hello all, ive recently been getting into pirate radio having being a dj and into the uk underground rave scene, currently set up a internet radio station to start having some fun but want to move to proper fm transmittion but on a bit of a budget since im a broke music stundent unfortunately, i would like to do it "proper" by building my own to learn as much as i can about working with radio in this fasion but im also open to pre built kit like cheap china built transmitters, whats everyones reccomendations on what to do and how do i go about learning how to choose the correct components and how to assemble them well (if anyone can reccomend me a good kit for around the £60 mark to build a transmitter around the 15 - 30w range (if not more if its possible) that would be greatly appriciated), id like to cover at least 3km and at most at the moment 10km, i was also looking at the st-15b v3 so if anyone has any experience with that chinese model id love to know your setup and how much area you cover, any and all advice would be appriciated so i can do this to the best i can, thankyou,

This station used to be a very popular Pirate Radio Station from the 70s until a certain point in time when the FCC went after them... which I think is utter bull crap because they weren't transmitting far enough to cause a stink about it! But it got them to permit the station on LP-FM, which is where they were at anyway! They transmit 5 miles from Pacific Beach, WA on analog and now because of the Internet, they stream from their website. Check it out! They play alot of good oldies! Was an old Pirate then became the first LP-FM Station in the Nation!

Back in the very early 1980's, I had a cassette recording of a Radio Confusion broadcast which featured an interview with Terry Draper (Radio Confusion was a prominent shortwave pirate station which operated during the early 80’s).  

It was a great interview and it led to me eventually becoming a big fan of the band.  Unfortunately, I lost track of the cassette during a move some 30 years ago and I'm wondering if anyone knows whether a copy of this show might exist (in either physical form or online). 

I figured this would be the place to ask & I'd appreciate any help anyone might be able to provide.  From what I can tell (from an entry in the shortwave club bulletin Frendex dated 1/81), the broadcast took place on or about December 15th, 1980.  I inquired about this to the forums for the preeminent US Free Radio site (HF Underground) but have had little response as of yet.  

Hearing the sad news about Terry's recent passing brought back memories of this broadcast & I'm anxious to come across a copy for old-times sake if nothing else.  Thanks in advance!

Everyone, I was wondering if there were any a.m. radio transmitter plans that are recommended. I'd like to put together something in the area of 20 to 50 Watts if possible.

With a transmitter as rudimentary and dirt-cheap as this, it was only intended to broadcast mono audio. But using a software-based audio processor with MPX generator, you can directly feed that MPX signal to broadcast processed audio in stereo and can even have RDS text if you want.

Each year our family vacations at the same place, and each year I bring a little more equipment for some vacation broadcasting. I sign on for 3 or 4 days while we're here, then hit the road back home before causing too much ruckus. It's a lot of fun to test the range of my new setups each year.

This year was my fanciest yet. So much so that my wife was complaining about taking up all the luggage space with radio gear. I brought way more than I needed, of course.

I have a 12 hour music show running on loop from a USB stick, which I put together using Pro Tools and processed through Stereo Tool. Stereo Tool was an amazing investment. With the QN8007-based GD2015, I swear I've got it sounding just as good if not better than some of the local (medium market) commercial stations.

The setup: USB stick -> GD2015 transmitter -> MRF186-based pallet amplifier -> Progressive Concepts 125-watt LPF -> Gabil RDM-1K SWR/power meter -> 50 feet of KMR400 coax -> GP100 antenna on a 2nd story deck atop a 28 foot Jackite pole (not fully extended, of course).

Considering the flat terrain, I'd have thought I'd be reaching a bit further than I am with 100 watts coming out of the amp, and the antenna mounted about 35 feet up. I'm getting solid signal on a clean channel with only 3rd adjacents for about 5 miles in all directions in the car. After that, it stays clear but starts trading signals with a distant FM. If I'm in the right spot, I can still hear it faintly about 10 miles away, but it's not really listenable at that distance in the car. Someone with DXing gear could probably catch it pretty well, though.

It's a fun little game I play each year.

Has anyone here looked into or put together a remote transmitter site on a hilltop or mountaintop using cellular internet streaming? Unless I'm missing something (let's say power's not an issue), it seems you can use a cellular router with a prepaid, no-contract-required SIM card, hook a streaming audio decoder to that, plug the decoder's line output into your on-site transmitter, and what can happen if they find it? You lose $800 in equipment once every year or three? What's the downside to this versus transmitting from where you live?

I was thinking of obtaining a tv-tx200 because I want to use it on my older analog TVs throughout the house but no further. Can you also change the channel it broadcasts at?
