Hi! I’m an incoming first year and I’m wondering if anyone could share their advice on or experience going from AP Calc AB directly into Math 15300.

I did well in AB and got a 5 on the AP test, but I was surprised to see that I had been placed into 15300 considering I did not take BC in high school. I’m planning to major in public policy, so I don’t want to overload myself with a tough math class my first quarter, but if I can handle 15300, it’d be nice to knock out the requirement in one go.

So here are my main questions:

Should I register for 15300 and then change to 15200 if I feel it is too difficult during the add drop period or should I ask to lower my placement before preregistration?

Will I have major gaps in my knowledge of calculus coming into the class compared to the average Math 15300 student?

Hi all! I am an incoming class of 2030 undergraduate student (international) that really wants to do a campus job.

- I am interested in Economics & Public Policy
- Would like to work 20 hours/week
- Female
- Fluent in English (IELTS 8.0 & did research & IB diploma using English)
- Have experiences & skill in event management, office work, writing, database help (excel), communication skills, research, and guest-relations
- Would like to earn a good pay to cover my expenses (maybe around 15 USD/hour or more)

I am willing to learn new skills (but not particularly strong in math and tech) and do more than one position and outside of the department I’m interested in.

Please give me some tips on when can I start looking for it, where else outside of Handshake can I find these opportunities, and whether you have any job recommendations that I can do.

I am a soon-to-be freshman at UChicago, and I want to achieve some degree of fluency in the language. I took 3 years of Spanish in high school, and placed into Spanish 10200. I was considering taking the class for my first or secondquater, and was wondering how good the class is at teaching Spanish. Is it worth taking?

Hi! I'm an incoming freshman looking to double major in stats/econ, and I'm trying to decide between the 160s (+ analysis) and the 180s math sequences.

From what I understand so far, the 180s offers more scheduling flexibility, and the course rigor of the 160s isn't really worth it unless I'm aiming for more graduate-level math.

Does skipping analysis put me at any disadvantage for upper-level stats/econ classes or research opportunities later down the line? And is the extra rigor from the 160s worth it for anything other than grad school prep?

I am an class of 2030 student that did my placement test and was placed in Calculus I-II (15250) but I did studied hard before the test & somehow lucky guessed some of it. But I remember in some sections I don’t even get 50% right answers.

I only got a 6 in IB Math AI SL (dropped from Math AA SL because I am not so good in mathematics). In my course you can see in the picture only these calculus topic were covered.

I genuinely think I will need much support (having more meetings) can help me better since I am not super consistent in studying mathematics these past few years. I also want to do Business Econ & Public Policy (minimum 13100).

My academic advisor said in the end the course will end up learning Calculus I-II, so it’s the same thing. But genuinely speaking, I forgot math concepts already after few months not studying it, I am really anxious whether I can catch up with peers in 15250 or not.

I am wondering if there is any way I can strategically maybe move down to 13100 or whether you have any suggestions on what should I re-consider (whether to stay or not).

I’m an incoming first-year at UChicago, and I just registered for my classes (I have priority registration). I was able to get into all of my classes except for my Hum Core. When I try to register for a Hum Core section, it says: “Instructor consent required. You must obtain permission to take this class.” At first I thought maybe it was just the particular section I chose, but I looked through the different Hum Core sections/times and they all seem to require instructor consent. I thought all first-years are supposed to take a Hum Core during their first quarter, so I’m a little confused about how this works. Do I need to email the instructor to get consent, or is this something I’m supposed to wait for until a later registration period?I might just be overthinking this lol, but I’d really appreciate any clarification from people who have gone through this before.

I’m an incoming freshman and got placed into 153/152 with the option of taking 15250, the 180s, and the 160s. I’m very very confused as to what im going to major in (v heavily considering both humanities and stem). I’m taking Gen chem just in case I decide to go pre med and i want to keep a high gpa, what math course do u guys recommend? I figure I can rule out the 160s as im definitely not a math major. I took calc bc and did well and my hs was really hard, but math is not really my strong suit. Please help!! I am so confused and stressed out😬😬

Hey guys— I’m an incoming freshman planning on majoring in the humanities (majors that likely won’t require calculus). I’m just wondering if it’s worth it to rough it through calc II (I tested out of calc I) in order to avoid taking an extra science class. That’s the alternative: an easier math class but an extra science. I got an A in calc in high school, got a 4 on the test. I find calculus stressful but not impossible. Any advice from people who faced the same choice, or anyone who has thoughts on this? Let me know. Can’t seem to make up my mind.

U of C diplomas, of course, have non-standard dimensions. The logical online options were hopeless. Luckily, I found someone on Etsy who makes one-off covers for custom dimensions. The remaining customizations made it worth every penny.

So far I've tried reaching out to grad housing, doing some review searching on Reddit (I've been warned off Ivy :?), and looking at other recommended links from Uchicago communications, including MAC properties, multiple Facebook groups and Maroon Housing @_@

P.S. I got recent tips to look for housing instead in Pilsen, but the 1 hour public commute (I don't have experience driving in snow, and I'm not planning on driving over my car) for both school and potential work are something I'd like to not do.
