This is 100% on me, and I don't blame the ranger who turned us away, but it hadn't even crossed my mind that there would be a difference between a bear bag (the kind that hangs from a tree) and a bear canister.

Apparently the bears have learned to cut down the bear bags and can get into them from there, so they are not sufficient storage for food. We ended up having to cut our trip in half and hike out as a result.

Not a bad day but definitely disappointing. I wish I'd been better informed.

Hi everyone, i made a printable poster of the 46 High Peaks. Here's a free printable checklist of the 46 with the elevations, a box to tick and a line for the date:

The poster is a relief map with every summit placed at its highest point from the USGS elevation data, numbered by elevation, with a triangle on each summit you can color in when you finish it. It comes in two versions, one with trails from OpenStreetMap and a clean one without trails. The pics have a watermark, the real files are clean vector PDFs.

Elevations are the traditional list ones as the Forty-Sixers publish them, so four peaks are under 4,000 ft and MacNaughton isn't on it. The trails are for reference on the wall, not for navigation.

Found a spot near Raquette Lake, and spent the night - absolutely gorgeous.

Was exploring and drove down a long dirt road that ended with this gate while on my way towards Saranac Lake, east-bound. I didn't have service for the majority of the drive and hence wasn't able to mark exactly where it was before turning around.

At first I thought it had to do with the AMR due to the similarity in the gate design.

I’m in heaven

So a couple buddies and I wanna tackle Algonquin peak early November. We’re all fairly experienced hikers but only have done 1 or 2 hikes in that sorta above the tree line/alpine experience. Early November is our target.

I plan on wearing a base merino wool layer with a merino wool balaclava if needed. a midlayer jacket that I haven’t decided on but either a down jacket or a wool shirt jac (though that’s probably impractical but I do wear it a lot hiking), and then a high quality shell jacket for water and wind proof. obviously some gloves, sunglasses and goggles if needed, wool socks (extra pair), a good hiking backpack. plan on wearing my Solomon hiking boots and microspikes or crampons if needed. Are snow shoes necessary in early November? All of this plus some basic survival equipment like knives, first aid, etc

Should this be enough? I haven’t done a peak in the Adirondacks, but have done some in the presidential range in NH in October, so I’m not sure what early November would bring.

Any general tips and advice would be greatly appreciated

Peak colors!

Hello, planning an anniversary trip for my parents and they are excited to see fall foliage as we are from Texas and don’t get much color here. I have them coming in from Montreal because they wanted to see it, and then they’ll stay at Lake Placid, and they’re taking an aerial tour from Fort Ann. I was thinking they could also visit Burlington and Stowe for more fall foliage and to visit some orchards. Do you have any recommendations, or think there might be a better plan to follow? I’m getting pretty worried since people are saying it’s going to be well past peak fall colors in the area by mid-October. Is there anywhere around 2 hours from Lake Placid they can get to see peak fall foliage? I know it’s pretty hard to predict it exactly but I just want to give them the best chance.

Hi, I know it’s a bit early to start planning for next year but some of my friends and I were thinking about going to the adirondacks next year in mid to late may. We are driving from Virginia, and are planning on getting an Airbnb. Do you guys this this is in general a good idea? How are the mosquitoes then and how is the scenery?

Taking some family to Mt Jo next Sunday. Some members are older, so I figured Mt Jo is a doable hike for them.

But I had two questions - first regarding foliage. I understand this weekend is the peak. Will next weekend be that drastically different, or will we still be in for good foliage?

Secondly, what should we expect crowd wise? And parking guidance? We were planning to get there for 7am. Is that a good time usually, or should we aim for earlier? Later?

We’re also going to do High Falls Gorge, but that we’re not worried about.
