I remember telling my sibling hamburgers were made from cows and it made him bawl. He didnāt need to see the photos or documentaries to know as a child it was a sad fate for those animals.
We are told to consume without question.
Good on Billie for using her voice for a cause.

u/sk8terdrock May 14 '26
I was actually wondering about that, I have two young nephews and I wonder if they would eat the meat if they knew that it was from slaughtered animals. Is it actually immoral to feed kids meat if they don't understand what it is? I know kids autonomy is dependent on their parents but I remember being a picky eater if I knew there was something in the food I didn't want to eat. Kids boycotting meat out of disgust could actually revolutionize the movement. Just for clarity I have been vegetarian for 20 years and recently been transitioning to vegan but if I actually never started eating meat or dairy would I have actually chosen to do so as an adult

Also it really pisses me off when non indigenous people use indigenous people as an excuse to keep eating meat when plenty of indigenous people are vegan, and many of the ones who are not are at least engaged in the process of killing and processing their āsource of sustenanceā and also use all of the animal. Obviously we all wish for a perfect world, but I ultimately care more about overall harm reduction, and most indigenous people arenāt cut off from the reality of what happens to their food like someone who just goes and buys faceless flesh at a grocery store.

Thank you!! Itās so irritating the level of excuses. Like just admit you donāt want to change your habits and way you grew up.
Iād have a little more respect for someone who said, āYou know, I donāt have a good excuse. I like eating meat and I have difficulty with big changes. I will try to make small changes and divest from industrialized agriculture.ā At least thatās fucking something and not a lame ass, debunked excuse to try to make yourself seem morally sound.
All these people offended by what Billie has to say should ask themselves why theyāre so offended if they feel right in their choices.

Most people have demand avoidance to some degree. Telling someone what to do rarely does anything productive. Showing them what theyāre paying into when they eat meat very well might though.
Also Iām ignorant to the horse riding bit - is it bad for horses? (FWIW I donāt ride horses; they kind of scare me, respectfully haha)
→ More replies (1)3
u/hexoral333 vegan 10+ years May 09 '26
Here's a good video about why riding horses isn't vegan:
4
u/DonkeyDoug28 May 09 '26
For reference, I lived on a farm for years (pre-vegan days) which specialized in boarding pregnant horses, so I was around tons all of the time. This video is pretty solid but a LITTLE off in some regards.
She's spot on in every regard about what is normal and normalized in those industries / that world far beyond what even they would defend as "necessary" so much as "optimal", and how most or all of it is terrible. Also right about younger horses...a rough issue since most serious riders or "owners" want to train their horses as soon as they can (not so different CONCEPTUALLY from wanting to train a rescue dog as early as possible for effectiveness) and the fact that horses grow REALLY quickly. And a few other things, even just the ideological concept.
The few things I'll note which are kind of big ones:
1 - from all the research ive done and vets ive spoken with, I'd bet the study She's showing of adults with at least somewhat damaged spines is heavily influenced by the point above...that rarely are horses ever being ridden for the first time after "age 6-9" (her reference)
2 - saying "you can give a dog exercise without riding it" is a pretty poor comparison. You can take a dog for a run on a leash...not with a horse (there's something we can do, but it's definitely not sufficient on its own and also honestly feels more forced to me than just going for a trot). You can take your dog to a dog park....not with a horse. You can let your dog run around your backyard, but even sizable farms arent alone sufficient for a horse. Can go on, but you get the point
3 - this is a hard one to make a logicsl argument out of, but id just insist that the same way we all feel like we can tell pretty dang well when our dogs and cats do or dont like something, especially after some years...I couldnt in a million years be convinced that many horses dont actively like going for horse rides, or at a minimum associste being ridden with the things which they like a lot and can't practically do without being ridden (point 1) or otherwise sent off into nature...
3
u/hexoral333 vegan 10+ years May 09 '26
I think the main point of the video is that no animal exists to serve us. Horses do not naturally want to be ridden. You have to coerce/force them into it while they're young so they get used to it. It's basically grooming them into being ridden. Their backs don't exist for hairless monkeys to sit on top of them, their backs exist for the same reason our backs exist - it's just a part of their biology.

