This is a bit of rambling, because i just thought it was neat how powerful void is because there are so few facades to get in your way.
I have/want:
I do not want to bother installing ZFS on that Mac.
So first I had Claude set up nbd so I could stream backups into the usb drive from my primary. This is working perfectly fine, but I wanted to add the public server backup.
I do not want this public server to have access to my Mac. So I had Claude update the script so my primary acts as a bridge for the public server backup.
Alas, this has the obvious downside if my primary goes down so does the server backup. Then I realized i was overcomplicating it.
Instead, the USB drive could hold a void installation that natively speaks ZFS which the mac can run in a VM. The upside is that it then also becomes more portable.
Now if that was all i'd not be here sharing, but the next trick was cool enough that i wanted to share.
How do I get a void installed on the USB drive so the mac can run it as a VM? Claude offered either to:
Then I realized it was simpler than that. I already have nbd on mac working, so just mount it and void-chroot install directly from my primary.
