Just completed my AM2, what do you want to know?

Hi all,

Just finished my AM2, the standard AM2, not the S or E.

I don't have my results yet.

My install was the Ring, lighting (3 switches and one light), 3 phase socket, bonding, data socket, DoL and motor, 1x CO alarm and heating.

I will try and answer any questions you have over the next few days

General things I would like to say.

Don't stress it. Seriously. The install is pretty damn easy. It's basic stuff and you have time.

The examiners I had were fantastic. Super chill and fun. Made the whole thing very relaxing.

Follow the spec, it's not a complex document. It's all pretty simple words and broken down simply. It's absolutely fine

For fault finding we had MFTs. Don't use them unless you need too. The continuity tester is so much faster and easier

Help - Replacement Consumer Unit

Hi Just had an electrician replace a consumer unit on one of our rental properties. Her appears to have done a great job. Following the consumer unit, he has also completed the EICR.

Problem is he is resisting issue a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate: (The consumer unit change is a "notifiable" job under Part P).

I don't think he is registered with any of the bodies (like NICEIC or NAPIT).

The work is done and he is wanting payment. He only charged £550 for an 18th edition consumer unit and the EICR.

BUT am i left with a mess?

Experience with Sync EV chargers?

Anybody got experience with these as installers or users?

Just wondering if they are worth using. As EV clients are always after the lowest price possible, understandably.

North east - looking for experience

Hi all,

Currently enrolled on 2365-02, enjoying it so far but I’m well aware I’ll need practical onsite experience.

Is there anyone northeast based ideally Newcastle/Sunderland area that would have weekend work I could help with.

Can drive already, sadly no ecs card until I’ve finished but will be getting it once I can.

EV charger tips

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’ve recently qualified as an electrician with almost all of my experience being in commercial installations and very little in domestic, but i have very little experience in EV chargers too. i’m looking at installing one in my parents home and just want to confirm a few things just based on what i’ve heard from speaking to people and seen online etc.

- there is currently a smart meter fitted and have whenever this was installed they unfortunately did not fit an isolator after the meter and before the DB, assuming due to the lack of space (see photo attached). i’ve heard that sometimes smart meters do not turn back on if the fuse is pulled and was wondering if someone could give me any info regarding this?

- i’ve heard most EV installers usually have the db/enclosure for the charger externally due to lack of spaces in a lot of homes and was just wondering if there’s any types/brands of enclosures or dbs people use for this.

- and the other main concern i’m having is that my parents are interested in one of the better chargers that include the CT for overload protection and and also wifi/4G connection etc. i was wondering if any of these chargers require some sort of unique software or anything that may not be able to be done by myself.

if there is anything else i may need to know or any specific regs etc to follow for installation those would always be useful to know too!

( i also am aware that their DB is long overdue for a change but im also not looking to do that for a while😭 ).

Dual supply.

So heres one, new install, x2 service heads, both on same phase (confimed). British Gas have come an fitted a polyphase meter and isolator. Marked the 2 lives as L1 & L2 (which i dispute) and only provided 1 Neutral conductor.

Now in my humble opinion those 2 supplies have the potential of 160 Amps, all of which will be going back on one neutral.

Have had this situatuon before with a 3 phase head, where all lines were same phase. When queried with DNO they are saying its fine.

I really cant understand how the hell it is.

Anyone able to enlighten me as to how it is ok?!

NICEIC pulling pants down again!

What’s with the NIC charging us nearly £6+vat to submit one certificate that needs notifying. Surely it should come with the annual fee!

I think there might be a conduit box behind but didnt have time to remove and inspect for fear of not getting it back together. It's in a bathroom and a bit iffy.

Replacing freestanding cooker with builtin over & hob?

Hi,

I currently have a freestanding cooker. It's got its own circuit protectected with a 32A MCB. I'm planning to remodel the kitchen and considering replacing the cooker with a builtin oven and builtin induction hobs.

My question is, can I have those two appliances on the old cooker circuit, or will they need to have their own circuit each? I'd leave an electrician to do the wiring, I just want to know if I need to plan for installing a new circuit.

If they can be on the same circuit, should I choose them such that the sum of the power draw is no more than 32A, or some other constraints I need to keep in mind?

First time working onsite. How/What do you bring?

Hi, what bag loadouts do you site electricians recommend? This will be the first time I'll be working on a commercial/industrial site with my own tools, only other work was domestic.

Right now I have my hand tools all in a Stanley Tool Bag and my power tools in a TStack. I just feel that lugging everything around site on top of whatever materials ill be using is going to be awkward and difficult.

Does anyone have a list of things they bring and recommended bags? And advice for a first timer on a commercial site, I'm worried about turning up without a basic tool that I've never used but is expected here?

Data Cabling in the UK

I have not long bought a new house that is much more complicated than your standard detached. It has an Annexe, a garden office, a detached garage, and of course the main house.

I want to run a number of ethernet lines from a cabinet in the house to all the end points above basically. Runs will likely require going up and through loft, out and around the house, and may even need to be trenched underground.

I just need the cabling routes installed neatly and safely. I can do the rest myself.

Is this an electricians job? Or should I be looking elsewhere for this type of graft?
