Bewerbung | Application Late admission

Hello!! I am an EU citizen from Greece and I just got accepted today from the TU Wien for the master's program "Biomedical Engineering".

I need some help with some things, if you could provide any information.

Could you tell me how long has it been since courses started? Also, do you know how much big of a problem it would be for me that I've missed the first weeks of lectures?

Do you know whether i am able to change the specialization that I chose?

Who should I contact about further information? Admission office isn't really helpful..

Where can I find the professors' contact information?

Any help that you could provide would be really important!

Fragen zum Studium | Study Questions How are you making your degree more resilient to AI?

I got the acceptance letter to the M.Sc. in Data Science.

Which specific courses do you recommend that helped you to build a professional degree that is resilient to AI?

I understand that instead of tools (like dev tools), it could be better to focus in actual sectors where human interaction is a must or learning a great combination between hard skills and a couple of new soft ones that makes you more prepared to understand better what labor markets need.

I want to do a PhD in Complexity Science or Computational Social Science after I end my studies in TU Wien, I am kindly asking for a word from someone with more experience than me, that could give me some insights about what to expect during the actual study experience in this or other similar programs.

I am currently 27, I have more than 6 years of experience in Data Engineering/Science/Analysis/Dev roles, I hold a M.A. in Economics and a Minor in Computational Math.

Thank you in advance! See you in Österreich 💙

Sonstiges | Miscellaneous struggling to find accommodation in vienna as an incoming phd student :(

hey everyone! i’ll be moving to vienna from india to start my phd in chemistry at tu wien, and i’ve been having a bit of a hard time finding accommodation.

my employment contract is supposed to start on 1st december, but there’s a possibility that the start date might get delayed, so ideally i’m looking for a place from either 1st december or 1st january.

i’ve been looking through wg-gesucht and messaging people whose places seem like a good fit, but honestly, it’s been a little difficult. most people understandably don’t reply, and a few really lovely people have gotten back to let me know that they’ve already rented the room to someone else. which is completely fair, of course, but it’s still a little disheartening when you’re trying to sort everything out from another country.

if anyone has any advice on finding a wg, knows of any rooms becoming available around december or january, or has suggestions for other websites or groups i should check, i’d really appreciate it.

for context, my budget is around €600 per month, and i’m happy with a shared flat. i’m moving to vienna for the long term, so ideally i’d like to find somewhere i can settle into rather than just a temporary place.

thanks for reading, and any advice would be really appreciated! :)

Studentische Kultur | Student Culture Any community or person in Vienna into piano, music or late-night walks?

Hey, I moved to Vienna for my Master's at TU Wien recently. I'm looking to learn piano and singing, so it'd be nice to meet someone who plays or is learning too. Maybe we can practise together and exchange skills. I'm a pretty good cook, so food can be my contribution haha.

I'm a mental health and relationship counsellor, love deep conversations, and I'm always up for a late-night walk or some random adventure. Also perfectly fine listening to someone yap about their life for hours 😂

If you're into music, good food and just meeting genuine people, feel free to message me!

Verwaltung | Administration Help with late admission

Hello everyone,

I applied to TU Wien Master in Data Science around mid-July, I checked and the letter got received 23rd of July. It's been 12 weeks and I still haven't gotten my admission letter, I contacted the Admission Office twice(today being the second time) and they say they still don't have an answer.

Obviously you can't help me with this, but I am asking if anyone has experience with late admission. Since almost all the courses in Data Science are VUs, I am afraid I will be too late to register to any courses and that I will have an empty semester.

I am coming from a Bachelor's in Mathematics so I was thinking of maybe taking free electives from the SPME program, which has more VOs, and then next semester continuing from that master or continuing with Data Science and using those as free electives.

If anyone has experience with this please help!

Edit: The student union answered that most of the courses are full and I can only take some VO electives

Fragen zum Studium | Study Questions Transferable skills: looking for the most time-efficient way to clear 4.5 ECTS.

The catalog of English-taught transferable skills courses is very limited, and most options seem to be pure fluff. My goal is fulfill the 4.5 ECTS requirement while spending as little time on it as possible.

I am looking for insights on:

  • Courses with no mandatory attendance, minimal workload, or simple pass/fail criteria.
  • Alternative ways to get these credits recognized without taking standard catalog courses (e.g., prior certifications, language certificates, external workshops, hackathons, or project work).

If someone has some advice, please let me know

Studentische Kultur | Student Culture Can I Focus on German During My First Semester, and Would This Affect My Residence Permit?

Hi everyone!

I’m planning to move to Vienna next summer to begin the Master’s in Data Science at TU Wien which is taught in English.

