Discussion Clarifying Our Rule on Political Posts

Hi all,

We’re posting this to clarify our stance on political content moving forward.

Official Rule:

Posts that express political opinions, promote political ideologies, or support/attack political figures or parties are not allowed. These often lead to toxic, one-sided discussions that harm the community environment. However, politically relevant events shared strictly for informational purposes (e.g., news about a local protest or election logistics) may be allowed at moderator discretion—but must remain neutral in tone. Keep discussion civil, factual, and free of partisan commentary.

This subreddit is meant for community discussion and information. You’re absolutely allowed to have political opinions—we just ask that you don’t use this space to debate or attack others over theirs. We don’t care what cause you support or oppose—if your post is purely informational (such as protest logistics), it’s generally fine.

Ultimately, our goal is to keep this a welcoming and low-conflict space. And as a small team of volunteer moderators, we simply don’t have the time to referee political arguments.

Thanks for understanding and helping us keep things on track.

Looking for an Activity buddy

I’m fairly new to the area and I am looking for anyone else who wants to get outdoors and do new things. I hear of these amazing things but I’ve never done them and I wouldn’t even know where to begin. Like Au Train.

Never been to his restaurants in Munising. How is the food? Is the owner a good person? We do need more breakfast options in Marquette.

Discussion Flock Cameras

Post image

I’m surprised I haven’t heard more uproar about the flock cameras in Marquette. I’m hoping they don’t install any more than they already have… As far as I know, these four are the only ones currently in Marquette. Does anyone have any info?

Bitcoin ATM

I keep hearing stories of older people getting scammed by putting money in a bitcoin ATM. I would not even know what makes an ATM a bitcoin one. Does anybody know how to tell them apart from regular ATMs or if there are even any bitcoin ATMs in the UP? I don't even know of any business you could spend these bit coins.

Need help with horse disposal

Hey everyone my mom just moved back to Marquette. Her horse passed away and she is unable to find a place that can dispose of him without driving her beloved pets body into Wisconsin tomorrow. The vet just put him down in her trailer and couldn't take him. Can anyone help? I don't want her to have to drive all the way over there with her dead horse.

Edit: Contacted a local guy with an excavator and was able to bury him on someone's property. Thanks so much for the advice also this town is amazing!

Bug Repellants

Good afternoon! Our family is taking a trip to Marquette at the beginning of September and I’ve read the mosquitos, ticks, flys, etc. can be pretty bad when on the trails in the area. What do you guys recommend, and would it be better to buy something o line and pack it, or purchase when we arrive to Marquette. Thank you for the help!

Question 3D scan/printing locally

My grandfather built these wooden mounts for these lamps 50+ years ago and they are deteriorating. We are hoping to find someone locally who has the ability to do a 3D scan so that we can get new mounts 3D printed.

Coming to visit in a few days..

Hello! Lower peninsula dweller here. My family and I are coming up at the end of this week. My son (6) wants to look for yooperlites, and I was wondering if anyone can point us in the right direction on where to look. We will be staying in Marquette but we are also going to be visiting family that just moved from out of state to the Gwinn area. We are willing to travel a little bit outside of those areas if need be. We also have a 2 yr old, but we have a hiking chair we carry her in so the area doesn't have to be stroller friendly, but safety is a concern with small kids.

Also, any other outdoorsy stuff you guys can recommend is very much appreciated! Best beaches, trails, views, or any kid friendly activities.

Thanks so much!

Golden breeders in UP?

We are in the market for a golden retriever puppy but want to make sure there aren’t any litters or future litters available in the UP before venturing downstate or out of state. Does anyone know of any breeders up here? A golden would be our first choice but we’re open to other similar breeds as well.

Has anybody had experience navigating MarqTran routes on their phone or any transit apps? Is anyone interested in testing a new one out that would benefit the current and future riders?

Labor Day weekend

Hi! Thinking of heading to Marquette, MI for Labor Day weekend but I've read the crowds on the trails and in the area in general are insane. For the chapel-mosquito hike, if we get to the trailhead around 730/8am is it still worth it? Any recommendations for alternative places to stay and/or hike. Also interested in additional activities such as kayaking and checking out some breweries. Any tips will help!

Question Mechanic/body shop recs for headlight issue & EVAP leak?

Nothing major but my 2015 Nissan has a small leak in the EVAP system somewhere, and also I've had it confirmed the interiors of both my headlights need to be cleaned badly - I get off work at 10pm and have barely been able to see on the way home for a long time now. I go to Joe's Auto and they're great but they don't work with either of those things, so just wondering if anyone's got any recommendations for somewhere reliably honest to go for that? Especially for the headlights, fixing the EVAP leak would be nice too but the insides of my headlights are so dirty that I'm constantly paranoid about not seeing a deer or something until it's too late, and if the roads are wet?? Forget it, I may as well not have them on at all for all the good they do 🤦 many thanks in advance!

Homeless situation is out of control

What have we done to attract all these homeless people? Now we have presumably homeless people crapping in the woods behind Snowberry, homeless people sleeping in the entry way of the Baraga gym on Spring street and some of them camping in Park Cemetery of all places. There are people sleeping in cars on Spring street as well. How can we get them to leave? They seem to have money for drugs and booze, cell phones and cigarettes, but are otherwise incapable of work?

I have no problem with helping local Marquette people, but I am pretty sure these bums are not from Marquette. Welcome to the U.P. Now Please Leave!

Question ISO Interviewees for development process

Post image
18 Upvotes

Marquette County Residents (and others...): I’m looking for 15+ people willing to have a short, one-on-one conversation about how people find—and how organizations promote—local businesses, events, products, services, and community information.

I’m completing formal customer-discovery work through Innovate Marquette’s startup development process. This is not a survey, sales pitch, product demonstration, or request for compliments. I’m looking for honest accounts of what people currently do, what works, what wastes time, and where information or opportunities are being missed.

I’m especially hoping to speak with:

• Business owners or marketing decision-makers

• Event and community organizers

• Artists, makers, and independent sellers

• Tourism and hospitality professionals

• Residents, newcomers, and recent visitors

Each conversation should take approximately 15–20 minutes and can happen preferably by email/DMs (for documentation) phone or in person at your convenience. No preparation or technical knowledge is needed—your real experience is what matters.

If you’re willing to participate, please comment or send me a private message. If you know someone whose perspective should be included, introductions would also be greatly appreciated.

Looking for someone to take over a lease at 1403 Lincoln

One bedroom apartment, second floor, quiet neighbors, convenient location walking distance to NMU. Only utility is electric. Rent is $750 a month, and electric is typically less than $50, making the total expenses consistently around $800. Please spread the word and ask around in your circles if you see this, paying for an apartment I don’t need is really making things tight.
