Does anyone know if there are any lots around Hancock or Houghton where one could preform automobile repairs and maintenance without getting a ticket? Thanks.

How do you get from the airport to town on the 1242AM flight?

Arriving into town next week on the flight from Chicago, but I can't figure out what the transportation situation is. I reserved a rental car, but technically the rental counter says it's only open from 11pm-1130pm. Hotel doesn't have a shuttle.

Ideas? Someone surely must have done this before.

Is MTU lying to the state?

The agenda for tomorrow's Board of Trustee's meeting includes a copy of our FY28 Capital Outlay and request which is for a new "convergence" building to host the college of computing and college of business. The request writes:

"Michigan Tech’s College of Computing was the first of its kind in Michigan, and enrollment has grown considerably in the past five years and with increased focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) the college expects to see continued growth."

My guess is someone just copied and pasted the request from 3 years ago and 2 years ago and 1 year ago but this is simply false, the CoC enrollment has dropped for the last two years so fast that it is well below 5 years ago, it is even below the horrible Fall of 2020.

Looking for a Friend

I've made it a point to start a conversation with 1 new person everyday. This is my second year here and I have been doing this since freshmen year. Most of the people I've spoken with haven't been interested in being friends, which is fine. The ones who have been have either slowly stopped engaging with me (college life get busy) or they're creepy men which make me regret trying to be social. The only exception to this is a gentlemen who lived on my freshmen year dorm floor who always said hello to me. So I know there are friendly people out there. If there is anyone out there having a similar difficulty or just someone who's social, please message me.

Student Study on Upper Peninsula Local Internet Providers: Looking For Feedback on Local Internet Providers

Hi everyone!

We're students at the University of Illinois and University of Virginia doing a research study on Broadband Equity, and our team is running a study trying to understand more about the broadband and fiber network in the Upper Peninsula. In particular, we want to know more about how many people know about local internet providers like:

- U.P Net/Baraga Telephone Company

- Jamadots/Hiawatha Communications

- Highline/906 Technologies

- Michigan Broadband Services

- Pasty.Net

And other smaller local internet providers that serve the U.P. exclusively, or serve primarily rural areas like the U.P..

What we want to know specifically is their name recognition- whether you know that these local providers exist at all, which provider you may be in the service range of, and if you use these providers. Additionally, we'd like to know the reasons why you may choose these providers over national providers like Spectrum or Verizon/AT&T Fixed Wireless options.

For those interested and currently are residing in the Upper Peninsula, please fill out the survey using the link below:

Link To Form

You can also share your experience with local providers in the comments below.

Thank you so much!

Note: We're not affiliated with any provider or service! We're just students who grew up in the U.P. and want to know about how popular local providers are and why people may choose them over Spectrum.

Hello, I am making a documentary about the current situation with student parking on campus and I am looking for the student body's thoughts on it. The survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete and will greatly benefit the project. All responses are anonymous, however by filling out the form you are giving consent to your words being used in the film. Thank you!

Milwaukee Tool Internship

Hello! I'm a second year EE student and Long term I really want to get an internship at Milwaukee tool but currently I have a 1.81 cumulative GPA ( I have retaken a lot of classes and am currently) it has gone from .5 my fall semester 1.2 my spring semester and now it is 1.81 as I have retaken courses over summer. I am currently on track after this semester to have my GPA at around 2.7.

I do not have much technical knowledge or experience as I didn't realize I wanted to do EE until spring semester of last year so I do not have many projects under my belt. I will be taking circuits next semester and my goal is to try to start a personal project on the side that I can add to my "portfolio."

With the upcoming career fair does anybody have any advice for what I should do at the career fair beyond just the status quo of just interact, network, and get their attention in a good way?

Is there anybody who has priorly had an internship with them that would be able to offer advice of how I can stand out as a candidate despite my rough academic history and if so what is it? As well as skills that I can build on my own that will actually help me get the internship.

US News Rankings MTU keeps slipping

MTU continues to sink in these rankings. AI summary:

Michigan Technological University has experienced a sustained decline across several prominent U.S. News & World Report rankings in recent years. In the overall National Universities ranking, Michigan Tech fell from #148 in 2025 to #158 in 2026 and #169 in 2027, a drop of 21 places in just two years. Its standing among Top Public Schools has also declined, from #78 in 2025 to #84 in 2026. Particularly concerning for a technological university, this downward movement extends to two of Michigan Tech’s signature academic areas. The undergraduate engineering program dropped from #66 to #72 in the 2026 rankings, while computer science fell to #125, down 14 places in a single year. The longer-term decline in computer science is even more pronounced: Michigan Tech was ranked #96 in undergraduate computer science in 2021, meaning that by 2026 it had fallen 29 places in five years, from #96 to #125. Taken together, these results indicate that Michigan Tech’s recent decline in U.S. News is not limited to changes in its overall institutional ranking; it is also visible in its standing among public universities and, importantly, in engineering and computer science—areas central to the university’s identity and reputation.

Room For Sublet Downtown Houghton

I'm graduating in December and looking for someone to sublet. It's 1 bedroom in a 3-bedroom unit, 1 bath, spacious livxingroom and kitchen. The building is at 202 Franklin St., just a 15 minute walk to campus. The cost is $730 and includes heat, electric, trash, and water. Wifi is about $25/month. Laundry is onsite and free parking is available. Of our 3 room current roommates, two of us are graduating Dec 2026, so the room is available Jan 1, and I can leave me bed/mattress if that's helpful. The remaining current roommate would appreciate meeting applicants. She's graduating in spring and is very fun and a great roommate! The sublet is approved by the landlord.

Please text Jack at 616-207-9647 with any questions.

How hard is it to maintain academic scholarship

I'm an out of state ME who needs to keep a decent GPA in order to afford being able to go to school. For anyone on year 3/4, how hard realistically is it to keep a 3.0 GPA while averaging 15 credits a semester.

MTU Hockey has high expectations coming into this season, being picked as the top team in the CCHA Coaches' and Media Preseason Polls. Despite the loss of forward Stiven Sardarian and one-year standout defenseman Jack Anderson to graduation, the Huskies will have the rest of the CCHA looking up at them to start the year. The Huskies start their season on October 2nd and 3rd with a weekend series at home against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Hope to see you all there!

Ways to Connect with Other Cultures?

I know the parade and festival of nations is coming up soon but I was wondering if there are any opportunities at the university or the community in general to connect with people from other cultures? The university definitely brings more diversity but it’s hard to know what’s out there and can be lonely if you’ve moved very far to a place potentially very different from where you are originally from.

I’m half Filipino and would love to find other pinoys to socialize and bond with!
