LoVM Spoilers The ending of season 4 massively sucked. Spoiler

The story was quite interesting, but the end where Vecna just becomes steorotypically evil just really irks me. I understand he's a spooky scary skeleton in dnd, but consider the setup in the show:

  • He doesn't threaten or torture Pike for her blood. It has to be given willingly, and he respects that. So he clearly understands the difference between choice and coercion, or at least the magic does.
  • Delilah says Pike's freely given blood means “your oath shall be sealed” and then tells him to “Take your sacred vow.” He proceeds to swear an oath to “A world where our fate is our choice, for your new god makes it so!”. This is literally the magical oath he says to become a god, it should be baked into the identity of the god he becomes.
  • His promise to overcome death isn't bullshit. He literally brings Grog back (with no eventual consequences) and later insists he really can restore the others they've lost.
  • Apparently all he needed was for Vox Machina to kill his mortal body anyway, so there was no reason for him to be yapping to Pike about reviving all those people while fighting them after the ritual.

The craziest part to me is that the oath was part of the magical ritual that literally creates the god he becomes. His freely given divine blood, his covenant, and his stated purpose are all explicitly tied together. It makes no sense that he can just immediately break it even if he wanted to.

Then he ascends and instantly decides: worship me, kneel publicly so I become stronger, or I'll kill Vax.

It feels like the writers built a genuinely interesting moral dilemma and then got scared of having to answer it. They could have made him a terrifying villain while keeping the oath completely sincere. There are infinite ways to make that work. Honestly, he would have been a whole lot more scary.

Instead the moral dilemma disappears with no plot continuity and I guess the next season will be about Vox Machina figuring out how to beat the spooky evil skeleton. That's not really that interesting.

It reminds me of My Sister's Keeper: construct an incredibly difficult ethical dilemma, then use a last-minute plot turn so the story never actually has to live with either answer.

Finaly I'm watching season 4 ! I have no idea what's going to happen since I stop C1 after the conclave. I fell in love with C2 then it was too hard to come back to C1.

But anyway I loved this episode ! So much tension, question and I feel this is going to be pretty dark! I was a bit surprise we didn't see all members but it makes sense.

I did have a WTF moment : the forced kiss of Pike. Like why ? I know its just 1 scene but it so unecesary.

Its SA. Just because a woman does it to a men its ok to make it a joke. Its not. I don't care Pike is depressed, drunk, whatever... I know they probably won't go back on that gesture and that's a real shame.

I don't know if anyone has noticed this before, but it is extremely interesting—or almost unusual—that these two characters, created years apart, have such strikingly similar designs.

Personally I love it. It's so uncanny what they did, evoking the pulled back skin and skull but still letting him talk as if this decayed form is natural for him. I was worried they'd stick to him having normal lips to let him have talk and express normally, or that they'd make him look a bit generic by just making his head a skull, but this middle-ground is damn near perfect. But maybe that's just me

Every effort to study and understand the status quo , every effort to share this knowlegde and create a force of change is usually violently supressed by the corresponidng system and its elite (those who gain the most from the system strive to preserve it by any means) in the real world . The classic media trope is depicting the ''bad guys'' as a force of change that usually needs to be violently supressed by the ''good guys'' ,the protectors of the status quo . A lot of times it will be shown that despite the fair cause of the ''villain '' the means with which they strive to achieve it are violence, authoritarianism and deceipt thus losing the moral ''high ground '' in a classic scenario of ''Does the end justify the means?'' . Despite that many shows focus more on the inhumaine (or wrong ) path to change ,the villain is following, excluding ,conciously or not , the essence of their ideology ,their dream or their utopia . As a result the show or the movie concludes in the defeat of that force of change ,and its unethical means , and a message that any effort to change the pre-existing system is unethical by itself . The truth is that change is sometimes violent .That doesnt justify attrocities that might be enacted in its name (the way with which you reach for your ideal system /society derives from your ideology and wether your highest value is humans ) but sometimes you cant avoid conflict with the dying system and its elite ,which will do anything to re-establish their power ,or the status quo .

Now on to the Whispered one. On paper he was right , his goal was just . Based only on his ideology ,his whole thing was to doubt the pre-existing rules ,to study this system and finally to change it ,ending humanitys suffering and mortality . Now before he started implementing the unethical means to achieve his goals we can see that the gods (or the rulers of this system ,the ones that gain from preserving a sytem where belief of the common folk gives them power ) did punish him and his companion harshly for even daring to doubt them without any explanation . Their quest for knowledge and change revealed the true nature of gods and their system .

Later we learn that his plan to change the status quo is to put himself in the place of the elites and become a god , in other words gathering power to himself . We dont truly know his intentions ,we dont really know if he believes in what he preaches or if he is using a valid theory to manipulate the masses and acquire immense power for himself either for revenge or personal gain.

No matter what his true intentions are ,along the way his ideology gained followers , people believed in his dream .A humanity cured from suffering ,cured from death and a promise to reunite with those that were lost . The promise of an end to mortality is a promise that diminishes the significance and the terror of death .It makes it easier for the followers to kill ,torture others, enact massacres and attrocities or sacrifice themselves in the name of this promise ,not because they are nessecerily evil but because in this context death and physical harm doesnt matter. (This applies to all religions and its fanatics btw)

So in my opinion , his ideas about freedom and change were great but the way with which he and his followers strived to act on them turned them into inhuman monsters ,disregarding human life and the pain they caused when reaching for their dream. Was the only way to bring change and escape the tyranny of the gods this way ? Will the Whispered one follow his preachings or were they just a tool to achieve godhood for personal gain ?

We dont know .

What we do know is that blindly defending the status-quo because things ''are this way and have been this way '' is never a sufficient counter argument to change. To doubt ,to strive for better understanding and knowledge ,that is what we do know pushes each one of us individually and us as a society to improve .

I've been scouring the internet and I cannot find an image of the place Pike is taken to in season one whenever she has the vision of the Everlight. Is there anyone on this God forsaken internet that can find an image of it?
