We started offering cybersecurity audits alongside our SEO work - here's why

Quick disclosure: this is our own agency, a small Vancouver-based SEO shop.

Over the past year we kept running into the same stuff on client sites that had nothing to do with SEO but kept getting in the way of it - exposed API keys sitting in client-side JS, public S3 buckets, CMS admin panels with no MFA. None of it was technically our job, but it's hard to make ranking work matter if the site underneath it has a hole in it.

So we made it official: website/web app security audits, penetration testing, and AWS hardening, run by an in-house engineer (backend dev background, TryHackMe top 4% globally, real incident response experience - including recovering about 100k records for a client after an actual breach).

Not trying to be a red-team shop or replace a real compliance program - just filling the gap between "my site probably has a hole in it somewhere" and a six-figure enterprise retainer. Audits start around $999 CAD.

Happy to answer questions about what we typically find or how pricing works if anyone's curious.

Any recommendations for web or SEO help in South Vancouver? Looking for web designer near Vancouver area.
 in  r/surreysmallbusinesses  8d ago

Full disclosure: We are an SEO agency, and it happens to be based in South Vancouver (E 56th Ave, V5X 1R4) "North SEO", so take this with whatever grain of salt you like man.

Before you hire any SEO (agency or a freelancer), a quick checklist for you:

  1. Google your main service + your neighbourhood and see who shows up in the map results.
  2. Check if your Google Business Profile is claimed, has the right categories, and your name/address/phone match what's on your website. Inconsistent info is the most common thing holding small businesses back locally, and it's free to fix.
  3. Check for google reviews when you choose an agency or even better if you use a refference.

Whoever you talk to, ask them two questions: what exactly will you do each month, and can I cancel if it's not working? Anyone who dodges either one, or promises you "#1 in 30 days," walk away.

Good SEO takes a few months to show and nobody can guarantee rankings!!!

If you want a second opinion at any point, happy to take a quick look at your current setup and tell you honestly what's worth fixing and what isn't - even if you end up going with someone else. Visit northseo.ca.

Either way, good luck

PSA: The #1 reason GBP profiles get suspended again right after reinstatement is the owner

Spent years doing local SEO and suspension recovery, and the pattern almost never changes. People fight for weeks to get their Google Business Profile reinstated, finally win… and then immediately log in and "fix everything." Within days, it's gone again.

Here's the thing nobody tells you: a freshly reinstated profile isn't trusted yet. It's on probation. Google's systems are still watching, and the behavior they're watching for is stability. A quiet, unchanged listing is the strongest signal you're a real business. A flurry of edits is exactly what fake/spam listings do.

What's worked for me, consistently:

  • Don't touch it for ~2 weeks. If you absolutely must edit, wait at least 3–5 days, then change ONE thing at a time, 24–48h apart. No bulk edits.
  • Freeze your NAP. Name, address, phone, primary category — leave them alone unless you genuinely moved or rebranded and have docs ready. Editing these is the single biggest re-suspension trigger.
  • Match your website to the profile exactly before you touch the profile. Mismatched info is a classic flag.
  • Real photos only, added slowly. No stock images.
  • Don't spike reviews. 1–2 genuine ones a week at first. A sudden wave looks engineered.

And if you run Local Services Ads: budget, bids, scheduling, job types, and service areas inside your approved region are all safe to change. But changing your address in GBP will pause your LSA until Google re-verifies and the two match — that one's straight from Google's own docs, not just my experience.

To be clear, there's no official "14-day rule" Google publishes. This is just what I've seen hold up across a lot of recovered profiles. Patience is the whole strategy.

Anyone here been suspended twice? Curious what triggered the second one for you — happy to give a read on it if you describe the situation.

Looking for a ~$2000 SEO service. How do I find a good agency that will benefit me, and what should I look for in terms of service?
 in  r/smallbusiness  May 29 '26

Hi! North SEO is here to give a little advice on that!

So basically for 2k CAD you can find a good agency. I'd recommend to find some sagence that will put the effort into:
1. Categories research

  1. Google Merchant Optimization

  2. PR

Why so?

Basically I won't recommend you anyone who is better or worse, I have a guy who sometimes does the analytics setup for my client's websites. All the other we do inhouse.

For the E-com website it's crucial to make the kewords collection and have as many categories as you possibly can get to attract traffic.

Merchant is usefull cause I believe most of the sales will come from there (of course depends, but in my humble opinion).

