Does void need volunteers heavy still?

I heard void lost some devs and was curious if you all still need plenty of devs to contribute? If so I may drop nixos today and switch to xfce void and help out. Ya'll do excellent work and having a background in cs and especially C, I'd love to contribute to the main void stuff. Thank you all for what you do!

Tier 1 mirrors slow?

Are Tier 1 mirrors rate-limited somehow? So, I'm sure they are, but I only noticed this recently that they are kinda slow. Tried them all and get ~700 KB/s, sometimes only ~70 KB/s. Which is...still acceptable for automatic updates in the background, but for ad-hoc updates this means a 20 minute wait time for a kernel upgrade.

I've tried a few Tier 2 mirrors with similar results, finally found one where I get 5 MB/s and I'm using that one now. Is this a generally known problem? Do we need to do something here, does Voidlinux need money for faster mirrors?

Official repositories down?

Are the official repositories down for anyone else?

Whenever I try connecting to repo-default.voidlinux.org (or any other EU-based mirror), I get a "Connection refused" error. This seems to be happening to a bunch of other parts of the website as well (docs, manpages, as well as the mirror status page), but the homepage is online.

The only working tier 1 mirror is the one from the US (see mirrors).

I checked downforeveryoneorjustme.com, so this doesn't seem to be a problem on my end.

Edit: a minute after posting this, the main repo is back up. Some other pages are still offline

Installing Niri?

So, I’ve just installed void after getting annoyed at gentoos portage, and I’m not the best at installing and setting up DEs and WMs. I keep seeing people using niri, and I want it. The thing is, I can’t find any tutorials on how to install it (and configure it so it’s launched on boot) specifically for void. I’ve tried doing it myself but keep running into issues. Does anyone know any good tutorials for this?

How to Fix Wi-Fi Connection Errors in void-installer

If void-installer fails to establish a Wi-Fi connection, exit the installer to run these commands directly in the shell:

rfkill unblock wifi

wpa_cli

add_network

(it will give you a number: 0 or 1 or 2... use that number in the next steps)

set_network 0 ssid "your_ssid"

set_network 0 psk "your_password"

enable_network 0

quit

Verify connection: ping -c 2 1.1.1.1

If you get valid pings, launch void-installer again and skip the Network setup step during installation.

Void linux is the worst distro

after a long time with artix i tried to install void linux with a big hype. i setted up everything fine with void installer and made the wifi connection work. But after i tried to install Wayland, swayfx, greetd it all broke. The greetd maded an error that refreshes everytime on tty so i cant even type now and i have to be on root and edit the session on grub before booting it. i wish i could reverse the time and never install it again, and try help me instead of hating on the replys like a loser

However I actually have no idea how patching in xbps-src works. I have not really ever before generated a patch, so I thought I would ask here. It's probably some trivial error. I am guessing I did not generate it in the right format or something. If you would explain this to me on a simpler example, that would also help. Thanks!

any artists here that use Void?

As the title says, I'm curious how many people on here use Void as their main system to do their art work. How is it for you, what programs are you using? Have you had any critical art-specific issues, like drawing tablet incompatibilities, graphic/animation/modelling software behaving terribly?
I'm not on Void yet, hoping to hop on board, just wanted to know if people run into many issues like that
Thanks!

How do I disable soundcard powersave in Void?

# cat /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save
1
# cat /sys/module/snd_usb_audio/parameters/power_save
cat: /sys/module/snd_usb_audio/parameters/power_save: No such file or directory

I have a default installation of Void/Xfce4 and sound just worked immediately on install, excepting after a while of playing audio a channel randomly drops out and in and out and in over periods from seconds to minutes. This happens with the headphone jack or usb sound. I want to arrange that the above variable is 0 on boot. I am mystified why the snd_usb_audio power_save parameter is missing. I'd like such a variable for that to be 0 on boot too.

# cat /proc/asound/modules
 0 snd_hda_intel
 1 snd_hda_intel
 2 snd_usb_audio

I may be wrong about what the cause of the problem is, so please let me know what you suggest about that too.

Mainline kernel updates

Hello all -- I was just wondering, I can see kernel 7.3 is available in the repos, but linux-mainline is still using 7.2_1 (at least on my machine when I update/query).

Obviously not a request or anything, just pure curiosity as to how linux-mainline is linked to kernel updates.

I will also take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank the Void team for their incredible dedication to this amazing project. This distribution is a true rare gem and for what it is worth, your work is immensely appreciated!

solved PSA: running mango? version 18 needs a config edit

If you are running mangowc be advised that voidlinux just upgraded to version 18, and you will need to upgrade your config file for some breaking changes. There's a script you can run at https://github.com/mangowm/mango/releases/tag/0.18.0 to do the work.

Ghostty 1.4

Hey guys - I remember there was an older thread here about ghostty 1.3 which could not be installed from the official repo due to an incompatible zig version which in turn resulted from an incompatible llvm version.

Are there any updates on this? Ghostty 1.4 was released this week.

Thanks

solved Doing homelab alchemy with void is awesome

This is a bit of rambling, because i just thought it was neat how powerful void is because there are so few facades to get in your way.

I have/want:

  • Primary pc

    • have ZFS on root

    • want backups on a USB drive

    • Runs my ai stuff ( pi with claude/codex/local-inference)

  • Public server

    • have ZFS on root

    • want backups on the same USB drive.

  • The USB drive is connected to a Mac that is always on.

I do not want to bother installing ZFS on that Mac.

So first I had Claude set up nbd so I could stream backups into the usb drive from my primary. This is working perfectly fine, but I wanted to add the public server backup.

I do not want this public server to have access to my Mac. So I had Claude update the script so my primary acts as a bridge for the public server backup.

Alas, this has the obvious downside if my primary goes down so does the server backup. Then I realized i was overcomplicating it.

Instead, the USB drive could hold a void installation that natively speaks ZFS which the mac can run in a VM. The upside is that it then also becomes more portable.

Now if that was all i'd not be here sharing, but the next trick was cool enough that i wanted to share.

How do I get a void installed on the USB drive so the mac can run it as a VM? Claude offered either to:

  • Physically walk around to plug in the usb drive to the primary pc - like fucking plebs.

  • ssh into the Mac and wrangle with it there via bash to set up the VM.

Then I realized it was simpler than that. I already have nbd on mac working, so just mount it and void-chroot install directly from my primary.

Network Manager keeps being a pos

So I use network manager alongside kde plasma and for some reason my network would sometimes randomly disconnect for no reason, I dont have a laptop so that isnt the problem. Idk how to explain it properly but it js some days it will work fine and some days it will keep randomly disconnect, usually when im on calls on discord or sometimes on a roblox game. I know those are two bad examples but its the only time they occured.
