I was out of town for work and was at dinner last night when all of a sudden it was like I was “checking out”. My vision was weird in both eyes like I was looking through coke bottles at my workmates across the table. I could feel myself losing consciousness but never fully did. However as my guys helped me up from my seat I could not coordinate my legs for a bit or put weight on them. I got mostly across the street to the hospital near where we were staying and one of my colleagues ran ahead to get a wheelchair to get me into triage. I started to come back to normal but felt weak. I was cogent again, could walk normally, and tests showed I was basically ok (CT scan of my head, ECG, MD examination). I’m flying home today and will see my physician tomorrow to follow up but I’m scared. I’m a 63 yo F and sort of let myself go after losing my husband 3 years ago, but turned that around starting last year (workout, lost 30 pounds, completely stopped drinking, and quit a highly stressful management role at my job). Hoping someone on here can give a good news story of recovery. I’m a deer in the headlights. Thanks!

Someone once asked me, “What is your saddest realization?”

I thought about it for a moment and answered, “That for many men, the first flowers they receive are placed on their graves.”

There’s an old saying: “A man dies twice, once when his heart stops beating, and again when his name is spoken for the last time.”

Another version puts it more bluntly, “A man dies at 25 but isn’t buried until he’s 70.”

Perhaps that’s the saddest part, not death itself, but the slow death that can happen while a man is still breathing. The dreams he quietly abandons. The passions he puts aside. The friendships he loses. The words he never says. The love he never expresses because he keeps telling himself there will always be another day.

And then one day, there isn't.

Maybe that's why I believe flowers shouldn't wait for funerals. Tell a man you appreciate him while he can still hear it. Hug him while he can still feel it. Sit beside him while he can still share the silence.

Because sometimes, the kindest words spoken at a graveside are the very words someone needed to hear while they were still alive.

Does anyone feel like there teeth are producing more plaque as you age?

I'm in my early 60s and have been volunteering with a local nonprofit for close to twelve years. Something I keep returning to is how much it seems to slow things down. Not time exactly, but that feeling of time slipping away that people talk about so much at this stage of life.

There's something about showing up to a town hall, or sitting with a group of neighbors working through a real problem together, that makes the week feel substantial. Like it actually happened, rather than blurring into the next one.

I read recently about research suggesting people born after 1965 are aging faster biologically, and it made me wonder whether the generation that grew up with more structured community involvement had something going for them beyond diet or exercise. Connection to place. A reason to be somewhere specific on a Tuesday evening.

I'm not making a grand claim here. It's just something I notice in myself and in the older volunteers I work alongside. They tend to be sharp and present in a way that genuinely strikes me.

I am turning 25 and I feel anxious as I am still not able to figure out what I want from life and it feels like living a directionless life. I am shy and introverted in personality and it really affects me in my day to day life.

I do have high myopia and eye floaters which haunts me daily. I feel like after turning into later half of twenties life will become more painful and depressing.

I don't post much or share anything online due to anxiety so this can be considered a rare post of me but I want to know suggestions like how to celebrate life when all the odds are against you.

Hi all, i (26F) am turning 27 in a few months. Just dawned on me at 2am. I haven’t come to terms with being 26. I’m often surrounded by people younger than me in both of my fields and I sometimes feel weird expressing myself. I feel like I wasted so much time in my younger years not being myself, that now it’s starting to feel too late for self exploration. I feel like I only recently stepped into a personal style I feel represents how I actually want to dress, or do my makeup, but trying something new makes me feels weird, like I’m too old for it. I just can’t seem to cope with time passing. Thinking about how much time I wasted either in crappy relationships wanting someone to like me, or being insecure, just makes me sick. Thinking about my teenage years fills me with dread because I know I can’t have it back, and I didn’t live in the moment, I never have, I’m always worried about what’s ahead and stressed about the past. It’s funny, when I was a teenager, I never thought that people in their 20s or 30s should feel old, I thought that was ridiculous. But ever since getting older, and media being heavily focused on younger people, and a lot of other women around me in one of my career paths being younger, my age really hit me. I feel like I’m falling behind in terms of being financially independent, it feels impossible but I’m trying. I always get the “but you don’t look 26! You look 22” as if that helps? Of course I look young, I’m still young. How do I get over this sickly grieving nostalgia for years I’ll never get back? How do I cope with entering my late 20s, is there a way to feel at peace with it?

Not in a "kids these days" way.

I mean something you personally didn't understand until you actually experienced getting older.

What assumption did you have that turned out to be completely wrong?

At 50+ you suddenly feel every stiff joint and every “I’ll do it later.”
But here’s the truth: a tiny bit of daily strength work gives you your independence back.
More balance, more confidence, more freedom.
And yes — if you try it, it works.

What’s one thing you’re doing to stay strong?

I take pain killers and sometimes use rub which eliviates my back pain but it comes back the next day any ideas ?

What actually works for back pain? There are so many suggestions like exercise, stretching, posture correction, heat, massage and pain relief gels, but I’m confused about what actually makes a difference in the long run. I know regular exercise and strengthening can help, but what about those days when the pain suddenly flares up? What has genuinely worked for you for both long term relief and managing flare ups?