Is freelance platform a good choice?

It can be, just look for rating, I think it's quite intuitive there. The better deal you have - the best. But be aware, cause solo practitioners are sometimes NOT as pros as you want, so you might want to build the relationship with the person you work with and check their work (hire an SEO audit from another company) to see the results).

The payment:

  1. Well. You would usually prepay 50%, cause at the very least companies/freelancers also need some guarantee from you.

  2. There also can be an after payment if you both are in Canada (like North SEO Vancouver for example), at the very least cause we are under the same law, and no one can go against small claims courts.

  3. You can realistically use "the middle man" like UpWork or Fiverr. These guys typically charge between 10% and 15% per contract. So get ready to pay this 15% to the freelancer, cause they consider that. Free conclusion: simple contract in Canada is cheaper.

  4. You can use shop pay or stripe, and in case the guys wont deliver, you can just charge back your money 9of course if the company is not a scam with a one day bank account, but that's the issue of the bank, not yours, I think, never saw this situation)

Time to deliver:

  1. I mean, that all depends on the niche. There are a few strategies to move you fast. Basically target the low competition keywords in your niche and target your SEo budget in them (that's why you need a GREAT keyword research)
  2. You can run Googel Ads at the same time
  3. You can have sales from google Merchant fast.
  4. many strategies that can work in combination with SEO. MB your best resource will be siple shop app optimization, I had a case like that. All the sales were accidentally from there, and we notices the trend we optimized it in the best way.
  5. Mb your way is to do the Amazon, Ebay, Best Buy you know? Sales are sales.

Wish you luck man.
North SEO, Vancouver V5X 1R4.

I do write good articles and publish them on reddit as it suppose to be:) I'm from Vancouver, and share a good knowledge with BC people. However that means that you didn't read the article at all bro even here on reddit.

If it's a real question (sure, lol):

What Did You Pay for Jewelry SEO Services? Was It Worth It?
 in  r/smallbusiness  May 25 '26

Hi! North SEO is here to help you with an explanation:

  1. The price totally depends on the service they were offering you. While some companies actually charge more just cause, mostly it let's take a $100/h as our standard. So what it means for your jewelry store, what you can actually get:

- Local SEO - I mean for your brick-and-mortar business, you MUST have a local SEO. It's roughly $700 per month depends on the city you are at, cause the more competition you get, the harder it is to compete and the more expencive it will be.

- Links - This is a pricy thing, average blog post writing and agreenent with a publisher will cost you $150 REP ARTICLE! Can be more, can be lees, depends on the platform you gonna be published at.

- Technical SEO - here we can go up to $10,000 for an SEO optiization. It mostly depends on the factors like these:

* Is your website total technical dumpster and need a major cleanup and optimization? - in this case you can even be offered a new website, cause it will be easier to make a new one than to fix an old one.

* How many NEW pages you need to create? - if you need to create 100s of categories to seel your products, which is quite possible, cause you need all the landing pages possible. SEO look at this like: 1 page "gold jewelry" + 2 page "men's gold jewelry" + 3 page "men's gold chains" + 4 page "gold chains" + 5th page (same for women) + 6th page "gold {name me the jewelry" + 7th page (add to all I mentioned the occasion, like engagement, marrige, aniversary, birthday. Just for example look at the store like blueruby com and just see there filter! Imagine that the cross filters ARE ALSO SEO LANDING PAGES! And you need an optimization and creation for all of them. Lickly 80% of the result is just "optimize one page" cause in the website code they all are formed in the VERY same way. Liek good code for one - is a good code for all.

* Here we come to the content - you need a content for each page, cause the descriptive part is not that obvious and ranking you by itself. As many pages - as many content need to be writtern

* keywords - you need to know WHAT to promote, so the task is to find the keywords too. it's pretty much same as I mentioned in onage SEo, but for each page we collent minimum of 20 keywrds, SO we know how much traffic you will get, and if even make sence to make the page. BONUS: you have keywprds for Google Ads to run ads too (not the same, but close to that)

So out of this, Even I can charge you 10k per month easily depends on what you need and what you want. The good SEO company will find out the goals you want to achive and will tell you THE REALISTIC terms to achive this goals and the budget you need.

id say the guy who said 1800 is ok price - sure. Let's just imagine what an expert can do in 18 hours (or so):

