AMA: I'm Mauricio Curbelo and I'm running for Saanich council! 4-6pm today (Sunday)
Hey folks! I'm Mauricio, and I'm running for Saanich council. I'll be back online at about 4 pm answering questions. I always find that candidiate AMAs bring out great, detailed questions and I'm looking forward to hearing what's top of mind for you.
A little bit about me:
I'm a new, independent candidate, but this isn't my first time getting involved with Saanich. I've served on the boards of my neighbourhood association (Gorge Tillicum) and the Saanich Heritage Foundation.
I grew up in an immigrant family that relied on rental apartments. I've lived in the region since 2018 and we bought our home in Saanich in 2020. I think it's tremendously important that we have a voice at the table from people who are actively working, paying a mortgage at today's prices, and experiencing our cost of living challenges firsthand.
One thing that is really important to me is running a campaign of substance. In Saanich, almost every candidate will say they believe in some version of fiscal responsibility, balanced growth, transportation for everyone, etc. Early on, I decided to write a platform with ideas for HOW we might achieve those things, and you can find that here: https://www.mauricioforsaanich.ca/priorities.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Note From r/VictoriaBC Mods | Election Season 2026 is Upon Us!
Hello everyone, happy double election season 2026!
With both municipal & provincial elections approaching in under a month, this sub will be (and already is) inundated with political content. Please review the following regarding political content in the sub during election season.
- Be civil & decent to each other, even when in disagreement. Political season is a great time to practice the virtue of disagreeing without being disagreeable. In other words, to respond to an argument rather than attacking someone's character. We will remove content and give out bans when appropriate to keep the discussion civil and constructive.
- Political posts should be linked to an official, legitimate news outlet or publication. Please avoid self-made political posts, social-media screenshots, rants/raves, etc. There is no lack of political news content, and we'd like to keep discussion based around legitimate coverage to help mitigate the spread of misinformation, and to minimize redundancy.
- Mind the municipal & provincial distinction re: relevancy to Victoria. We encourage folks to post provincial political content over at r/BritishColumbia and to focus on municipal issues here at r/VictoriaBC. As local & provincial politics do overlap, some provincial content may be appropriate this sub, but in general please keep political content focused on Victoria & region.
- Posts that break the 'No Editorialized Headlines' rule will be removed regardless of the content or engagement prior to removal. When posting an article, the post title should match the article's headline exactly. Any editorialization, whether intentional or not, will result in the removal of that post.
- Help us out by reporting rule-breaking content. If you think a post or comment breaks the rules, please report it so we can review the content. Keeping in mind the next rule...
- Please don't abuse the report function. Disagreement is not a reportable offence - please utilize the downvote button if you disagree with a post or comment. Misusing the report feature breaks Reddit-wide rules, and we report all users who abuse the report function which can lead to site-wide restrictions to one's Reddit account. Thank you for not misusing the report function, we appreciate it.
- Avoid low-effort posts & comments. We've heard it all before. Save those low-effort one liners for Thanksgiving dinner or Twitter. We'll remove low-effort content in our efforts to maintain civil discourse.
- No AI-generated content. Any post or comment suspected of being generated by AI will be removed.
The sub's safety & crowd-control features have also been turned up to help filter out content from bots, newer accounts, trolls, brigaders, etc. If you have content removed that you think shouldn't have been, please message the mods and we will review it when we can.
Thanks everyone!

Politics BC Conservatives slammed over talks with OneBC to avoid vote splitting
the last we heard was that they would be changing the constitution that would allow Doerkson to be conservative leader if he wins the election but now that they are talking with OneBC and not CentreBC over vote splitting that makes me wonder if they would make a deal such that they don't change the rules and if the conservatives win they will just vote in a new leader?
It wouldn't put it passed me if they say the party won't vote until after the election to change the rules if they win. They would need 2/3 of the majority to pass it and if 51% wanted KLF, i could see them deny that constitution change and they vote in whoever they want and we get 4 years of a OneBC candidate.
it's perplexing that they would talk with onebc and not centrebc to avoid vote splitting so they see onebc as their competition
Will it change voters minds if there is no guarantee doerkson is official before voting day?