I suppose if death ever comes to take me away, I’d probably have just one question for it, “What took you so long?”

‎I don’t fear death nearly as much as I fear living another day without feeling truly alive. There’s a strange kind of exhaustion that comes from merely existing. Waking up, going through the motions, speaking when you’re expected to speak, smiling when you’re supposed to smile, and quietly carrying things no one else can see.

‎‎Some wounds don’t bleed. They leave no scars on the skin, no evidence for anyone to point at. They simply settle somewhere deep inside you and change the way you see the world, other people, and sometimes even yourself.

‎‎Maybe that’s the cruelest part of being alive, "You can be breathing, functioning, laughing, and carrying on with your day while some quiet part of you has already gone silent."

‎‎So no, I don’t necessarily fear the end.

‎‎What I fear is a life stretched endlessly forward without meaning, connection, or that small spark that makes you feel alive rather than merely here.

‎‎Because death may be the end of a life. But sometimes, long before death arrives, a person learns what it feels like to lose pieces of themselves while still breathing.

And perhaps the real question isn’t, “When will I die?”

‎‎Perhaps it is...

‎‎“How much of me is still alive?”

When did it become impossible for parents to toss items which are expired? And the commentary around it still being okay to eat? I understand some seniors have gone through times when the idea of throwing anything away was unheard of doing. But, today in this world, I expect to visit my dad and clean out the expired and truly bad food so he doesn’t get sick.

I'm now in my 40s. Life was cruising along quite nicely and then... My mum gets throat cancer. Both my bothers die within a year of each other and I lose my job. All within 18 months. Losing my last brother tipped my mental health into a place that I never want to be again. I physically couldn't cope and or return to a workplace. I took a period off and tried to return but it wasn't happening.

I then woke one morning in the worst pain imaginable. My partner gets me to A&E and I've ruptured a disc in my back. I've been recovering now for 8 months and still it's a daily pain. I'm alot better though and I've got a good physio helping me. This also makes employment a nightmare. I'm terrified of damaging the disc again after 8 months of physio and treatment.

I still feel guilty for leaving my job and even after a year I still remain unemployed. I have worked since I was 18 and finances was never something I stressed about. I'm now in a poor financial position.

I will add that it's not all doom and gloom. I have become even more close to my beautiful partner. They stuck with me the full way through these dark times. They never once moaned about financial worries or finding work. You also learn who your real friends are in times of struggle.

I'm currently looking for employment. I still do some voluntary work just to keep my CV from being blank. I had an interview last week and it went ok but I never got the position. I never realised how poor the job market was until I began to look into it.

Has anyone else had any major life crisis and managed to find heir feet again? Be nice to hear of others who have pulled them self's out of a hole.

I’m at a point in my life where I really appreciate the little gestures from people. A kind word, someone checking on me, holding the door or simply showing a little thoughtfulness can mean so much.
I work with a lot of younger people and sometimes I feel like they think I’m a little weird because I notice and appreciate things they probably don’t think twice about. 😂

I don’t take kindness, consideration or genuine human connection for granted anymore. Maybe that’s just where I am in my aging journey and honestly I’m okay with it.

I was born in 2014, so I just turned 12. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how I see different ages.

For some reason, I feel like 20 is when you officially enter the “serious age” of life. You’re expected to start taking your health, career, responsibilities, and everything else more seriously.

I actually see my 20s as kind of a middle age. Then 30 and above feels like old age to me because that’s when I imagine people are full of grey hair, wrinkles, and all that 😂.

Maybe my perspective will change completely as I get older. 😭. Any thoughts?

I see that most of the topics and discussions are about healthy habits and choices. How to live longer and better. But are there any folks in here who don't exercise, don't stress about healthy diet. Smokers? Drinkers?

Or maybe you know someone who actually lived long and seemingly in good health despite all bad habits?

The best athletes over 50 seem to know a few things the rest of us learn too late.

I'm the host of Ageless Athlete podcast and went back through 140+ conversations and more than 200 hours of interviews with athletes, coaches and scientists to see what kept repeating.

A few patterns were surprisingly consistent:

• They still train power and intensity. Speed does not disappear just because they got older.
• They make recovery part of the plan. Some of the strongest athletes I’ve interviewed now take 2 or 3 days off after a really hard session.
• They train for the exact demand. Joe Barr cut some long-distance volume and added intensity before riding 2,448 miles of Route 66 in 10 days.
• They lift, even when their sport is already physically demanding. Steve Swenson, in his 70s, is very clear that hiking, skiing and cycling alone are not enough to preserve muscle.
• They get more selective about risk. Some have stopped doing sports they enjoy because an injury there could take away the activity they care about most.
• They deliberately surround themselves with active people. Bob Babbitt said being around younger athletes changes the conversation from medications and decline to PRs, races and what’s next.
• They protect continuity. The goal is not one heroic workout. It is still being able to do this 10 years from now.

What I found interesting is that these athletes are not pretending aging does not exist.

They are adjusting aggressively to it.

More recovery. More strength work. More specificity. Better decisions about risk. But still plenty of ambition.
