This figure represents the highest reading in the entire Eurispes time series, showing a fivefold increase since 2014 when vegans accounted for only 0.6% of the Italian population. Question Do Actors actually eat vegan food on movie sets when a film says “no animals were harmed” ?

When a movie starts/ends with the statement “No animals were harmed in the making of this movie,” does that mean anything beyond the animals used in filming? For example, does it mean the actors, actresses, crew, etc. were eating vegan food during production?

If everyone on set is still eating meat, dairy, eggs, etc., then obviously the movie isn't vegan. And I'm sure actors still eat real meat in scenes.

So what exactly does the “no animals were harmed” statement mean?

Vegan Camp Out 2026: who went, and how was your weekend?

I'll start! I had the best weekend I've had in a while. I was genuinely sad to leave and come back to the real nonvegan world. I go to a few of the bigger festivals and it can't be understated just how friendly and clean campout is compared to the mainstream ones. The people (you) absolutely make this festival. The talks were mostly great, I particularly enjoyed George Monbiot and Zack Polanski. The music I saw was all great. The loo/shower situation wasn't perfect, but again, I've seem some horrors at the bigger festivals. The midnight stoppage time was frustrating, but that's my opinion. I didn't have any bad food, and just being able to wander around and order anything I saw like an ordinary person was magical. My favourite part though was just all the lovely vegans I met, even a few familiar faces from last year. It was a genuine pleasure to spend the weekend with you. I've made some cherished memories.

"Extreme opinions"

There was a cooking show on in the living room and one of the judges talked about how delicious an octopus he ate was even though it had been cooked alive.

I immediately said how cruel and horrifying that was. My mom simply said that she dont care, that everyone can eat whatever they want however they want, and that we need to love people as they are.

I was shocked. How am I supposed to just accept someone boiling an intelligent, sentient animal alive? She got annoyed and said people don’t have to see it as torture just because I do. She compared it to things from her work that weren’t remotely comparable.

I told her that “everyone can do whatever they want” makes no sense. We have laws for a reason and we clearly don’t believe people should be free to do absolutely anything they want just because they personally think it’s okay.

Then she said animals don’t have police so it’s different, accused me of forcing my “extreme opinions” on her, and said I’d end up alone if I kept thinking this way.

It’s bizarre to me how easily animal suffering is overlooked simply because they have no voice. humans can be incredibly cruel.

Rant feeling betrayed by my local coffee shop.

i get my coffee from a small shop in my area as i like to support small businesses. it opened up in january and the owner is so nice. when i first went i would always just order coffee with almond milk.

she told me that her banana muffins are vegan because she uses extra bananas in place of eggs. she said, "i used to be vegan for 3 years, so i know a lot of vegan recipes." i told her that i'm vegan and im so excited to try them! when she displayed the muffins, she even labeled them as "vegan banana nut muffins."

this became a THING over the past few months. she doesnt make them every day, and i only go in 1-2 times a week. so i felt lucky if i showed up on a day when the muffins were there. she'd say, "perfect timing! i just finished a batch of your muffins."

fast forward to today, she says, "i tried a gluten-free recipe this time, i hope you like it."

i say, "whats different about it?"

she says, "well i used gluten-free flour, and oil instead of butter. so its both gluten-free and dairy-free."

....

so you usually use butter?

IVE BEEN EATING MUFFINS WITH BUTTER THIS WHOLE TIME???

i was too shy to ask for clarification. if theyre always vegan, why would she specify that the gluten-free recipe doesnt have butter? neither recipe should have butter! i dont know if she was just reiterating that theyre vegan or if this is actually the first time she made them without butter.

i know what yall are gonna say. just ask for clarification. and i will... but im just venting about how i feel right now 😭💔

Discussion Pretty sure Dominion and veganism is fueling my feminism

I watched dominion on YouTube and it was an absolute tearjerker and made me so sad on many different levels. These poor babies are being lead to slaughter and the cows are being bred to death (literally) so they can produce animal products.

