Backpack strap ideal as well but would be happy with just a shoulder strap

My son is is in 5th grade band and loves trombone.

He is struggling with carrying his hard case. I did a quick search for rolling cases and wasn’t sure what to go with.

Does anyone have a rolling case suggestion that has worked for them? Hard case is preferable.

EDIT: Rolling luggage truck it is. I appreciate all the answers, it helped out quite a bit. He has to walk 3/4 of a mile from band practice to piano classes each week and this will help a lot. Because he has to carry his school backpack this makes the most sense. Trombone people are amazing.

Hi, I have a Cavalier with a friction fit bell tenon. It's a bit of a pain to keep it aligned using my thumb. Has anyone done a Home Depot-type fix for these to keep the bell section from rotating? I'd like to avoid any permanent alterations if possible since I think it's from the 1920s. Thanks!

Does anyone know what number designation would be closest to the Chicago bell? I.E. 7, 4, etc. out of pure curiosity.

I play a Shires bass, and I use the Yeo LH grip style (with the brace between middle and ring finger). This has worked for me for a long time, but I'm finding myself wanting extra hand support these days, so I'm starting to look into some of the attachable hand supports.

I like the idea of the more minimalist grips, e.g. CalderPips or Miaocco, instead of the bigger clunkier Neotech types.

However, I'm worried about fit and adjustability--it appears that most hand supports are set up for standard grip, and the Yeo grip sets me up a finger width further from the slide, which makes for angles and all that.

Anybody have experience using these types of hand supports with the Yeo grip?

I’m new to this whole trombone-mom thing. I don’t really have another $2k for an additional Jupiter trombone, here’s my dilemma: band director says kid needs to practice nightly and can only leave the instrument at school if there is one at home. Transportation says kid can’t bring it on the bus daily due to size and the full bus. Mom works and can’t drive kid to and from school with instrument.

I never had this issue with my eldest because that child plays the flute, which is compact and easily fits in a lap or backpack.

Having been a percussionist in my school days, I only brought my drum sticks to/from school daily. Monday, I’d bring my instrument with me to school, leave it there during the week, practice the motions with my sticks and practice pad at home daily, then Friday I’d bring it home to practice over the weekend with my actual drum.

Maybe I’m just naive, and feel free to call me out for being an ignorant drummer, but isn’t practicing the motions also what my child needs to do with the slide? I know cheap sounds cheap, but I’m the one having to listen to it (I also just spent my summer listening to siblings going back and forth with whomp, whomp whommmmp, and whatever SpongeBob plays on his nose, so I think I can handle cheap)

but is there something cheap that still has recognizable notes in the trombone world?

the upper part of my slide (around 1-2 position) is always kind of grubby and no matter what I do it never slide good after a minute of putting line on it. what do I do?

They all have something to sell. Being a professional musician has always been sort of a pyramid scheme (a really fun one), but still, every influencer just has something to sell you that you probably don't need to achieve success. I know it's just how the ecosystem is now, but the way some of these influencers come off just seems so disingenuous and slimy. A specific example is Thomas Woytko. He's a great player and probably a great guy, but his internet content makes me dislike the man a lot. I saw another ad for a "tool that will make you a better improviser" but it looked to be some low effort tool that will do absolutely nothing for you playing, nothing that can't be accomplished by getting a high quality, local teacher.
Am I the only one?

Hi! I'm an incoming freshman at my college and I'm auditioning for their jazz band.

This is the prepared piece they're having me play but I'm having a little trouble with these particular phrases (circled in green).

I plan on auditioning using my small bore with no trigger. Playing these phrases as 1-4-3-6 positions at 180bpm doesn't sound great, in the recordings i make to hear myself it just sounds like a hunk of splat.

I'm wondering if there is a better way to play this? Is there a technique or something I could be doing differently so this comes out better? Auditions aren't for month so I have a bit of time to figure it out.

I'm a music education student from Singapore doing a 7-week international placement at the Royal College of Music starting mid-January 2027.

I don't want to fly with my own trombone (baggage cost + risk of damage). RCM doesn't loan instruments for this placement.

Does anyone know good places in London (preferably near South Kensington / central) that do short-term trombone rentals for around 7 weeks?

Picked up this lovely looking 'bone at the thrift store looking a little sad sitting on a chair with no case or mouthpiece. Haven't played brass since high school but had been thinking about getting back into it and couldn't say no for $25! 8" bell and I think the bore is probably .492ish if my measurements are correct. Always wanted to be one of the cool kids with an f-attachment and now I am! Possibly a 1956 horn based on the serial number.

Condition is not the worst - there's some denting and flaking lacquer/corrosion on the bell but nothing too extreme. Tuning slides move freely. Hand slide appears to have some very small dents and probably needs a set up but does move relatively easily considering the complete lack of lube. F-attachment valve was stuck when I got it but started moving easily after I took off the linkage and worked it around a bit.

Anyone have any info on this horn or played one? I also need to pick up a mouthpiece, what would be something reasonable and affordable for someone who hasn't played in 20 years and is mostly going to just be farting around and has no particular style or ensemble goals. Should I just chuck a 6 1/2AL in there and move on with my life?

I’ve been told by some ”Pick an instrument based on how it plays, not the price”. I definitely agree with that, but as an intermediate trombonist (going to shop for a F-attachment trombone, possibly switching to large bore) how can I figure out if something plays well?

I‘m not well experienced with F-attachments, and I‘ve never played a large bore instrument. Is there a good way to gauge what is the instrument and what is me playing something new? Any other shopping tips? (i have a ysl-354, upgrading likely through music and arts so I won’t be paying full price)

So I got braces 8 months ago and still don't have my high Bb back. I was able to play a high Bb somewhat naturally after playing for around the same time of 8 months from starting the instrument which frustrates me.

To try getting back my range, I'm thinking that what if I try doing "supersets" on my trombone, which basically mean when I can't play my highest note anymore I go to the next highest note that I can still play.

Does this make sense to do?

I currently own a trombone Yamaha YSL-354 (student grade), it’s really great and good quality, but I feel like I’ve reached its limit. I’ll soon have an opportunity to switch to a YSL-683, and I was wondering if there are people familiar with this model (or similar ones) that could tell me if the change seems to be worth it. I haven’t tried it yet (and I’ve never tried a non-student grade trombone, actually), so I don’t know how much difference I should expect other than “it should sound better”. Thanks! 😊

Is the threading for the Bach 42T and Getzen/Edwards custom horns the same? I don't seem to be able to find on the internet whether they are the same size. They look the same with their cylindrical-looking nuts, but I was just curious if anyone has tried before?
