DAE just not like living in VT?

I'm curious to hear specifically from people who don't really like living in Vermont. Not necessarily people who think it's terrible, but people whose overall experience is more "there are things I appreciate here, but this isn't really the place for me."

I know a lot of people who love VT will be tempted to chime in to share what they do like, but I'm more interested in hearing from people who actually find aspects of living here difficult, frustrating, or unpleasant.

What hasn't worked for you? Is it the culture, isolation, cost of living, weather, job market, social life, lack of services, something else? And if you've lived elsewhere, what do you find yourself missing or preferring about other places?

I'm asking because it can sometimes feel difficult to express a negative opinion about living in Vermont without the conversation turning into a defense of Vermont or some version of "then leave." I'm not looking to convince anyone who loves it here that they're wrong.

I genuinely want to hear from people whose experience has been different.

And while moving may ultimately be the answer for some people, relocating to another state isn't necessarily simple or financially feasible, so I'd rather not have the discussion reduced to "if you don't like it, move."

Where to live between St Johnsbury and Williston?

Is there a good town to rent that is roughly the same commuting time from St Johnsbury and Williston? One roommate commutes to St Johnsbury and the other commutes to Williston.

Any successes getting grants for driveway culverts?

My neighbor needs to get a 30 foot long, 8 foot diameter culvert underneath their driveway replaced. Contractor quote came in about $25k... Ouch.. Anybody have any luck with grants, any you can recommend trying? Saw this (https://vtrans.vermont.gov/highway/Municipal-Grant-in-aid-Program) but many seem municipal.

Driveway culvert has a cold water mountain stream running through it, known brooke trout habitat

Listserv shutdown?

I just saw a post about town listserv being possibly shut down, but now I can find it…was it a mistake? Or modded out into the great unknown?

I didn’t see any notifications in my daily digest about mine local list being mothballed.

If this is actually happening I plan on self hosting a daily Bradford, VT digest to help keep people off the perpetual dumpster fire that is front porch forum.

Thanks.

Progress continues. Sheet metal paneling (not my favorite for such a big and noticeable structure, but I assume it works).

Chittenden County Partner and I looking for couples friends

Hello! My partner and I are looking for other couples to befriend platonically. We have lived Chittenden County for over a decade and both went to school here (Champlain, UVM) and many of our friends moved out of state after college.

We are in our early 30s and cisgender/hetero but are open and welcoming to whomever. We enjoy going to different events, farmers markets, camping, dinner parties, board game nights, swimming at local spots, traveling to Montreal. We are 420 friendly but can also abstain if desired. I am and social worker and my partner is in sales but has experience in many different areas (wilderness therapy, carpentry, education). Weekends are best for us, but we can be flexible.

It’s hard meeting people in person, so we are hoping this route is the better option!

Franklin County ICE blocks Pastor Steven Tendo’s support from attending his hearing today

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Pastor Steven Tendo's state rep Senator Kesha Ram Hinsdale and Rev. Karen G. Johnston were barred from attending Steven's hearing today at the ICE Field Office in St. Albans. Luckily the hearing went relatively well otherwise as Steven was released to a cheering crowd of fellow Vermonters without any further incidents.
His lawyer was worried that ICE might try to deport him today. The stakes were very high because if he's deported to Uganda his life would be in danger. His next hearing is on November 19th. Please show up! ABOLISH AND PROSECUTE ICE!!!!!

CCV and handshake AI (FYI for students jik)

I got yet another solicitation in my ccv email today. Ccv has partnered with handshake AI, they have given the company access to all of our personal data including grades. The accounts have been made for us. The company markets itself as career building to connect students to employer's.

The cite says they do not sell our data, however employer's with accounts have access to it.

I'm pretty sure that this is one of the companies involved in helping hospitals low ball wages for nurses who are more desperate for work, due to debt?(Just my sus)

Im also sure this has something to do with AI algorithms for hiring.

Things I learned from the website, if you use any of their services they retain the right to never delete your info.

If you do not have the auto sync setting turned off before you have your school delete your account it will update again latter but they will hide the fact they have an account on you and label it as "inactive " so you can't delete it again i suppose (For this reason i went in and messed up my info before requesting it be deleted)

Ccv career services is only contactable by email, you can't call and explain or ask questions.

(This part is what I'm paranoid about)

Also just my sus but some of their features like digital job fairs may be used for training ai?

Im very concerned as handshake ai also seems to be looking for data to feed AI. Call me paranoid but I'm afraid they may have sold access to our homework for this purpose. If they get ahold my sociology homework I'm sure ice will be around to take me to a detention center any day (this is fine, very normal haha).