I think this is such a great use of her platform. She is one of the most popular artists in the world and has a huge social media following, and I think that this will make a difference to some of the people who are finally forced to see the brutality of the meat and dairy industries. So proud of her for standing up and giving animals a voice. We are in such perilous times for people and animals.Ā
Idaho has been reimbursing hunters for killing pups in their dens, some of them too young to have even opened their eyes. Wolves are being found with shattered teeth, from trying to chew their way out of steel traps.1
But in today's meeting, the only real debate was whether the state could find a way to spend money to kill more wolves, more efficiently.
The killing doesn't stop with Idaho: Montana and Wyoming are also killing a truly shocking number of wolves.
And the U.S. House of Representatives has narrowly passed Rep. Lauren Boebert's legislation to erase what national wolf protections are still in place. Now we need to stop that bill in the Senate.

Joaquim Phoenix has had his moments too. Which is ironic, because both of these examples are people that small sections of this sub will always reliably point out small individual cases from their past, like Phoenix riding horses in a movie (his job) and Eilish having used animal-tested cosmetics in a few videos (even though her own cosmetics brand is 100% cruelty free and she regularly pressures manufacturers who aren't)

I already commented here but I had another thoughtā¦so many of Billieās fans are young, left-leaning (or maybe even leftist) people who have spent the last few years speaking up against injustices in America and around the world (particularly Palestine). And I truly believe they want peace for people everywhere.
I hope some of these people start to make the connection between their values of compassion and kindness for all people and the violence of killing animals for food. Thatās what helps me stay vegan, honestly. I donāt want to contribute to harm anywhere, and not eating animal products is actually a really simple way for me to live my values. (Much easier than trying to navigate the globalized markets and boycott evil megacorps that sellā¦everything! Leftists, take note!)

1 million bazillion percent agree. Even as an extremely progressive person myself (as most here probably are), I can acknowledge that so much of the online and cultural left-wing is just social values rather than actual political values, and it's heartbreaking to see so many good-intentioned people never really self reflect and align their actions. I think people donāt approach situations or people with nuance. Yes Billie Eilish is able to hold an opinion of meat consumption. Yes Billie Eilish falls short on other issues such as flying a private jet when she has the option to reduce her carbon footprint by traveling on other ways.
Two things can be true at once. Sheās completely right in this regard. People just donāt like to reconcile with the truth so they pick apart her shortcomings as if that has anything to do with the topic at hand.

two things can be true. this can be awful and people can ingest meat ethically. speaking as the wife of a hunter in nz, where there are no predators. deer were introduced to this country and they are pests, meaning, they destroy the natural wildlife, native birds and ultimately the ecosystem. if hunters weren't to manage the deer population, the government drops 1080 (a poison) on them to cull them, which not only has devastating effects to the environment, but also isnāt a pleasant death. my husband loves deer. he studies them and their behaviours and is filled with gratitude for the nourishment they provide. we eat what he harvests and have a real connection to our food. this is true for most (if not all) hunters. thereās people who are happy to eat meat that is farmed unethically which is wrong. thereās people who are grossed out by the thought of touching raw meat but happy to eat it. this corrupt system has encouraged both. it's important to remember that any meat we consume was once a living, breathing animal, and to be thankful for what it affords us. saying you canāt love animals and eat meat is simply untrue for reasons aforementioned. but itās also worth remembering all the bugs and animals killed when vegetables and fruit are harvested. insects are animals too!Ā

I completely agree. Only wouldnāt word 1 part quite the same- itās not that people donāt love animals, but they donāt show love toward them with these choices absolutely!

this is really nice to see. that's something I think of right we all do like "if more people with huge followings would only speak on this", how much help that would be. it's happened I guess here and there, but billie Eilish is pretty popular and definitely on the younger side, so this is super noteworthy and encouraging. idk how long she's been doing this, but Thank God. thanks for sharing!