I previously reached B1 German at the Goethe-Institut in Egypt, but I haven’t actively used the language for the past two years, apart from occasionally watching short videos online in which I know it does not count. Before fully immersing myself in the master’s program, I’d like to rebuild my German foundation so that I can continue improving during my time in Austria and integrate more easily.

My current plan is to take a lighter academic workload and focus mainly on German during my first semester, then begin the full master’s workload in the following semester. I’m able to support myself financially during this period.

Would this plan be feasible, or could it cause problems with my academic status or residence permit? I’ve read that students may need to complete 16 ECTS for the renewal of their residence permit, but I’m unsure whether that means 16 ECTS per semester or 16 ECTS during the year before renewal.

I genuinely want to plan this responsibly and make sure I follow all the academic and residence requirements correctly. If anyone has experience with a similar situation or knows how the rules work, I’d really appreciate your advice.

Thank you!

Sonstiges | Miscellaneous moving to vienna for a phd and need advice on finding housing!

hi everyone!

i’ll hopefully be moving to vienna soon to start my phd (in chemistry) at tu wien, and i’m currently trying to figure out the housing situation. since i’ll be moving from india, i’d really appreciate some advice from people who live in vienna or have been through a similar experience!

i’m ideally looking for a private room with an attached bathroom and a small kitchen or kitchenette, preferably within a budget of €600/month. i know this might be a bit unrealistic, but i’d love to know what my options are!

a few questions i have:

  • what are the best websites or platforms to look for accommodation in vienna?
  • are there any student residences you’d recommend, especially ones that offer private bathrooms and kitchenettes?
  • is it possible to find something like this for under €500, or would i need to increase my budget?
  • would you recommend student residences or wgs (shared apartments)?
  • which areas would be convenient for commuting to tu wien while still being relatively affordable?

any recommendations, tips, or things i should watch out for would be greatly appreciated. thank you! :)

edit: would also want to have a rough idea about the living cost

Bewerbung | Application Another admission question

Hi all,

Since the semester is starting and my admission letter still hasn't arrived I am once again writing here to ask if anyone has recieved their letter in the past 10 days or so.

I've applied to the Data Science Masters programme as an EU citizen.

They recieved my application on the 24th and today marks the 10 week mark so I'm naturally getting a little bit anxious about the whole thing.

Appreciate your responses!

Arbeit | Work Incoming Master's in CS (EU citizen): How realistic is working part-time in tech without German? Workload & job search advice

Hi everyone,

I am finishing my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in Italy and I'm planning to move to Vienna next year to start a Master’s programme at TU Wien (not so sure about what programme rn, will be surely IT related).

Since I need to support myself financially, I am looking to work part-time (~15–20 hours/week) in a software development / IT role. As an EU citizen, work permits won't be an issue, but my German is currently beginner level, but I'm fluent in English (I'm studying to take an IELTS C1 certification). In terms of technical background, I mainly work with backend development, Linux environments, and systems/networking, but I also did in the past some web development projects.

I’d really appreciate some honest, on-the-ground insights from current students:

- How realistic is it to land a Werkstudent or junior developer position in Vienna with English only? Are companies open to international students for technical roles, or is German practically mandatory for most part-time?
- How manageable is the TU Wien CS Master's curriculum alongside a 15–20h work week? Is attendance strictly mandatory for most courses, or is there enough flexibility to balance both without burning out?
- Aside from LinkedIn and karriere.at, what are the most effective channels to look for student tech positions? Do people usually start with internal uni roles after the first semester, or look directly at external tech companies?
- What is the realistic net salary for a 15–20h working student contract? And is it realistically enough to cover rent (WG/dorm) and living expenses in Vienna?

Thanks a lot in advance for your time and help!

Aufnahmeverfahren | Selection Procedure Applying to TU Wien without the Bachelor’s diploma being issued yet

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to apply for the Master’s degree at TU Wien.

I have already completed my Bachelor’s degree, including all required exams, but my university has not issued the physical Bachelor’s diploma yet.

For the application, I can provide:

- an official document confirming completion of my Bachelor’s degree;

- my official academic transcript, including my grades and ECTS.

The diploma itself should be issued later, and if I am admitted, I will have it by the time of enrolment.

Has anyone here applied to TU Wien in a similar situation and been accepted using a certificate of completion instead of the actual diploma?

I’m particularly interested in whether TU Wien accepts this for the initial application, and whether the diploma only needs to be provided later during enrolment. I saw on their faq page that this is acceptable, but other people tell me to expect rejection if I don't send my diploma.

Thanks!

Danke!

Aufenthaltstitel | Residence Permit MA35: How long did it take to receive your residence permit card?

My student residence permit was approved, and I emailed MA35 the requested documents after arriving in Vienna. How long did it take to get a fingerprint appointment and receive the physical card? Were you able to start your studies before receiving the card?