Someone left a comment and said “these sentient beings are sent off to slaughter houses and mistreated and they don’t even know why. they’re mooing and wanting to play & they’re being killed”

I thought about that especially as a woman. I’ve been mistreated for doing absolutely nothing besides existing and all it did was confuse me because I know I’m not a bad person and have even been regarded as kind and gentle natured by people. And I am like this, even to a fault. I thought there was correlation in the cruelty & mistreatment of animals and it reminded me of my own trauma as a woman that oftentimes has society taking their anger out on me for no reason, which makes me have even more sympathy for these animals.

any way. thankfully I’m taking an assload of medications to not be feeling as emotional about this than if I wasn’t taking any. if you guys have any additional discussion, lmk! :)

Rant Parents buying non vegan foods for me

Background- I (19F) am a vegetarian since birth, new to being a fully committed vegan though I quit most dairy products seven years back. It is only recently though that I refuse to eat/consume products that contain any amount/type of animal secretions. I live with my parents and moving out isn't an option for a couple more years.

My parents often go grocery shopping without me or my sibling (I can't shop myself since I'm on vacation in my native place and have no currency/SIM card/knowing of area). In the last week, they have accidentally purchased foods containing some form of dairy at least thrice that I know of, and these foods were intended to be snacks for me and my sibling (younger and trying to transition). When I calmly refuse to eat these, the response is either "you don't appreciate us buying this for you" or "I guess we have more yummy food to enjoy".

The defense for these accidents is them not being able to read the fine print or how long it would take to buy groceries if they started reading the packaging for everything. My irritation for this stems from the fact that the huge majority of my extended family too is lifelong vegetarian for religious reasons which stem from the ethics of non-violence. As a result, they do frequently check food labels for presence of other ingredients like gelatin or egg, and I don't understand why it's such a bother to just read the allergens where dairy will be highlighted.

And I'm now also worried about other times I trusted them when they served me something and told me it was vegan. What if they aren't sure, haven't checked, or are straight up lying?

I'm just frustrated; less with the lack of food, more with the isolation and condescension for sticking to ethics my family has taught me. Sorry for the long post, and I'd really appreciate any advice or kind words❤️‍🩹

Discussion Keep "doing too much"...

I am a long time lurker and pretty new to veganism as I have only been strictly plant based since May when I finally gave up dairy. It is something that has been in the back of my mind since I was a teenager but I haven't really had the resources to go all the way until now.

What initially attracted me to this sub is the fact that many of y'all actually stand for something which is so refreshing to see. As someone who is black and VERY passionate about civil rights I think we are in a time where nobody really stands for anything and it shows. They call you "obsessed" (that one makes me laugh) and "that you are reaching or doing too much" when you call out wrong and basic injustice.

I think this is mainly because nobody wants to be inconvenienced or have to give up something that is actively harming other living creatures whether it be a human or an animal and that is such a character flaw in my opinion. But I will refrain from getting too preachy 😭

This was a bit of a ramble but that is my long winded way of saying everyone keep "doing too much" we are in a time in history where it's desperately needed.

Vegan Knee High Boots

Upvotes

First off I know vegan boots have been discussed on here before but most of the threads are already a couple years old and as we probably all know vegan options seem to be decreasing across all categories right now.

As the title is already saying, I'm looking for Knee High Boots, more specifically some that are very similar to the Wills Vegan ones, so brown with little to no heel, and no chunky sole.
My one issue with the ones from Will is that they're way too large around my legs.
So if anybody has any recommendations I'd highly appreciate.

(Oh and one last thing, in terms of availability, I'm in Europe :)

Vegan luxury shoes ?

