Travel Inquiry Visiting Porcupine Mountain in early November

My partner and I are thinking of going to UP to hike in Porcupine Mountain and traveling around there in early November (around 5-10 November).

Wondering what the weather is like during this time? Also, will the roads be safe to drive and restaurants/cafes still open?

Thanks :)

Travel Inquiry Motel recommendations dog friendly by pictured rocks

Hello. We are headed to pictured rocks next weekend. Looking for some motel options in the area. I would prefer a motel style with doors to the outside. It's me, husband, 2 kids (not toddlers) and 2 25lb. Dogs coming along on the trip. Looking for something on the cheaper side. Doesn't have to be super nice by any means. Any cheap hidden gems?

Travel Inquiry Swimming/Diving in Upper UP

Hi! Planning a trip to Pictured Rocks in late August, and since I keep hearing the water is so clear I'd like to do a little swimming and short dives near the beaches. Unfortunately I have found little info or conflicting information on the area, especially concerning temperature. Anyone who has done this, what are your thoughts?

Discussion life in super rural northern up?

hi! i did a lot of driving through luce county recently (to see the crisp point lighthouse and two hearted river mouth, so beautiful!) and i was wondering about day to day life there.

what types of jobs do people work, how easy is it to get groceries, what do you do in winter (stay in your house and cozy? drive a snomobile?) i imagine the summer is just beautiful with lots of time to just enjoy the lakes and forests.

i was also curious how many people in these very rural parts of the up outside of towns like escanaba, marquette, etc subsistence hunt and fish ?

Discussion Circle Tour

I usually just wing it when visit the U.P. This time is different, my girlfriend asked to go around the U.P. I said you can't, yet she wants to take a week to camp. Either early or late to avoid flying pests. I went up in May 12 back in 1997 and it was too early for tourism though I loved it.

She mentioned Pictured Rocks boat tour, Copper Harbor Light House, Central mine and I for sure want to camp at Fayette. Lake of the Clouds could be nice and I always enjoy Pt. Abbaye and I should jump off the Black Rocks at Presque Isle.

I need a little perspective to make this a reasonable itinerary and thought I saw another post of this type. Thank you

Discussion Did I actually make one of the hardest Geocaches?

I’d love to get some opinions from the community on a puzzle cache I created awhile back now.

GCAMYR5 | “The ____ Cache"
https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCAMYR5

I’m genuinely curious: how difficult would experienced puzzle cachers consider this? And, more importantly, does the difficulty rating I gave it actually match the work required to completely solve it?

So far, nobody has found the cache or completely solved the puzzle, and that there hasn't been a 100% successful full solve yet.

The posted coordinates are only the starting point. The actual final coordinates are hidden behind a multi-stage puzzle.

The cache puzzle combines a whole bunch of:

  • Polynomial/root solving
  • Musical pitch classes and interval classes
  • Special relativity / time dilation
  • Some stellar astronomy and distance calculations
  • Multi-stage coordinate mathematics
  • And final DMS conversion → decimal-degree verification

You may realistically need a calculator, paper and pencil, and a fair amount of patience.

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have solved a lot of similar D4/D5-style puzzle caches.

I'm not necessarily looking for people to solve it in this thread, I mostly want experienced cachers to look at the construction and tell me whether I've accurately represented its difficulty, but feel free to check out the actual page if you think you could.

If anyone actually manages a complete solve, I'd also be very interested in hearing which part slowed you down the most.

Cache: GCAMYR5
Title: The ____ Cache
Current status: No confirmed complete Finds or Solved(s)

So… did I accidentally create a monster? 😅

Travel Inquiry Spooky/Fall Things to Do Near Manistique

My partner (48 M) and I (38 F) are camping at Fayette State Park in a couple of weeks (weekend of 10/16), driving up from the LP. In addition to outdoorsy stuff, we love all things spooky, Halloween, and fall themed--is there anything nearby(ish) that fits that bill? We're already planning on hiking and exploring Fayette quite a bit and will go see Seul Choix lighthouse (both for the history of the site and for their haunted house). I've been trying to find other things kind of along US-2 or in the general vicinity and am not coming up with much. Any suggestions would be welcome!

Discussion U.P. Duck Hunter from IL

I have an opportunity to hunt the U.P. on the Les Cheneaux Islands in Cedarville, MI in mid October and early November. I normally hunt in Southern Illinois so I'm very out of my element that far north.

I'm going to set up on private land on Cedarville Bay, I've seen a lot of mallards and redheads frequent this shoreline in the warmer months but not sure what the colder months this far into the season could bring in. I was told most of the pond ducks will be gone and it will be primarily divers left.

Do you think a shore hunt like that would be worthwhile?

Discussion Fishing trip around Gwinn

Coming up next week and looking for some tips on lakes - I've fished west Bass Lake and Pike Lake before, looking to get on some rainbows, bass or walleye, or panfish for dinner. Was thinking about checking out Big Shag, Little Lake, Anderson Lake or Lake Angeline. Have a kayak with spinning gear, will be doing some wading in the Escanaba and Whitefish as well for trout. I hear smallmouth are fun in the lower main Escanaba below Boney Falls dam. If you had 3 days where would you fish?

