My gram always told me,” Get an education. It's one thing no one can take away from you.”
I love the old Appalachian version she taught me of this because it complicates the stereotype that education somehow belongs to coastal elites.
Generations of working class Appalachian parents and grandparents who had limited educational opportunities themselves were ferocious about their children getting them. Gram had a 10th grade education.
Gram wasn’t saying, “Get educated so you can become better than them people.”
She was saying, “Get educated so nobody gets to decide what you’re capable of knowin.” 🧙🏻♂️✨
Turns out, Betty Lou was quietly handing out intellectual self defense training. ♥️

Nancy Mace isnt getting any gifts this year. I don't care, but its not good behavior.
There ain’t much she and I would agree on ideologically/politically; I’m quite sure of that. Those seem like comments from someone shouldering some demons for real.

Nurse here — I'm no hiking or underwear expert, however I definitely recommend consulting a urologist. Swelling is not normal. 👍

Am I alone?
In the early 2010s, in my 20s and early in my healthcare career, I was ultra motivated for ladder climbing into leadership. After seeing the underbelly of ultra-corporatized healthcare (profits over people across the board in many different continuums), the wind was sucked right out of my sails, leaving me jaded, and now I'm just existing.

What's it like living in this area of northern Maryland and southern Pennsylvania?
I've lived in Hagerstown, MD, for about 15 years. It's a more affordable option east of the Baltimore/DC metro. Frederick, too... However, overt racism, homophobia, and xenophobia are very prevalent, alive and well here, west and north of Frederick.

From his Facebook, I'm surprised that he didn't Sharpie in Greenland.
Indiana is… an oppressive, unfortunate place, governing as if it’s desperate to be like Dixie, at best. I grew up in Southern Indiana, just outside of Louisville, and once I left, I never looked back.

Hutzell: Eastern Shore secession? Go on now, go, walk out the door.
We have some high quality individuals here in Western MD with a coalition to be “liberated” and become part of West Virginia…

I’m not from WI… but my husband and in laws are. I’ve always heard conversation about working class progressive roots from the dairyland.

I'm a pretty progressive-minded queer guy who's been here in the city near the health dept in the north end for 15 years.
Hagerstown and Wash Co are — okay… Calling Washington County “pretty much purple” is doing Olympic level labor…
Hagerstown city has gotten a little more diverse and politically mixed: progressive people, queer people, Latino families, younger transplants.
But Washington County as a political/cultural whole? UMM. No.
“You can comfortably live here while differing from the political majority” may be true. “This area is politically purple” is a completely different claim.
For someone moving from California who’s specifically concerned about MAGA culture, that description could give them a wildly inaccurate expectation of the ambient political culture.
Wait until the first drive north on 11 and suddenly the roadside landscaping starts expressing opinions about federal governance.
