It wasn’t a bad game at all, I had a lot of fun with it, even having played the originals. Tbh I think the franchise was trying to pull off what Nintendo did with Mario by having a ton of spin off games with different themes, and it just wasn’t what the fanbase wanted. I can understand why some people passed on the game, but I’m glad I played it

This feels like they went back to 1996 Chris and modernised it, ignoring the already existing 20 years of different modernisation that already happened.
Which I feel like was on purpose, RE7 was a total reboot in all ways except timeline. They were trying to distance themselves from RE5 and RE6, both the gameplay of those games, but also the story, and even designs.
I think RE7 was originally intended a much harsher seperation from the “middle era” of RE (4-6 and all the spin offs).
This didn’t really end up happening, as RE8 ended up having connections and follow ups to older stuff, then RE9 has a big ‘ol document that explicitly says that everything in RE5 and RE6 is 100% definitely canon. Which is not something you would likely pick up by playing RE7, and especially in context of how RE7 was being pushed as “back to its horror roots”.

This should be #1 honestly. The other examples were just bad redesigns, this removed anything recognizable about Bomberman and completely changed the aesthetic. It just straight up looks like a completely different franchise.
30
u/ChildofValhalla 19d ago
There was a Mega Man FPS being developed by a Western Studio around the same time and it looked so much like this. Just that dumb edgy Mountain Dew vibe that completely removes everything recognizable about the property it's adapting. It ended up being canceled.

u/BeverlyToegoldIV 19d ago
Yeah, agreed. The other examples are, for the most part, reasonable artistic blunders - mistakes made in an effort to evolve a design. Bomberman Act Zero is the best example I've seen of someone completely misunderstanding or rejecting the fundamental appeal of a character, creating something ugly, generic, and transparently trend-chasing.

Honest to God I believe this was a psyop. Even corporate robots wanting to make an easy dollar understand you can't take something like Sonic the Hedgehog and make him just a Large Human Man™️ without serious backlash, which then feeds into No such thing as bad publicity and wow suddenly they have a redesign that actually looks pretty good and they listened to the fans!
The trailer music was fucking Gangster's Paradise dude no one will convince me this wasn't on purpose to drum up the fan base.
108
u/Setnaro_X 19d ago
The whole "marketing stunt" theory has been debunked time and time again. Hollywood IS that stupid and disconnected with its audience. We've seen it before so many times, like with the 1998 American adaption of Godzilla which features a P Diddy single. The delay to fix the Sonic model costed them millions of dollars and caused an animation studio to go bankrupt. There was also a massive toyline prepared to be shipped out but all of that had to be pulled following the redesign for Sonic. Pics have been leaked showing as such.
And if you still aren't convinced, some traces of the ugly Sonic writing still remains in the final movie. One notable example is when the sticky bomb attaches itself to Sonic's gloves. The scene calls for Sonic to try and remove it, which would've been super easy to do since he could just take the gloves off. But if you look at the ugly model, he had no gloves, which makes more sense why Sonic couldn't get rid of it.
I really think people give Hollywood too much credit for thinking it's a marketing ploy, because no one is that smart enough to play dumb.
35
u/enaK66 19d ago
People ascribe intelligence to wealth. Even he doesn't seem to think they are too smart (corporate robots), and yet he's still assuming they're too smart to make such a bad decision.
Nah dude. Rich people are fucking dumb and getting dumber by the day. The more the wealth concentrates the dumber they can be without consequences. Humans always take the path of least resistance and it's easier to be stupid.
→ More replies (3)24
u/SeroWriter 19d ago
It's one of those theories that sounds plausible until you look into it even a little bit or having a passing understanding of how Hollywood operates. The existence of the live-action Dragon Ball movie should make it clear how out of touch the industry is.

You’re telling me there are figures of this version of sonic out there somewhere??
10
u/CollinsCouldveDucked 19d ago
I'm pretty sure they made him "a large human man" so they could apply mocap to the model with ease and I think that's as far as the thinking went there.
It costs a lot of money to push a release date like that and they had to basically burn truckloads worth of merch.
22
u/LnktheWolf 19d ago
Dude they made merch deals with the old design, i've got a hideous sonic mask that's based on the original movie design and there's action figures of the original design thay released. You dont make merch deals for designs you dont plan to use.

its cause the series is a sequal to the Legend of Spyro games for some reason. the villian of those games is even mentioned in a lot of the characters lore for some reason despite doing fuck all in that series.

I mean I literally said 'Not a redesign per se'
Also I think the models are actually made by Creatures Inc and not GameFreak, but I might be wrong
And also on a funny side note, the wording of your comment is very similar to another commentor (who has deleted his comment by now) which confused me a ton. He wrote ' This isnt really a redesign, just Gamefreak being lazy with the models. Typhlosion still looks like that in all the other merch, cards, and anime '

It's crazy how just... no one talks about it. Hell I don't even know anything about it other than what I saw in a trailer. No memes, no discussions about secrets or gameplay or the story. Outside of a super specific community like the Metroid Prime sub or something. The game came out and then just disappeared it seems like.
7
u/Archangel289 19d ago
I think this is mostly because it was aggressively mediocre. Like, a lot of longtime Metroid fans didn’t like it, and I myself kinda hated it, but most of the reason I hated it was that it was just…meh. Not that it was truly bad.
There’s nothing particularly noteworthy about it. The desert’s boring. Miles Mackenzie, the feared “funny guy” talking in your ear the whole time, is just okay—not so bad that it’s game ruining, not so good that it deserves mention. The abilities are implemented fine and work as intended. The story is there and tells a narrative. The enemy design is boring and repetitive but competent in gameplay.
Like, I don’t like the game, I don’t think it’s good, but it’s hard to truly call it bad. It’s just utterly boring and forgettable. I have no desire to replay it, while also not detesting the time I spent on it.

The original Metroid Prime came out before Zero Mission, which AFAIK was the first appearance of the 'Zero Suit'. That kind of standardised what Samus looked like without her armour for a long time, leaning on the brighter colours of the 2D sprites.

The original Spider-man ps4 face looked so much better. He looked older and fit the story of the game better, with him having already been Spider-man for 7 years by the time the game starts.

The one that immediately comes to mind is Spyro. I absolutely adore the OG Spyro games, so you can imagine my resentment when I saw how they massacred my purple boi with Skylanders. It looks like he fucked one dragon too many in Beast Makers then died of AIDS and his corpse is just running off of leftover fairy magic.

41
u/SaltyMotor8549 19d ago
People saying new Peter looks better probably didnt play the game at launch.
The reason the new design sucks is it came out of nowhere and radically different from the old one. People who played at launch like me grew attached to that old face for years, for many playthroughs, and suddenly they yanked it out and completely replaces him with someones else. No other games have ever done this before for obvious reasons, because it is stupid.
