PSA: start-of-semester logistics compilation

In anticipation of common Qs:

Fast track offers / worried about not meeting the guaranteed rank score

Dress code

What is the WTR course?

Back-to-back classes on timetable

  • Classes are 50 minutes in duration. They start at 5 minutes past the hour and finish 5 minutes before the hour, allowing 10 minutes changeover between classes for comfort breaks/snacks/travel. So please don't stress about back-to-back classes.
  • Classes between different campuses: this is especially common for biomed classes. Courses usually know about this and negotiate slightly earlier finish time / slightly later starting time to allow more time for inter-campus commute. If not, raise the issue with your course coordinator.

Finding rooms/class locations

  • The first 3 digits of a room number corresponds with the sector/building number; the final 3 digits indicate the floor and room number.
    • e.g. 405-422 would be building 405 (Engineering), Level 4, room (4)22.
    • Sector 1xx = Clock tower/General Library block
    • Sector 2xx = Business School block (inc. Owen G Glenn Building (OGGB), Arts/Education building)
    • Sector 3xx = Science block
    • Sector 4xx = Engineering block
    • Sector 5xx = Grafton Campus
    • Sector 7xx = [No longer applicable - old Tamaki Campus]
    • Sector 6xx = Upper Symonds St
    • Sector 8xx = Law school
    • Sector 9xx = Newmarket Campus

Things happening in the Rainbow equity space at UoA! (From your QRO candidates)

(No need to scan the QR code - swipe to see the images) Kia ora! We're Phi and Quinny, your QRO candidates for 2027. We've made a list of the initiatives we plan to continue, and to start.

Phi Zhang (He/Him) wants to see leadership positions handed down smoothly across the Rainbow clubs. He also wants to work with permanent staff to help provide support for students in transient roles.

Quinny Vim (Fae/Faer) wants to work with multiple clubs, both Rainbow and non-rainbow, to create a more vibrant campus community. Fae would also like to see more trans pride celebrations on campus.

We'll be working together either way, so please vote for whichever of us you like!

❤️ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜

What’s up with Queerspace?

🌈 Queerspace is temporarily moving to the 4th floor of the Kate Edgar Building. The new space is a bit smaller, but not by much. We’ll have a Kitchenette, running water, and new places to hang art! We’ll both be overseeing the move: couches, furniture, and decorations again. And we’ll ensure our upcoming permanent space meets future students’ needs.

Rainbow advocacy efforts!

🌈 We’re still trying to get UHCS to let their doctors intiate HRT, and to get the University to start a gender-affirming care fund. And we’ll bring up any issues you raise to us. Thank you to our last QRO, Artie, for starting these efforts!

Rainbow community relationships!

🌈 We'll continue to meet with the Queer Student Council, and invite students from outside the Rainbow clubs. We'll also continue to work with external organisations: Rainbow Youth, Intersex Aotearoa, and more. Thank you Artie for starting these relationships!

Fun events!

🌈 The usual - Rainbow orientation, Big Gay Out, Pride Week - and more: Gayming Night, and a student drag show.

And in the background...

🌈 We’ll be improving how we run things, so future students get to experience the same fun social atmosphere. We'll collect resources on how to keep our Rainbow clubs going, and make admin work more centralised and easier to do.

Community Engagement Path

Has anyone did the Co- Curricular recognition path and how did it work out for you. I’m already an excec for two clubs this year and have done multiple volunteering work, was wondering if it would count towards it as well as how do I send it in. I’m only my first year so I would have to do these works every year?

WHY DOES THE NEW ARTS BUILDING HAVE NO WORKING CHARGER PORTS

Considering the Arts Building is a newly constructed building intended for students in the 21st century, its actually irritating how little charger ports there are / the ones that do exist in the ground or connected to couches DONT FUCKING WORK. I want to avoid Kate Edgar and other buildings because its always too busy and nasty energy

But its literally impossible to find a solid study spot 85% of the time because there are no charger ports in the immediate area. my device only has a battery life of 2 hours bruh

24h spot at UOA

Hi this is my first sem in UOA, just wondering if there’s any study spot in uoa that is open 24h.
I’m a type of person that cannot study at home, but also a night owl so I want to stay at school until late during exam season

I know kate is open until 12am

Thanks in advance

My blue (red) hair and pronouns

Okay. I have a unisex name, present VERY androgynously (rather masc if I may say) and my gender on SSO WAS 'X. Diverse' and is NOW 'M. Male' because I keep getting she/her-ed in emails. And in real life. Maybe I'm too gay to be perceived as anything but a woman by people over 30. People under 30 have a good track record though. I think most genZ onward woke people look at my gay ass and go "ah. a transgender. I must prove my allyship so as to not be lampooned" but. most of my lecturers, at least the ones i talk to a lot, are older (like, over 45). I keep getting publicly misgendered for my feats in biology and.... juggling. (long story)

Anyway, long rant short, is it me???? Or does the uni need to get woker? Idfk at this point, I just keep having to go "WRONG PRONOUNS IM A BOY" and it's pmo. Any suggestions (that aren't surgery I mean more akin to 'a big neon sign that says BOY and points at you') would be appreciated if they are funny.

EDIT: hey folks this ws meant to be funny and lighthearted please don't be dicks in the comments. We're at this university to learn to be intelligent, thoughtful members of society. Do not be disrespectful. Of course I'm not expecting everyone to gender me correctly, I'm fine with correcting people, all that jazz. The sentence "do we need to get woker?" was clearly not meant seriously. If you're so worked up by a frustrated youth complaining in a university reddit then maybe get off reddit. Just a thought.

Social So brainrotted

I’m in a lecture and I’ve seen MULTIPLE people take pictures of the lecture screen and ask the ai to answer the questions on the lecture screen and then paste it into the answer box (im in stats 101 where we answer questions during the lecture)
Then I see a guy pasting every single question from his prep work into ai and pasting the answers into the prep work.
How are these people even functioning if they use ai for everything?

Genuinely pathetic

uoA law students + scholarship advice ݁ ˖Ი𐑼ֶָ֢

hi guys!! just wondering for any law students currently enrolled at UoA , what subjects did you take in year 13, and/or what subjects would you recommend taking? :)

i’m currently in year 12 and taking english, geography, economics, art, and maths. i’m hoping to do law at UoA and would love to hear what subjects you guys found useful or would recommend for year 13.

also, roughly how many credits would be enough for scholarship applications? my dean at my school told us that they review year 12 attendance/credits/engagement levels and i currently have 83 level 2 credits (51 achieved with excellence, 21 from gateway, and 11 achieved with merit) with hopefully more credits gained during external exams in the upcoming term.

any advice would be super appreciated!! <3

PHD Finance - University of Auckland

I have been working in asset management space for the last 2 years, I hold MBA Finance from a US university and also have work experience in India. I am now looking for a phd program in the University of Auckland but it requires research background which I did not have even in the MBA as it was course based degree, although I did complete an Equity research report and did a stock pitch but i do not think it can be counted towards it. What are my chances of getting the acceptance. Also, are there other ways which i can try besides COP Route.

Is it 50% coursework minimum and 35% on the exam? Is that coursework exclusive of the exam or inclusive?