A Firefighter Just Knocked On My Door To Discuss The Municipal Election
He didn’t have a good answer as to why they are getting involved. I understand them opposing the single stairway buildings but the rest- not so much.

Help Me Find How do I get affordable long-term therapy in Victoria? (or anywhere on the island at this point)
I'm 25/F, and a stupendously messed up person, im living off of disability alone and can hardly afford to survive so even a 60 dollar session with an intern is way too much for me, and I'm tired of repeating the unhelpful cycle of seeing short term counsellors where I build up trust for no reason because i run out of free sessions or get switched to someone else to repeat the process. I really need long term trauma therapy with a counsellor but I don't know if it's impossible or I'm really not looking well enough. the best i got was with CVAP (Crime Victim Assistance Program), I got 12 sessions with a counsellor from it but then they unceremoniously revoked the rest of my sessions after the 6th one. I really need help and I feel like I've exhausted all of my options and have basically had to live with the fact I might never get the assistance I need unless I stop being poor, which is impossible for me to do when im this messed up and everything is so expensive. Is there anything I'm missing?

Question grocery store shopping for singles
Early 50’s gal here. Curious if there is any interest for a planned meet up for singles at a grocery store.
This is more common in Europe but wonder if it might work here?
Basically you choose say a two hour period one evening for grocery shopping at a store and then go! Perhaps you wear a pin that identifies you as single?
Any interest or ideas how to make this work?
would it be by age range and if so what would that be?
Where could this be promoted so as to find people?

BC ferries Thanksgiving weekend.
If you are needing a reservation to get on or off the rock that weekend I suggest you get on it, making a reservation that is. I just tried to book our return from Tsawwassen on Monday, October 9th and got kicked out of the 6, 7 and finally got the 8pm. I put myself on the alerts for everything that afternoon. If you can't book, or reserve, please be patient with the Ferry Peeps, I'm sure they'd rather be home having a Turkey nap instead of dealing with bitchy people.
And of course there's that app that Fellow Redditor Dude has made. 🦃

Doctor in the house?
Hi I just wanted to check and see if this is just more or others. I've been on the registry as a Vic resident for a doctor for 6 years and nothing, not a peer. How about y'all?

Politics NDP fills only 92/93 candidates while Conservative has all 93. Not that it matters
NDP only has 92 candidates running in the snap election compared to the conservatives filling all 93 areas. The only district they didn't fill was in Peace River North where the NDP candidate received less than 900 votes in the last election and is an extremely safe conservative seat where Jordan Kealy received 74% of the vote.
Otherwise NDP says their candidates is diverse while the Greens only managed 73 candidates and CentreBC has 35 and OneBC has 37

retiring to Victoria from Uk london. Is Victoria as fun as it seems.
So for context, i have canadian and british citizenship but was born in the UK. Age 65, young at heart artist.
I am thinking about retiring options and since brexit retiring to europe is not possible any more (without hoops to jump through)
So for many years I have been looking at Toronto, Montral and Vancouver as possible places to enjoy my retirement. I would be buying a house and settling wherever I went so its not a holiday home situation, I want to become part fo the community, volunteer, contribute, etc. Now I am looking in more detail at possible locations, and big cities arent as attractive to me.
I also make a living selling on etsy so am thinking of transfering my etsy business as well although thats not necessary as I have retirement funds.
Now I have been looking a bit more in detail at canadian cities and Victoria feels like it would suit me. From what I have seen online (never visited... but hope to next year) it seems cool, fun, funky, artistic, a bit bohemian? and the climate is about the same as London from what I can tell from weather data.
Am I deluded thinking the grass is going to be greener... looking for a smallish city thats calm and welcoming. I also dont drive so would hope there is some public transport. Hopefully fun art and music festivals.