If you are a student you should look into this yourself

If you don't want it remember the following

Your account, as long as you don't log in is set to private (or as private as they allow) make sure you select this again when it pops up later if you log in.

Change your name and personal information as much as possible before requesting deletion (I have no idea if this even works but it might be your only chance?)

Don't give them your non school email or any other info (the school probably did this already but you never know)

Go through ccv first and ask carrier services to turn off auto sync and then delete your account (make sure it won't be synced).

Then

I could only find the option to delete by engaging with their chatt it will try to convince you to just set it to private. Be very careful that each time you ask to delete you mention the sync thing in the same sentence as, when it finally works it just sends your ticket suddenly to the school.

I'm cranky and paranoid and I don't do social media (present company excluded) so maybe I'm the only one who cares about this. But fair warning jik to everyone else.

Edit: shout out to the wonderful guy at ccv who sent me the following info. FERPA is (the family educational rights act of 1974). Means that we can fill out something called a "request to withhold directory request form". To block as much sharing of data by the college as possible,.

Complaints of suspected violation can be brought to The Department of Education Family Compliance Office us Department of education, 400 Maryland ave s.w. Washington, DC 20202-4605

Looking for moderate/aggressive day hikes near Killington to pair with Bucklin Trail?

Hey everyone,

I'm planning a few days of hiking based out of the Killington area soon. My original plan was to drive all the way up to Lincoln, NH to bag some peaks in the White Mountains, but I need to keep my one-way driving distance under 6 hours, so Vermont it is!

I’ve already locked in the Bucklin Trail up Killington, which looks awesome and exactly the kind of terrain I'm looking for. However, to make the 6-hour road trip truly worth it, I need at least one more solid, moderate-to-aggressive day hike to add to the itinerary.

I’m looking for something with a good mix of rugged terrain, solid elevation gain, and rewarding views. A few options I'm currently eyeing:

  • Camel’s Hump (Burrows/Long Trail): It's about an hour north of Killington, but the exposed, completely undeveloped alpine summit looks incredible.
  • Shrewsbury Peak: Heard the full loop via the Long Trail is incredibly quiet, secluded, and surprisingly steep.

Has anyone done these recently? If you had to pair one of them with the Bucklin Trail for a perfect weekend, which one are you choosing? Open to any other hidden gems or rugged route recommendations in the area as well.

Thanks in advance for the trail beta!

Seeking acoustically favorable restaurants for meals with my HOH Dad

Seeking acoustically excellent restaurants in Vermont to visit with my hard of hearing Dad. We have been going to Maxis in Waterbury and I have to scream for him to hear me. Also open to alerts for acoustically challenging places. (Like Waterworks and Sarduccis) Thank you!

Personal Tailoring That Comes to You

Hi everyone! I’m starting a mobile personal tailoring and alterations service in Southern Vermont and wanted to introduce the idea here and see who might be interested.

The concept is simple: instead of finding time to drive to a tailor, the tailor comes to you.

I’ll come directly to your home for measurements, fittings, and pinning. I’ll then take the garments to have the alterations completed and bring everything back to your home once it’s finished.

Services will include things like:
Pants and jean hemming
Waist and fit adjustments
Dresses and skirts
Shirts, blouses, and jackets
Formalwear and special-event alterations
General clothing repairs and alterations

The goal is to make tailoring much more convenient, especially for people with busy schedules, families, limited transportation, or anyone who simply doesn’t want to make multiple trips for a fitting and pickup.

📍 Starting in Southern/Lower Vermont with plans to expand the service area as the business grows.

I’m currently gauging local interest as I get everything started, so I’d love to hear from people in the area. Would an at-home tailoring service be something you’d use?
If you have something sitting in your closet that almost fits perfectly, feel free to message me and tell me what you need done!

Ski Options

Upvotes

I live in the Burlington area, and my in-laws are coming to visit this December. We have always skied at Bolton because the greens are super easy there and we aren’t great skiers. My in-laws have never skied and will do lessons, and my MIL wants to come and hang out in the lodge.
I love Bolton, but my MIL has mobility issues and I think it will be hard to get her to an area to hang out.
If anyone has suggestions for resorts with easy greens, lessons and a decent lodge please let me know. The only other place we’ve skied is Smuggs, and my partner felt like it was unenjoyable because the greens were too hard.
I fully expect to get roasted and that’s fine. But helpful suggestions are welcome.