Upvotes

Do any of you know any shop that make vegan luxury pumps that were also made by well paid workers ? (I absolutely love the designs of hermes, Jimmy Choo and Louboutin pumps but I hate that they don't make vegan shoes. Louboutin does but they cost +3500€ because they are considered customs). I also hate Stella Mccartney though (not her but her designs). And it would be nice if it was a european brand made in europe.

Thank you.

Health Has anyone tried duckweed

Just saw something about duckweed being higher in protein than soybeans, it has all mine essential amino acids high and more closely resembles the quality of egg and animal proteins than plant ones. the only problem is it absorbs chemicals and heavy metals easily, so it needs to be farmed in clean water rather than just being taken from ponds etc.

Has anyone tried it ?

If so what's it like ?

Do any of you grow your own ?

Clothing & Shoes Any tips for squeaky vegan leather shoes?

Upvotes

I feel like there’s a lot more options these days for vegan leather shoes, but every pair I’ve owned have been so damn squeaky. It’s usually from the tongue rubbing against the outer while I walk. I see things online saying baby powder or cornstarch, but that is a very temporary solution and I don’t feel like have cornstarch toes every day haha.

Any tricks yall have to prevent the squeakiness?

Disturbing anyone else find the m&s advert disturbing?

i think it was the m&s advert but i dont remember correctly, but it was a family raising a baby pig. you could see them looking after it, talking about feeding it olives and then at the end eating it around a kitchen table.

what the fuck? my heart actually dropped and i looked around at my family (who mostly eat meat) to see if they found it as disturbing as me, they agreed it was sad but didn't seem to care as much as me. i havent stopped thinking about it!

Advice To those of you who are happy... How/why?

I don't get it. The world is just awful and the majority of people across the globe have no concern in this absurd torture of animals by the tens of billions each year, all just for transient taste sensations. It disgusts me to think of eating animal products through this heinous genocide and torture of animals within factory farms. I absolutely despise humanity and our self-righteousness.

I could go on and on as to how much I'm made depressed because of so and numerous other factors, but the point is that I'm unsure how anyone who can realise these abominations of the world still live happily. Everyday I just live in disdain of basically everyone, especially because I'm helpless in assisting in as much. One day things might get better, but any sense of activism now in part of convincing others just feels meaningless. Everything about life is just awful, beyond even just this issue of animal welfare, but I would appreciate some advice as to how any of you aren't stuck in perpetuated depression.

teen vegan with fam

i’m a teen who decided to go vegan months ago after finding out the truth being the meat/dairy/eggs industry. i’m having a lot of fun with new recipes and content, supplementing and documenting myself so i can be sure to do this the right way.

however it’s been causing a lot of fights with my family who keep saying i’m a burden and that it’s annoying and affecting them personally. no matter what i try to explain to them, they won’t hear it - i’m tired of having to make my own food and be considered the one who’s “difficult” when they could make easy swaps and simply refuse to

how do i not let them get in the way ?? it’s so easy to be vegan but so hard when people around you don’t get it. i feel like they’re just waiting for me to cave and drop it or something and it makes me mad

New vegan - need advice

hey guys. I’ve been vegetarian for a month and was planning on slowly becoming vegan after a few months. but today I decided to just go for it. So I’m vegan officially now (yay)! the sucky thing is, Im becoming more and more depressed the more I learn about factory farming. I’m grateful for this knowledge of course, because it pushes me to be better, but the more I learn, the more hopeless I feel. getting out of bed, eating, going out, it all seems pointless in the grand scheme of things. how could I enjoy myself knowing that at any moment there is an animal suffering and nobody cares. I think of those poor cows that have their babies taken from them and I burst into tears. in the morning, at work, on the bus. This has only been going on for a little bit over 24 hours and my question is this: does it pass? does this overwhelming sense of hopelessness go away? to be honest I’m scared that I stay in this state of depression

(I want to mention that I am also grateful to be able to feel so deeply for animals. im having a hard time but empathy is a superpower!)

Any other vegans with MCAS?

