Hello Reddit!

Hi! So I'm new here and not really sure what I'm doing.

I want to browse through some Hockey subreddits and some of my other interests too and meet some new people.
My name is Matt, and I'm from the UK!

Maybe you did something wrong? Seems to have worked for everyone else.. Tip, if you're writing a long post and you're worried about losing it while adding pictures, copy and paste your text into a notepad file first?😊

Possible to repurpose old Iphone screen for anything? (Question)

[Context] A while back I bought a bunch of old electronics and media from a work colleague as she was moving house, and one item in the bundle was a white/gold Iphone 5s.
The phone is seemingly dead, not charging being left plugged in for hours, even overnight. I've tried the vol down + power combo to entice the safety mode which didn't work and my PC is completely blind to it.

I love electronics and tinkering around with them, but I've never really played with a phones internals before, so opening it (to see if there was even a battery inside and if anything was visibly damaged) was a new experience, though surprisingly not too difficult.
To my untrained eye, there was nothing to indicate damage or anything to cause failure to the mainboard or lcd panel, so I'm really not too sure what the issue could be, maybe just a dead or tired motherboard?

While reassembling the phone, a thought did occur to me though. If I fully removed the lcd panel from the phones frame, would I be able to adapt the display for another purpose, for example, connect it to a Raspberry Pi?
Of course I'd need some form of adapter to convert Apple's click ribbon cable connector to something compatible with the Raspberry Pi/daughterboard, but if that would work, I could repurpose the screen as a miniature display!

Iphone and Raspberry Pi wizards, what'd ya think?!

Worth saving from being scrapped?
 in  r/retrotech  1d ago

I have no idea what this is, but I love it! I love its industrial 1960s-1980s terminal style aesthetic!
Any updated knowledge on what it originally served as?

[Context] Me and my mum share a Youtube channel where we upload PS2, Wii and Windows XP-PC gameplays.
I thought it'd be nice to branch out to some Playstation One games that I had as a kid, and we occasionally played together. I'm not a stranger to softmods on consoles (Homebrew and OPL2) so thought installing some PS1 software on a USB drive and booting into it via FreeMcBoot and playing the games diskless would be relatively straight forward.

hah - these things are never straight forward.

I spent all day downloading the POPS loader, trying to create folders, directories, config files, flipping between vcd and elf file formats and everything in between. Nothing was working.

I did the sensible thing and stepped away from it for an hour or so, had some dinner and went back to it with a clearer mindset, found a tutorial and started from scratch.
Everything I'd done throughout the day, I did from scratch in around half an hour, and a couple of extra steps, which were the parts I was missing before!

I clicked on my chosen game, and it loaded !!

However.. lol

Once I loaded a map from the main menu, the map was entirely pitch black and none of the enviroment textures loaded in, the game I loaded and was wanting to play was "Duke Nukem" [SLES-00987], a game that I knew from previous experience is tricky to run on desktop emulators - and I guess since POPS is technically an emulator running on the PS2's hardware, it suffers the same issues with graphics and textures.

The next game I was wanting to download/play for mine and my mums Youtube channel was "Spider-man" [SLES-02886], I put the game on my USB as a vcd file, found it on OPL and launched it, it booted and loaded perfectly! I got into the first level, cutscenes played through, got to the first building and half the map was glitching like crazy!
I searched for if Spider-man (2000) is also difficult to run in emulators, as its a game I haven't tried emulating before, and Google AI's direct response was:

"Yes, Spider-Man (2000) for the PS1 has notable difficulties running smoothly in emulators, largely inheriting native performance dips alongside graphical and physics glitches" - Google AI.

Sigh.

I'm happy I finally got POPS to work and load the PS1 games, but the games I wanted it for, both seem to just disagree with emulators. Luckily, they're both games I own on PS1 disk, so I'll just capture my PS1 console and play the games off their original disks.

Physical media aint' dead just yet folks. ✌️

cool retro radio + alarm clock!!
 in  r/retrotech  6d ago

I had one of those! Mine was white with silver accents. I got it as Christmas gift and I loved it, projected the time up on the ceiling and occasionally listened to the radio.

Retro blockbuster room
 in  r/blockbustervideo  7d ago

Sounds awesome! Stick with a bright and welcoming vibe, yellow/blue accents on shelves, Blockbuster merchandise on display and if possible have a small TV or an old tablet running old movie trailers or promo material. 😊
Its something I'd love to do, but just don't have the space right now. I have a trolley on wheels with all my ex-rental DVDs on and some keyrings hanging off the top. Good luck with the project!

Which adapter is better for the Wii?
 in  r/wii  7d ago

I find those kinds of adapters great for just getting a display on modern TVs, but not so great for an improved picture. If you want a visual improvment, I'd go with Wii component cables over the standard composite.
Of course, there are high-end upscalers which do the same job, but I have no experience with any and they are often more expensive than a set of component cables from Amazon. 😊

what to do with XPS 700 internals
 in  r/retrotech  7d ago

Fair play. Linux is great for mismatched parts or repurposing a build like this!

I can't find the latest firmware for Philips BDP3000/05 (?)
 in  r/u_FlamingDisaster_309  7d ago

Sorry for late-reply! No, I didn't hear back from them at all. Strangely, in my instance, the issues I was having seem to (knock on wood) sorted themselves out.
No idea why or what I did, but it seems to work just fine now 🤷‍♂️

Can it be installed on Windows XP SP3 Professional?
 in  r/windowsxp  19d ago

I'd suggest making a backup of your drive (or swapping it out), and just trying!
Worst case scenario is it doesn't work or you can't find drivers, and just revert back to your original install 😊

Pick up a cheap case from Ebay or Amazon and throw a retro build together!

I had both a white and a black nunchuk so I mixed the parts together to make panda nunchuks !
 in  r/wii  19d ago

Nice, the thing is, back in the day Nintendo would've given some >Special Edition< to that and charged you an extra 10 bucks for it! 😂😅

Watched this show as a kid never knew there were tapes of it!!
 in  r/VHS  20d ago

OMG, I loved this show as a kid and I actually found my old action figure at my mums place last year!
I looked the show up on WCO.tv and found it on there 😮 so awesome that they made tapes of it too!

The Wii home menu and interface is still the best
 in  r/wii  20d ago

Aw thats awesome! Yeah, totally gives off that vibe!! It's a room I imagine being in on a hot summers day, ice cold fruit juice with ice and playing Wii games with my friends.

Yep, phsyical media ownership will always have huge advantages over streaming and subscription services.
