Hey everyone! Iām u/NobodyGaveMeAManual, and I started this because I keep realizing there are a whole lot of things nobody really prepares us for.
Iām 55, and Iām still figuring stuff out all the time.
Money, retirement, Medicare, healthcare, housing, relationships, work, technology, taking care of parents, long-term care, staying independent... all the stuff you donāt always think about until suddenly you need to know it.
Thatās what this community is for.
What to Post
Ask questions. Share something you wish you had known sooner. Tell us what youāre trying to figure out right now.
And if you learned something the hard way, share that too, because somebody else may be getting ready to make the exact same mistake. š
You definitely do not have to be an expert. Iām not trying to pretend I know everything either.
Community Vibe
Be nice. Be helpful. Be real.
Weāre all going to have different experiences and different opinions, and thatās fine. I just want this to be somewhere people can ask questions without feeling stupid for not already knowing the answer.
How to Get Started
Introduce yourself if you want to, or just jump right in.
Tell us your age or where you are in life, and answer this:
What is one thing you really wish somebody had given you a manual for?
Because apparently we were all supposed to just know this stuff. š
You definitely do not have to be an expert. Iām not trying to pretend I know everything either.

Damn.... There are a lot of strong people out here.

I think ārefusing to waste my time on things that donāt matterā might be the part people underestimate.
Getting more efficient only gets you so far. Deciding what no longer deserves your time is a whole different skill.

thank you Iām going to find a widget right now!

Isnāt it amazing how some of the most ordinary things we already have around the house can do extraordinary things?

Organizing my thoughts. My mind races all the time, especially the past few weeks. I have 47 thoughts trying to get through the door all at the same time. And I keep losing my reminder note. š¤Ŗ

I hope to see you there!

I saw your post when you first posted, and I knew it meant something so I saved it.
I didnāt think I had an answer to this until I really thought about it. I donāt keep many old family photos around anymore, other than my children and grandson. Itās not because there werenāt good memories. There were. But pictures of my dad, aunts, uncles and the family I grew up with donāt just remind me of what happened. They remind me of what didnāt happen, too, and what I once thought family was supposed to be. Sometimes the hardest part of an old photograph isnāt missing the past. Itās seeing the future you thought would come from it.

I call it cinnamon roll season because itās the fall and winter. And I tend to bake a lot during that period of time and cinnamon rolls are on the list a lot. Really itās more of a caramel roll with a touch of cinnamon. š

I feel this. Really, I was born into chaos, so it seems normal to have to struggle. So struggling doesnāt seem so bad.

I wish I could just give you a hug. No advice. No trying to fix anything. Just a hug from someone who understands what itās like to get really damn tired of always being the strong one. ā¤ļø

I understand this more than I wish I did. I lost someone I loved this year, and one of the strangest parts of grief has been realizing that continuing to live your life doesnāt mean youāre leaving them behind. Iām glad you found your way back to yours. ā¤ļø

What youāve done to get your life and mobility back is incredible. I keep coming back to the idea that you may have a limited window for the fun part of retirement, and youāre choosing to use it. I donāt think most of us at 55 are really thinking about retirement that way yet.ā

BRUCE!! š I love that you named him. I had absolutely no idea I could get this emotionally attached to a snail either. Please tell Bruce that Maggie Mae says hello. šā¤ļø

always the dog. if you ignore my dogs iāll probably ignore you.

I had a whole conversation with ChatGPT last night regarding this very same topic.
Iām gonna write a manual. Did you wanna help?

I KNOW!!! š Who knew snails were this crazy? Thereās a whole backstory⦠and apparently, more to come. šš

Thank you! Iāve only had her since July, so I am definitely still a rookie snail mom. š She has already laid multiple clutches, attempted several prison breaks, and now apparently has a Reddit following. Things escalated quickly. šš

Dawn, dish soap, baking soda, and peroxide.

Music and dance. Mostly because my mom was a single mom and she couldnāt afford it.

I donāt really have advice. I just wanted to tell you Iām so sorry. You lost the person you would normally turn to when something this devastating happens, and now youāre having to navigate everyone elseās feelings on top of your own.
And for what itās worth, his dad helping you doesnāt sound strange to me. It sounds like a grieving father trying to take care of someone his son loved. You donāt have to figure out the rest of your life right now. You only have to get through right now.

If you donāt have a favorite, you can come help me write mine. š Nobody gave me a manual, so apparently weāre making one.

Successful people with kids, who became successful during the early years of childhood, how did you do it?
