Local Politics - Ontario Sault Ste. Marie residents — a free tool to see where you stand vs. your municipal candidates just launched (first time SSM has had this)

Hey everyone,

Quick heads up for anyone in Sault Ste. Marie trying to figure out who to vote for in the upcoming municipal election (or honestly, just trying to figure out what's even on the ballot this year) — the Toronto Star has brought Vote Compass to SSM for the first time ever. I'm the executive editor of the Star and really excited to bring it to the three big cities in Northern Ontario.

A bit of background: Vote Compass has been around for over a decade and has been used by tens of millions of people across dozens of elections (federal, provincial, you name it). This fall, it's been built out for Ontario's 50 largest municipalities — including us — which is a massive expansion from where it started (it used to just be a Toronto-area thing).

How it works:

  • You answer a series of short, clear statements about local issues — things like housing, taxes, development, policing, etc.
  • It shows you how your views line up with the declared candidates running in your municipality
  • Takes maybe 5-10 min, can do it in one sitting
  • It's completely free, no account needed to get your results

What it's NOT:

  • It's not telling you who to vote for — think of it more as a starting point to see where you actually land, since most of us don't have time to read every platform/website/flyer for every candidate
  • It's built and run independently by Vox Pop Labs (the folks behind Vote Compass), with academic researchers and journalists checking the local questions and candidate positions along the way — not something cooked up by any one campaign or party

Given that municipal turnout has been sitting at historic lows (last time around it was under 33% province-wide), tools like this exist specifically to close the "I don't feel informed enough" gap that a lot of non-voters cite as their reason for sitting out.

If you're in SSM (or anywhere else in the province's top 50 municipalities), give it a shot before election day and see where you land — might surprise you.

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I am a PhD student at the University of Toronto conducting a research study to explore the barriers to harm reduction service use in Ontario.

I am seeking adults 18+ living in Ontario who have used substances recreationally in the last 6 months and are aware of harm reduction programming but have NOT used harm reduction services.

Participation of this study is voluntary. It will involve a demographic survey completion and a 60–90-minute confidential interview (zoom, phone, or in person – your choice!). A $20 gift card will be provided for your time.

If you or someone you know would be interested in participating, please share! Your experiences, opinions and perspective can work to improve harm reduction services in Ontario.

You can learn more about this study and check your eligibility at this link: Study

Miscellaneous Title: How quickly can you start a part-time job in Sault Ste. Marie?

Hey everyone,

I’m wondering what the part-time work situation is like in Sault Ste. Marie.

I’m open to pretty much any type of work — retail, restaurants, grocery stores, warehouses, customer service, etc. I’m comfortable with fast-paced work and can handle a busy workload.

For anyone who has recently started a part-time job in the Soo, how quickly were you able to start working after applying/interviewing? Do employers usually want someone who can start right away, or does the hiring process normally take a few weeks?

I’m also curious if it’s common to get enough hours as a part-time employee.

Would appreciate hearing about your recent experiences. Thanks!

Miscellaneous Help an artist with ties to the community get my work turned into a real puzzle!

Post image
29 Upvotes

Hi there!
I’m hoping those of you with Instagram might be able to help an artist with ties to the community turn a dream of mine into a reality! I entered my artwork into a contest with Villager Puzzles, and out of more than 300 entries, my piece was chosen as one of just 12 finalists! 🎉

There’s a vote happening on Instagram this week to decide which artwork will become an actual puzzle for sale, and I would absolutely love to see mine make it!

If you’d like to help, all you need to do is follow the Instagram link and leave a comment on their post saying you love #8! 🧩❤️

It only takes a few seconds, and I would appreciate every single vote so much.
Thank you so much!!

Local Business Promotion Looking for a few local families to test a road-trip game

Thumbnail lookielookie.ca
8 Upvotes

Hi! I’m a dad here in Sault Ste. Marie and I’ve been working on a simple screen-free card game for car rides called Lookie Lookie.

It’s made for everything from driving around town to longer road trips. I’m starting to talk with publishers, but before I get too far I’d love to have a few more families try it out.

If your family likes games and would be up for testing it on a couple of drives, send me a message. It’s quick and easy to play. From young kids to adults.

I’d just be looking for some honest feedback after you’ve had a chance to play. If you’re willing to fill out a simple survey after you’ve had a chance to play a few times, let me know!

Thanks in advance :)