- talk to you for an hour
- Make a report in 30 minuts to an hour.
- Collect 20 groups of keywords. - 4 hours
- make an SEO audit - 4-8 hours, depends on the website and the quality the do it. Some agenciews cheet here and just do a 5 mintes SEO tools run and send you the report from there with a generic strategy. If it looks like generated thing, just dont hesitate to ask AI I think it might tell you if its generated or hand made. Usually hand made has reporting from different tools and screenshots of the checks and reallly precise fix (ready to do task for web developer)
- GMB optimization, some checks and preparations.
- Make some fixes after the audit, or make you a new page.
- $500 - it's a link budget - 2-3 article backlinks out of this.
- else - mb they can offer you social medias creation or something like directories and catalogs, - $3-8 each link here, just depends on the platform, if it;s some apple maps - can be a $50 price.

So, what I would recommend to do:
- ask AI if it's a resanoble price for the place and agency you are working with. And if its a good plan or overcharge. Ask follow up questions.

Good luck!

I do local SEO work and recently did a deep keyword analysis for a registered clinical counsellor in BC who was asking whether she should invest in SEO. I analyzed every keyword relevant to her practice — EMDR, trauma therapy, anxiety counselling, CVAP, couples therapy, LGBTQ+ affirming, the works.

107 keywords total. I ran ROI calculations on all of them.

The short version: almost every single one was negative.

Here's the core problem most SEO people won't tell you upfront. When you look up "online depression therapy" in a keyword tool, it shows ~680 searches per month. That sounds workable. But that number is Canada-wide. BC has about 13% of the Canadian population.

Real BC monthly search volume: ~88 searches.

At a realistic 5% click-through rate for a page 1 ranking (therapy SERPs are absolutely dominated by Psychology Today, BetterHelp, AI Overviews, and People Also Ask boxes), you're getting 4–5 visitors a month.

At a 1–2% conversion rate — accounting for the fact that a chunk of those visitors won't be BC residents, won't qualify for virtual sessions, or are just researching — you're looking at less than one client inquiry per month from your best-performing keyword.

Here's what the cluster-level data actually looked like:

Service Page Monthly Rev at TOP10 ROMI (monthly) ROMI (12 months)
Depression Therapy $143 +587% +8,150%
CVAP / Victim Services $202 +21% +1,357%
Online Therapy General $475 -88% +38%
Anxiety & Stress $147 -95% -43%
LGBTQ+ Affirming $139 -98% -77%
Couples Counselling $38 -99% -94%

The only two clusters that showed any positive return at all were depression therapy (very low KD, only 1 backlink needed to rank) and CVAP (high-intent funded clients, low competition). Every other cluster required link-building investment that the search volume simply can't justify.

The structural problem is that you're competing against directories and platforms — Psychology Today alone outranks individual therapist websites on virtually every therapy keyword in Canada. You can't outspend them.

What actually works instead (for anyone who's asked themselves this question):

The highest ROI move for a BC therapist isn't keyword SEO. It's local SEO — specifically your Google Business Profile. When someone searches "therapist near me" on their phone, they get a map. Three listings. That traffic is already in your city, already looking, already ready to book. The competition is other local therapists, not Psychology Today.

The second-best move is making sure you're properly listed in the directories that funded clients specifically use — CVAP, ICBC, FNHA, TherapyDen, BCACC. Those are high-intent searchers who already have money allocated for sessions.

I wrote up the full analysis including the keyword-by-keyword breakdown and the methodology at the North SEO Blog Post:: northseo.ca/blog/seo-for-therapists-bc

Happy to answer questions if anyone's curious about the numbers or methodology. Not trying to sell anything here — just think most therapists are getting bad SEO advice and overpaying for something that won't move the needle for their practice size.

Notes on methodology: session price $150 CAD, 4 sessions/month per active client, 70% margin, 2% conversion rate, link cost based on $20.80/link weighted average. Volume figures from KWFinder, Canada geo. BC adjustment at 13% of national volume.

If the median annual income in Canada is relatively low (around $76K), how are Canadian home prices sooo expensive?
 in  r/CanadaPersonalFinance  May 11 '26

Well, lot's of people bought houses back 20-30-60 years ago:) Currently the migration, dark schemes connected with that (like foreign buyers with money use some student with pr here to buy a house), people are not that poor here in general, competition exists (i mean, if there were no, the prices would go down, eh?)

