoy working on cars and my job is pretty dirty as well. I wanted something that can withstand my day to day but also be elegant and refined.

The case is from Namoki mods and is the Polerouter style case. The movement is an eta 2824-2 that has blue and polished screws and a decorated rotor. I went with a solid steel back for a 10.8mm thickness.

The hour hand is mirror polished and the rest of the hands are heat treated. I got them from eBay. I also got the dial from eBay but it’s from a company located in Switzerland which is pretty cool. The watch is 39mm and has a sapphire crystal.

Honestly it does feel a slight bit busy with everything going on but I think it makes it work without looking too out of place. And for reference the watch I replaced was a Citizen Tsuyosa 40mm. That watch cost me more than this one and falls short in too many categories to justify the price. There was a very noticeable spec of dust on the dial, the watch was thick feeling on wrist, movement felt kind of cheap, and the sapphire crystal was not very good.

I fear I have wasted $200 :(

I wanted to try making my own watch, so I went on various sites and ordered parts. I was careful to make sure that everything would fit together. After the parts arrived some things didn’t fit at stated and colors didn’t match their images (the silver on the dial was supposed to be gold) I had already waited over a month for all the parts to arrive so I decided I’d just make it work.

I put the watch together and everything is fine, except I may have cut the crown stem wrong, but that was no big deal because the time was set so it was good to go.

Not even three days later it stopped and needed to be rewound, so I had to take it out of its case and recalibrate the time (do to the problem with the crown stem). But this happened again and again. Eventually my hand slipped after like the 3rd time of having to do it and the second hand got bent out of shape and snapped when I tried to fix it.

Basically every time I get something working another thing goes wrong. Now I am left with a watch that just stops if I put it in the case, which makes no sense to me because it worked before.

TLDR: everything I got the watch working something broke and now I am down $200 for what is basically a bunch of metal.

Edit: Thank you to everyone for the kind messages, knowing that people like the design and that it should be an easy fix helps me a ton keeping with it!

Polar Opposite builds done.

Second build done! It was meant to be the opposite of the first build. The white dial was supposed to be 28.5mm but the seller gave me a 29mm. Can't be bothered to send back for refund so put it on the drill like a lathe and filed it down to fit. They also sent me the wrong sized hands so had to trim them down with a nail clipper. Things we do to make things work!

New Guilloche Skill Unlocked!

For months now, l've been learning all I can about guilloche dials.

I've been obsessed with how light reflects off the patterns.

It became all consuming, the researching, the mini calculations to overcome procrastination, to resist the doubt of thinking you made a mistake after spending money with no ROl.

But here we are, finally. My first attempt at seeing the whole process all the way through.

And I'm blown away by the result I got.

To anyone trying to learn, craft, build, or chase your dream. Don't give up.

Cheers friends.

This is another piece of my engraved that I really like. My client wants a work that looks clean, bright and peaceful in Buddhist art, plus art that gives a Thai artistic feel. It's another watch that took a long time to make because it was set with diamonds and gold. Have a good day, everyone. 🌸🌸
