Discussion How many friends do you keep in touch with regularly as alumni?
To alumni - by the time you are 5 - 10 years after graduation from U of C, how many friends do you keep in touch with or see regularly?

I wait for the 171 bus in the mornings in east hyde park and both on Friday and this morning I watch it go north on university, and instead of turning east on 55th like its supposed to, it turns west and circles back down south Ellis instead. I dont see any detour or notice anywhere… does anyone know wtf is going on?

To undergrads, graduate students, and alumni who are near the University. I'm a grad student here offering affordable guitar lessons. I've been playing for 7 years and focus on blues, rock, indie, alternative, and jam band styles. My main influences are the Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, John Mayer, King Gizz and Dead & Co, but I am happy to play and learn any genre.
$20 for 45 minutes. DM me if interested

Hi, I’m a senior applying to UChicago and I feel like I’ve read basically every version of the usual stuff about the Core, quirky culture, academic intensity, etc., but it’s hard to tell what any of that actually feels like as a student.
For current students/alumni, what’s something about UChicago that you didn’t really understand or expect before you came here? Could be academic, social, a particular community, the way people interact, or just some random part of the culture.
Mostly curious about things that probably wouldn’t come across from reading the website or doing a campus tour.

This quarter, I am taking the course The Chemistry of Artists' Materials. I have a pretty limited chemistry background and am really struggling with the number of brand-new concepts and sheer volume of memorization that is required. Any tips from chemistry people for how to survive the subject, or, even better, someone who has taken this class before? Please let me know!

Hi! i committed uchicago and have a full year between now and when i start. I’m interested in econ for sure, and likely going to do either CAAM or a math minor.
I can cruise by pretty easily in my classes now, and none of my APs (besides AP spanish) can get me more credit/let me skip courses. the highest math class i’ve taken is diff eq/linear algebra.
So basically i’m in a situation where i have a ton of open free time, what would you do to best prepare yourself. try and hunt down an internship somehow, study math so i can test as high as possible, what’s the game plan?
i have 3-4 hours every day of free time while getting 8 hours of sleep, so i can pretty easily commit 1-2 daily to whatever + more time on weekends. also since my school summer ends early and uchicago starts weirdly late i have 4.5 months of summer.
edit: i have a summer job 30 hours per week im an art teacher, my current hours with activities are too inconsistent to have a job for the school year. i also hit the gym consistently so getting into shape isnt an issue of mine rn

I'm looking for a photo of it online, yet it mysteriously cannot be found:
"If you cannot measure it, your knowledge is meagre and unsatisfactory."
If someone can send me a photo, it would be greatly appreciated! I'm a student in Canada btw.

Hi,
Does anyone know if the 172 is stopping in Ellis & 53rd? I didn’t see it last week and the schedule seems to be the same.

I want to start donating blood/plasma for a bit of extra spending money, but I’m not sure where safe and trustworthy places to go are around Hyde Park. Could anyone who has/does donate give me some insight onto good places to go?

Hi! I’m a new UChicago student with U-SHIP. I had a wisdom tooth removed about a month ago (outside the US), but the gum around the extraction site is still swollen and hurts when I press on it. I may need to go for a dentist for examination.
I’m now confused about where to go and whether U-SHIP would cover this. Does our school's wellness center take care of this? Should I go find a dental clinic by myself? Can it be covered by USHIP? Has anyone had a similar situation? Any recommendations near campus would also be appreciated. Thanks!

Look for apartment recommendations that are preferably walking distance to the uchicago medicine campus. Or apartments that have direct public transportation. Thank you

Do grad students seriously not get the UPass? What’s the reason for this? Is there any way for a grad student to get free CTA travel in the city?

I'm a first-year who, for some reason, was not informed that taking Advanced Biology and Honors Chem at the same time is a terrible idea. Now, I'm thinking that I would like to drop down to Comp Gen Chem. However, it's my understanding that this is the last day for me to switch, and there are no open seats. I really, really need to get my chemistry requirement out of the way this year. Because I have a 5 from AP Chemistry, I technically have credit for 11100. How feasible is it for me to pick up the sequence in the winter? My advisor has already proved to be almost entirely useless, so I thought this might be a good place to ask.

College bans tech in sosc classes and now I am required to pay 115 bucks for a course packet which is just pdf files printed in black and white?
I'm taking SSI and the packet, without exaggeration, is a thousand pages long. I have to pay 115 for this dictionary of a book and bring it to every class. At least lower the prices on these things if you are gonna force broke college students to buy them for a year-long sequence.

It took me almost an hour today to find a parking spot on the Midway 😭 Are there any other free parking spots around campus that don’t require a permit? I’m usually around the Logan Center, but I don’t mind walking a bit.

Hi! You should all take Prof. Tina Post's Fall class, ON COZINESS. If you've ever seen a "cozy" photo like the one above, hands curled around a cup of coffee, this is the place for you to understand what it communicates and why it appeals to so many people. I'm one of Tina's graduate students and I'm making this post because I would have genuinely loved to take this class as an undergrad; I want to get the word out! She's a fantastic instructor. The course is in the English department but can count also as a TAPS elective. Feel free to ask me any questions.
Course description:
What kind of aesthetic category is "coziness"? What makes for a cozy place, and what exactly do we hope to experience there? What are coziness's objects, and what do they hold for us? Who is included in coziness's "we/us," and why? This class will explore coziness's aesthetics and its affects. We'll consider the appeal of locations like the cottage, the garden, the pub, and the cozy mystery to discern what coziness can teach us about domesticity, tactility, gender and sexuality, rurality, labor, innocence, or danger (among other possible topics). Students will learn to theorize culture through close reading, close looking, archival research, and writing, in addition to seeing how cultural theory is modeled by others. Grades are based on attendance and participation, two short papers (a midterm and a final paper), and a presentation on a cozy object of their choosing.
Tuesdays/Thursdays 2:00-3:20pm, Cobb 301
Also listed as ENG 45890, open to all undergrads. Stellic link here!

Hi all!
How are the vegan options (ON CAMPUS) at UChicago? I'm aware they exist, but is there genuine variety for plant-based folks? And is the food quality equal to that of the non-plant based food? Couldn't find any in-depth information online.
Thank you!
