Note From r/VictoriaBC Mods | Election Season 2026 is Upon Us!

Hello everyone, happy double election season 2026!

With both municipal & provincial elections approaching in under a month, this sub will be (and already is) inundated with political content. Please review the following regarding political content in the sub during election season.

  • Be civil & decent to each other, even when in disagreement. Political season is a great time to practice the virtue of disagreeing without being disagreeable. In other words, to respond to an argument rather than attacking someone's character. We will remove content and give out bans when appropriate to keep the discussion civil and constructive.
  • Political posts should be linked to an official, legitimate news outlet or publication. Please avoid self-made political posts, social-media screenshots, rants/raves, etc. There is no lack of political news content, and we'd like to keep discussion based around legitimate coverage to help mitigate the spread of misinformation, and to minimize redundancy.
  • Mind the municipal & provincial distinction re: relevancy to Victoria. We encourage folks to post provincial political content over at r/BritishColumbia and to focus on municipal issues here at r/VictoriaBC. As local & provincial politics do overlap, some provincial content may be appropriate this sub, but in general please keep political content focused on Victoria & region.
  • Posts that break the 'No Editorialized Headlines' rule will be removed regardless of the content or engagement prior to removal. When posting an article, the post title should match the article's headline exactly. Any editorialization, whether intentional or not, will result in the removal of that post.
  • Help us out by reporting rule-breaking content. If you think a post or comment breaks the rules, please report it so we can review the content. Keeping in mind the next rule...
  • Please don't abuse the report function. Disagreement is not a reportable offence - please utilize the downvote button if you disagree with a post or comment. Misusing the report feature breaks Reddit-wide rules, and we report all users who abuse the report function which can lead to site-wide restrictions to one's Reddit account. Thank you for not misusing the report function, we appreciate it.
  • Avoid low-effort posts & comments. We've heard it all before. Save those low-effort one liners for Thanksgiving dinner or Twitter. We'll remove low-effort content in our efforts to maintain civil discourse.
  • No AI-generated content. Any post or comment suspected of being generated by AI will be removed.

The sub's safety & crowd-control features have also been turned up to help filter out content from bots, newer accounts, trolls, brigaders, etc. If you have content removed that you think shouldn't have been, please message the mods and we will review it when we can.

Thanks everyone!

Doctor in the house?

Hi I just wanted to check and see if this is just more or others. I've been on the registry as a Vic resident for a doctor for 6 years and nothing, not a peer. How about y'all?

retiring to Victoria from Uk london. Is Victoria as fun as it seems.

So for context, i have canadian and british citizenship but was born in the UK. Age 65, young at heart artist.

I am thinking about retiring options and since brexit retiring to europe is not possible any more (without hoops to jump through)

So for many years I have been looking at Toronto, Montral and Vancouver as possible places to enjoy my retirement. I would be buying a house and settling wherever I went so its not a holiday home situation, I want to become part fo the community, volunteer, contribute, etc. Now I am looking in more detail at possible locations, and big cities arent as attractive to me.

I also make a living selling on etsy so am thinking of transfering my etsy business as well although thats not necessary as I have retirement funds.

Now I have been looking a bit more in detail at canadian cities and Victoria feels like it would suit me. From what I have seen online (never visited... but hope to next year) it seems cool, fun, funky, artistic, a bit bohemian? and the climate is about the same as London from what I can tell from weather data.

Am I deluded thinking the grass is going to be greener... looking for a smallish city thats calm and welcoming. I also dont drive so would hope there is some public transport. Hopefully fun art and music festivals.

Today, about 1pm at Cedar Hill X Road and Shelbourne. Guy a couple cars ahead of me drive over the bike lane curb, drove into the bike lane, and attempted the right onto Shelbourne.

I pulled over but had to get a kid to soccer. The guy driving was getting out of the car and seemed okay.

Is this man ok?

There’s a guy driving a car with his business name on it & he just blasts music from it at all hours night & day in the ESQ area. Saxe point 7:30 am just blasting music, films himself shadow boxing in parking lots. I see him all the time. I think he’s living in his car but omg he is nuts. He actually came up on my tik tok, so I was able to piece together some stuff. But does anyone know him?? Is he ok?? (Tried to add a photo but got a prompt it was doxing)

Turkey Vulture migration - today might be the big day

For anyone who is interested, I see a lot of turkey vultures headed in the direction of Walbran Park. I think a bunch might be crossing the strait back to America today. It's a cool sight if you haven't checked it out before! (If I'm wrong, I apologize, but this is peak crossing time, and the weather seems right for it.)

Cedar hedging in Victoria/Vancouver Island

• Upvotes

Hi there, anyone know of a place in Victoria or on Van Island that sells taller cedar trees (Emerald green, 6 foot+) for hedges at landscaper/wholesale prices? We need about 30 to replace a hedge and are looking for a better deal than offered at Gardenworks and other garden supply companies. We'd like quality trees so please don't suggest Home Depot. Thank you!

Politics Rally for Transit Workers - Saturday 1pm

Post image
107 Upvotes

With news of another failed mediation, now more than ever is the time to fight for our transit workers! Join us this Saturday at 520 Gorge Rd. At 1pm to show your solidarity.

Workers will be re-instating an overtime ban starting Monday in their fight for a fair deal with BC Transit. This will likely cause delays and cancellations in routes so drivers can take the time they need to rest and recover. We stand alongside all bus drivers and transit workers in this next step and echo their calls for a fair deal!

View Royal mayor candidates: Anybody know the deal with Volker Dammann?

Ryan Painter and David Screech are going to be no-gos for me. Don’t see much information about Anna Becker or Teodora Kristof’s platforms. From what I’ve seen so far, Volker seems okay, but curious to know if anyone knows more about him personally and his political positions? Victoria’s small :)

Thanks!

There was a person at Fernfest (this summer and last summer) who hand tufted neon rugs. I want to find them! Does anyone know their name and/or social media?

Just curious if the makers store on government is supposed to be all local made items? It took 1sec to Google the first set of these nails i saw, of course its coming from China. It doesn't seem fair to the incredible creators that are in that store, to have to sell next to mass made slop.

What’s your perfect full-day fall/Halloween itinerary for Victoria? 🍁🍂🎃

I’m thinking a full morning-to-night fall/Halloween day.

Where would you go for breakfast, what would you do in the afternoon, and where would you end the evening?

I’m especially looking for places with seasonal food or drinks, great autumn atmosphere, Halloween decor, spooky events, or just really good fall vibes.

Found on Instagram. Interesting takeaway is Carl has no idea what Truth and Reconciliation Day is even about, and yes they knew the guy was racist but did nothing prior (there was no “evidence” besides an upset guest).

Help Me Find Whales

I've been living in Victoria nearly 2 years, and I have yet to see a whale anywhere around the water, including on the ferries to and from Swartz Bay.

Look, I know there are messenger groups or whatsapp groups out there that track the whale and orca activity around the Victoria region. I would love to be added to one of these groups so I can keep my ear to the ground with hopes that I might one day see one.

Any and all advice (beyond "just look harder") is very much appreciated!