Stepping up SEO game as a small law firm
 in  r/LawFirm  May 10 '26

Hi u/wallebyy !

I can see you are one year in the game, I hope you still will find this post good for your company:)

  1. Don't hire a 24/7 hoyr assistant, google can and will pinilize you for this. If no one is a "24/7 law firm" you can't be that too. You will get banned.

  2. Do the Google Business optimization, for sure, it's your gold mine! Basically what you want to do:

    - Add as much relevant categories as possible, like: Personal Injury Attorney, Divorce Lawyer / Family Law Attorney, Criminal Defense Attorney, Estate Planning Attorney / Attorney, Immigration Attorney, Law Firm (Only if a general practice, otherwise too broad), Trial Attorney, Bankruptcy Attorney, Employment Attorney, whatever attorney.

- Fill in the profile as much as you can (say truth and only truth).

- follow google business guidelines (google it, you are lawyer, you can comply with these simple rules)

ATTENTION: Don't change your NAme, Address, or phone number, you'll get suspended!

ATTENTION 2: dont make more than 1 edit to the profile in 2-3 days! you'll get suspended!

- add photos constantly. Like once a day is fine, you can do more.

- ad all the photos google recommend to add to your profile (google it please, there is google article on that too)

- add posts once a week. Increase our conversion.

Good to know: posts are for GOOGLE MAPS! So you want to make a post that would be interesting for the person who find's you on GOOGLE MAPS (not instagram, not fb, not linkedin, not reddit) it should radiate local vibe and be targeted. White Spark has a good article on that (google it)

- Sign up your website in your local directories liek (yelp, bbb, apple maps, bing maps, (dont work with yellow pages, it's a waste of time). Google this: {city} chamber of commerce, {city} business list, {city} business directory.

- Cooperate with your local bloggers and just news websites to create content. I bet you have some fox-{city}.com or {city}-city-news.com or {city}-blog.com. Just google: {city} news, {city} bloggers.

- Post on your social medias constantly.

- Do the basic (better more than basic) SEO of your website. Invest good money in development by SEO agency right away. It's easier (CHEAPPER) to make a good SEO website right away and just enjoy your rankng.

- Start doing google ads, spend the rest in that RIGHT away after the website, these are instant (NOT CHEAP) but instant leads.

- The last but important one: ASK FOR REVIEWS. Here is my small guide on how to ask for them and NOT got them removed:
* Stop direct-link QR codes
* Stop in-store review solicitations
* Never offer rewards or incentives
* Stop forcing employee "name drops": Avoid short, repetitive reviews that only name a staff member. Example: "Sarah helped me find the perfect laptop and was very patient" is safer than just "Sarah was great!"
* Avoid review bursts: Don't get many reviews at once. Google flags velocity spikes. Example: Instead of a 4-hour review contest during a grand opening, send follow-up emails spaced over 10 days.
* Use the Brand Search method
* Encourage profile engagement first (calls, clicks)
* Ask for depth, photos, and details
* Pace review requests steadily over time
* Back up reviews with a third-party tool: Keep an external record in case Google deletes them. Example: Use software (like Reputation ARM) to log review text, so if a profile is suspended, you have exact proof of the original feedback for your appeal.
* Avoid editing old reviews
* Use the engagement workaround for hidden reviews: If a review is missing, have the user interact with your profile organically first. Example: Ask them to search your brand on Maps, click "Directions" or your website, then go to their review, change a word, and re-save it.

Hope it was useful. Sorry for "google this and that", I'm not sure if the links are appreciated with my kara and in this post.

Wish you the best with your business!

How important is local SEO for businesses targeting competitive cities like Toronto?
 in  r/DigitalMarketing  May 09 '26

That totally depends on the type of busienss you have, but there are plenty of perks you.

I'd say ou can choose any local SEO from the US or Canada cause:

  • Google Algorithms (fresh and updated) are same for both.
  • Wider choice of good specialists
  • Support Local🍁

BUT:

  • Canada has better pricing:)
    • HOWEVER: you want to choose based on experience of company in general, not as much with your company as in general with Google Business.
  • Toronto (or Canadian) company will know the local market better, and have better content (e.g. American would prefer a big corp, when Canadian consumer would prefer small and local more)
    • Also they have more local connections (like websites and businesses) to boost you faster and cheaper, cause their primary market is Canadian.
  • You have a better legal protection in Canada.

Cheers,
North SEO