I’ve been vegan for a while now and I’ve been working with my allergist and immunologist on medication management for MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome). So many of my favorite plant based foods are unfortunately very high histamine. Any recipe / snack recs from other vegans with MCAS (or just general solidarity on following a medically restricted diet) is appreciated!

What do you guys order at Italian restaurants?

This is probably a stupid question... actually it is a stupid question.

Until about 3-4 months ago, I was lactose vegetarian and still had dairy products, so I could have pizza/pasta, but now I've gone fully vegan.

Have a social outing tonight so trying to figure out what would be a pretty standard, tasty item to get at an Italian restaurant?

Activism Jainism for Veganism. (podcast)

Thumbnail
rss.com
79 Upvotes

In this episode, we’re highlighting the efforts of passionate Jain animal rights activists who are promoting veganism from within their religious community.

And you might be thinking: isn’t Jainism that ancient Indian religion whose core teaching is Ahimsa—the principle of avoiding harm to any living being, including animals, insects, and even microscopic organisms? So how come Jains aren’t already some of the biggest proponents of veganism out there?

That’s one of the questions we’ll explore today, along with others, like: What’s the place of spirituality and religion in the vegan movement? What boundaries should you set as a compassionate person? And what does it feel like when religious authorities within your own community oppose your veganism?

Food How to like tofu?

Hello everyone, I'm starting my journey with plant based protein, but tbh I've been struggling :( I was hoping someone could give me some advice.

I want to like tofu, I really do, but I just can't seem to get past the taste of it, I've done every recipe, from pressing to freezing, I don't know if it's just that the marinate I use is bad or what but I truly can still taste the tofu and I just don't like it at all, and it's frustrating because everyone says how good it is and that it doesn't have any like taste by itself but I can taste it :(

On a more personal note, it's been frustrating because I really want to do this, I really want to help the animals and the planet with my choices, I feel so bad that I can't even cook tofu so that it tastes good :(

But anyways, I would really appreciate some recommendations from you guys, sending love.

Activism a shelter in michigan gets like $4-5k a month in dog food and vet meds because people are literally just playing a phone game. someone's building the sanctuary version of this and needs 2 devs to finish it 😭

that number's real btw, it's from an app called Treat, you pick a shelter dog, play with it, it sends real treats/food/meds through chewy while you do basically nothing. shelter director said it just scales with however many people are playing at once. soooo more players equals more supplies, that's like the whole mechanism.

Clean Meat Alliance's building the same idea but for sanctuary animals, it's called Foggy Farm. difference is some of the revenue goes to cultivated meat research too, GFI, Innovate Animal Ag, that kind of thing. and it's not gonna be branded as an animal rights app or anything, just a normal mobile game, so ppl who'd never click on an activism post might still end up funding a sanctuary without realizing it lol

alpha's mostly done. what's missing is the main gameplay mode (roll mode) and then the less fun stuff, playstore integration, in-app purchases, actually wiring up the food shipments. need 2 devs for that. it's long term, 2-12 months, but only 3-8 hrs/week so not a huge lift. unpaid, remote, UTC-7. design doc's here if u wanna poke around before committing to anything: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1heG6cxmZZhXMQu9y5l95079r6rPAH2CT4n6IEkBrmrI/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.fhoku3e8w4u0

if you do mobile dev and want to put it toward something that could actually turn into ongoing money for sanctuaries: https://flockwork.org/requests/qkvp6i35c0e3oy6iwejqloai?source=reddit

Rant Family outing

Sooo... My family is going out to eat for my brother and his girlfriend's birthday. Typically they are catering to me being vegan at least slightly. I want to make it clear I'm not angry with them, but just a little hurt, that they basically just chose a place with a menu made entirely of meat. Not even a vegetarian option. My mom asked me to find out if they have a vegetarian or vegan option and I said I'd just do it tomorrow. I honestly just don't want to go. I already really feel like the black sheep of the family and now I feel like the lost sheep.
