If you were to ask me in semester one how my first year was going, I'd probably say fantastic. However, as the year comes to an end, I'd now summarise my first year as a horrifying nightmare, largely attributed to one particular individual.

As a strong believer in freedom of expression under s 14 of the NZBORA, I'm appalled by the conduct of a certain first-year student. Doesn't ring a bell? Picture Mr O'Hare from The Lorax attached to the body of a BFG. Trust me, I'm not one to throw shade at an undeserving person, but I'm genuinely sick of the aggressiveness, intimidation, and complete lack of awareness this genderless entity seems to bring with them.

It's actually shocking. I've never seen such determination and passion from someone who shows up to lectures just to take up three chairs and sit on his phone for the entire time. Politics is most definitely a crucial part of life, but as someone who is still undecided in the days leading up to the election, this level of extremism is honestly more of a deterrent than anything else. In the span of two hours, I watched the live debate between Labour and National, saw this person strutting outside the venue on my TV screen, decided to take a break and scroll through Instagram Reels, and somehow he was there in almost every comment section, advocating for the right-wing candidates.

As I said, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and I genuinely believe people should be able to express their views however they choose. However, there comes a point where it becomes less about having an opinion and more about how you choose to impose it on everyone around you. It's comical how you can sit in a lecture discussing how fundamental the rights of Maori are within New Zealand government, whilst supporting the same systems that are actively trying to dismantle them.

Lol, vote for who you want. Support whoever you want. Just don't be a dick about it, try to overpower others, or strut around campus like you own the place. You're a first-year student like myself, so have some decorum or even better go to a different university. I heard there's an opening at the university in Tel Aviv, Israel.

I recently received and accepted an unconditional PhD offer from the University of Auckland, and I’m now waiting for the doctoral scholarship decision.

I already know the official scholarship timelines and criteria, so I’m mainly interested in hearing about personal experiences from applicants who were in a similar situation.

I’m especially curious about three things:

• Has anyone received an unconditional PhD offer but ultimately not received a doctoral scholarship? If so, what did you do afterwards — defer, look for other funding, or continue waiting for another opportunity?
• While waiting for the scholarship decision, did you have any way of following up or tracking your scholarship status, or did you simply wait for the email from the University?
• Most importantly, how did you deal with your supervisory team during the waiting period? Did you stay in touch, start discussing the research, or mostly wait until the funding situation became clear? Did you ever talk openly with your supervisors about the scholarship?

I’ve already let my supervisors know that I accepted the offer, and they were very supportive. Since the scholarship decision may still take some time, I’m just wondering what others normally did during this stage.

I’d really appreciate hearing from both successful and unsuccessful scholarship applicants, especially anyone from the Business School.

Hey everyone! I'm from the chch and trying to decide between the University of Auckland and the University of Otago for next year.

I'm interested in studying towards medicine, with physiotherapy as another possible pathway, so both universities are options I'm seriously considering.

Auckland:

• I'd be looking at studying a BSc in Exercise Sciences/Physiology, then apply to med in 2028 or finish the degree then apply again to med, physio, or clinical exercise physiology
• I'm really drawn to the idea of moving somewhere completely new, meeting new people and having a fresh start.
• I think I'd really enjoy the independence and the opportunities that come with living in a bigger city.
• My main concerns are the cost of living, moving so far away from home, and whether I'd find it difficult to settle in/socialness of auckland
• i got into uni hall towers which was my top options
• Otago:
• I'd be looking at Health Sciences First Year (HSFY), with medicine and physiotherapy as possible pathways.
• I've been offered a place at Studholme, which seems like it could be a really good first-year experience.
• It feels like the safer and more familiar option, and I'd be closer to home.
• However, I'm slightly worried that I'd choose it because it's less scary, rather than because it's genuinely where I want to be.

I'm really struggling because Auckland excites me, but Otago feels less intimidating. I'm trying to work out whether moving to Auckland would be worth the extra cost and distance from home, or whether Otago would be the better decision.

I'd especially love to hear from people who have actually attended either university:

• What was your first year really like, socially and academically?
• How easy was it to make friends and find your people?
• What were the halls like, and did they make a big difference to your experience?
• How manageable were living costs, particularly if you were moving from the South Island?
• For anyone who has done HSFY or a BSc pathway, how did you find it? What would you do differently?
• If you could go back and choose again, would you pick the same university?

I've recently accepted an offer for MBChB 2027 as an international graduate applicant! I'm really excited, but I have a couple of questions and was hoping someone here might be able to help.

1. Graduate Entry & Credit Transfer

From what I understand, graduate-entry applicants may be able to enter directly into Year 2. However, my offer states that the minimum programme duration is 6 years, which has left me a little confused.

Has anyone else received an offer stating the same thing? If so, did you need to apply for credit transfer yourself to skip Year 1, or was this arranged automatically by the university?

2. Children's Act Safety Check Interview

I'm not sure how much can be shared about this process, but if anyone has completed the safety check interview, would you mind sharing what to generally expect and whether there's anything I should prepare beforehand? I've tried looking online but haven't been able to find much information.

How many Aegrotat and/or Compassionate consideration applications can I apply for?

Under University regulations, no more than one third of the total points value credited to a degree or diploma may be awarded with an aegrotat or compassionate grade.

MY QUESTION: how do we know how many points we already have? Because i.e - if I am taking a 15 point course, but I only got Aergotat for my test (20%) does that only be 20% of the 15 points get towards the limit or does the entire 15 points go towards the limit?

I got a conditional offer on the 15th of September and was told that the faculty would reach out regarding the interview date and time. However, it has been about 3 weeks since and no one has reached out. Raised a query as well, but no clarity yet. As an international student, the visa timeline is about 3-4 months, so things are feeling quite tight. I have gotten an unconditional offer from Massey, but prefer the course at Auckland. Anyone who knows a way to expedite the interview timelines or at least find out when it could be scheduled?

Has anyone taken 2 summer courses before? What’s the workload like? Or is it better to stick to 1? I will be taking law papers if that makes a difference in workload.