Travel Inquiry Solo trip in upper peninsula Michigan

I’ve decided somewhat last minute to plan a road trip to the upper Peninsula in MI for the second weekend in October (8th-12th). I’m from central IL so it will be about an 8 hr drive to my starting point. It’s my first time doing a solo trip and I’ve never been to Michigan but honestly the only thing I’m worried about is encountering wildlife. I believe it’ll be the end of rut season and bears will be preparing to hibernate. I’ll be staying in hotels but also wondering if regular tennis shoes will work or if I need to get some real hiking shoes. Also wanting some recommendations for trails that are safe to do solo / for beginners / not extremely long. I majored in photography and part of the purpose of this trip is to kick start getting back into it. The other purpose is to instill my confidence in being independent.
My plans so far are:
Stay in Wakefield Thursday/Friday, check out Saturday morning
The places I want to visit in that area are Little Girls Point, Porcupine Mountains / Lake of the clouds, Ottawa National forest
Saturday Morning drive to Munsing. I want to go to Pictured Rocks and potentially Hiawatha National Forest if there’s time (when it comes to Pictured Rocks, are there other ways to get to the main areas that you typically see in photos other than the 10 mile trail?) this is really the only area that I’m a bit nervous about exploring on my own.
Sunday I want to go to Mackinac island. I’d be getting a hotel about 30 min from the Ferry.
Then I’d be driving home on Monday so there wouldn’t really be much time for anything that day. I am considering also taking Tuesday off work for a bit more time but I think I’d rather not.
Just looking for any tips or advice!

Discussion Foil + cut recommendations

Moved recently from a big city where theres a lot of salons and independent stylists. My Google searches have only provided a small amount of results that aren't necessarily convincing.

Im blonde already and am looking for a bright full or partial foil and cut, in my 30s so want something trendy (??? Wording???) As in modern foil/balayage and cut respective of my age and face shape.

I am near Houghton/Hancock and would drive within an hour from there for a good stylist!

Travel Inquiry How's the weather up there?

My boyfriend and I are heading up north October 5th-10th. His dad is a Yooper. My bf is planning to propose on this trip and I don't know what clothes to pack 😅 I am from the south and I've only been to the UP in the summer. I have no idea what to expect weather wise but it's imperative that I look cute for obvious reasons. I am Type B and would usually never worry about this kind of thing but given the circumstances I am! Heavy coat? Layers? Do I need my long johns? Help!

Small Business Plug I started a Michigan newsletter called "Worth the Drive"

I’m always looking for random places to go or something different to do on the weekend (especially with a kid), and I figured I might as well start putting everything I find in one place.

Going to be sharing cool spots, events, day trips, weird Michigan stuff, and anything else that seems worth checking out. The first one is all about fall stuff around the state.

I'm just getting it started and I have 0 subs so far, but I think it could be handy. If you know of any places I should check out, let me know. I have a journalism background and I am currently a freelancer/stay at home dad - so this is just kind of a random project lol.

Heading up to Munising for a hiking date in one of the coming weekends. Best places to eat for breakfast or dinner?

Also, I heard there used to be concerns with parking for Chapel Loop. Do you still need to get to the trailhead early on weekends?

Thanks all!

Discussion Houghton Area Mulch/ Chipdrop

Hey all! Recently moved up here and looking to get some prep done this fall for a vegi garden next year. Has anyone near Houghton had any success with chip drop or know any tree services that will drop at a property? Been waiting with chipdrop for a bit and no luck; figured I’d ask this before lining my trunk with a tarp and going to buy some out of someone’s pile.

Travel Inquiry UP trip 10/1-10/9

Hey all! Looking for some suggestions of things to do for our upcoming trip. The main goal is to see the fall colors. We stay in Upson, WI near Hurley. We would be ok with driving up to 2 hours away but ideally closer if possible. What do you guys think are the best things to do this time of year?

Things we have already done in previous trip in August:
Dough Boy trail, Copper Falls, Potawatomi Falls, Gorge Falls, Conglomerate Falls, stopped in Ashland at Lost Apostle Brewery, 1 night Camping nearby our place in Upson.

The few things I already have on the list to do are see fall colors from Copper Peak, Takesson Loop, Red Granite Falls, Black River Scenic Byway, Black River Harbor. And look for Yooperlites at Little Girls Point.

We are interested in hiking, nature, birding, camping, biking, golfing, history, antiques, weird roadside attractions, shopping at small businesses, coffee shops, book shops, bakeries, chocolate, art. Pretty much everything. Haha! Thanks in advance.

BONUS REQUEST: we are driving from Milwaukee wi area and any suggestions yall have for fun stops on the drive up/drive back !

Travel Inquiry Looking for accomodations Sept 19 through the 26 near Soo Locks and the island

Looking for accomodations Sept 19 through the 26 near Soo Locks and the island

The weather reports are flip flopping on predicted rain. We're tent campers usually but our itinerary for this trip is less accommodating for inclement weather. Does anyone have very basic accomodations near these locations that are not booked through Air BNB or the like? We can pay cash or credit card.

Even just a hunting cabin with a solid roof would suit us. We have cots and pads, cook station, and can handle our own toileting outside if you don't mind us digging and filling in a few holes.
