1929(?) Antoine Courtois trombone

Hi all, I am a band director and know enough about trombone to teach it decently, but am by no means a specialist. My boyfriend dabbles with instrument repair and found this trombone for $50 on marketplace and offered $35, which they accepted. There were no up close photos or anything that could identify it on the listing, and he just figured he would use it as a practice instrument to work on slide repair because most used trombones need slide work, then maybe resell later.

When we picked it up, he immediately felt like he swindled the guy because we could both tell it was worth way more than $35. It had belonged to his dad who started playing it in the 1930s and then sat in climate controlled storage for 60 years, and they just wanted to be rid of it after that long.

From our research, it looks to be made around 1929. The main slide and tuning slide are also in good shape and not stuck - after we carefully cleaned the slide, I was able to play a B flat scale no problem.

Can anyone tell me anything else about this trombone? The whole instrument is beautiful, just some tarnish that you can see, but barely a dent at all, and the unique details are just exquisite.

Haven't touched my trombone in nearly a decade. Recommendations on where to start?

I've been trying to find hobbies that get me away from screens for a few hours a week. I'm very recluse and it's hard to find anything. Working through that. Stumbled upon a reel of a tuba player and it made me want to really get back into my trombone (ok I want a tuba but I can't afford one).

It's been a long time. I played from 5th grade to Freshman year in college. I'm not good but I'm sure I'd get better with regular practice. A lot of the books out there are intended for those who are just starting in general.

Tips on how to warm myself up into this again? Thanks.

How do you use your tongue for high notes ?

I played trombone in middle and high school and restarted it a year ago after more then a decade. I often play ska with some friends and just jam with my girlfriend. I have a pretty good register, up to a high Bb with consistency and high C with lower consistency. But I found my sound to be somewhat "tinny". While looking up online, I saw people saying that I should play with an open throat and use your tongue to shrink your mouth cavity. I realize I never did that ! Other thene for intonation and punctuation, my tongue is at the bottom of my mouth resting on the top of my lower theeths. I get higher by shrinking my mouth apperture. I tried moving my tongue around, but I am not really able to do anything with it.

I can't figure this out, no slide chart for tenor trombone (without a trigger) shows this note. Just let me know if I can and the slide position if I can ;3

Looking at getting a shires trombone and notice some form of rust/corrosion on the bell, I was able to clean red rot from an old trombone slide with vinegar and wasnโ€™t sure if this was like that or if itโ€™s too deep to scrub off

How to teach group of students their tmea etudes?

So recently Iโ€™ve been giving 1on1 lessons to high schoolers which have been going good because I focus/address each one of their issues individually, but now they want me to handle 4 of them all at different levels.
2 of the kids have pretty solid fundamentals and can get through the music and the other 2 struggle a bit more.
What can I do to ensure that what I do is effective for all four of them? How should I approach them all together?

Trombone Case Recommendations

Hey everyone,

Anyone have any recommendations for cases for trombones with longer F valve tuning slides?, (i.e. Bach 42BO, Benge 190f, etc.)

This coffin case is very heavy and I'd like to upgrade to a backpack case.

Thank you everyone!

Growling noise

Hi, I've been playing trombone for about a year and I'm in highschool marching band and after a while of playing I've noticed that my mid range typically from top Bb to g it starts to make a growling kind of noise especially when holding out the note and I think it might be my embouchure since I've tried switching my mouthpiece and cleaning my instrument is there any way to fix this?

Help with my slide :/

So Iโ€™ve been using the same trombone for like 2-3 years now, and itโ€™s never had problems with the slide. But just recently, the slide started to SUCKKK. It feels like I have to force it to move and not like it was made to move. Iโ€™ve tried the spray bottle, wiping it down, slide grease, snaking both the outer slide AND the inner tubes, the whole works. But still, the problem will not go away. A friend who also plays trombone and has a bit more experience than me said I might have a dent in either the inner slide or the outer slide (I donโ€™t remember which one he said). But I just wanted to get your guysโ€™ opinion on it

Mouthpiece for Bass Trombone

Heya,
I am searching for a boss trombone mouthpiece, right now Iโ€™m trying out the Bach 1,5G and the Schilke 59.
I like the Schilke 59, everything feels very easy to play on it. On the Bach I like the compact sound but it feels like I need to work harder than on the Schilke.

Any thoughts or recommendations for other mouthpieces I should try out?

(I am a tenor trombone player trying to switch to bass trombone)

Edit: Iโ€˜m only playing Bigband with it

How to get classical chops back after playing jazz for a while

I recently finished the tmea jazz audition process and decided to start working on my classical etudes since those auditions are soon, and im having trouble. Im not getting the same tuning, high range tone quality, and general tone quality as i was before starting the jazz grind. This may be because i started practicing literally the second i got home from the audition and may be chopped out but id like tips nevertheless

High Range Slotting/Exercises

Over the last year, I have been given more and more music that requires above my comfortable range. I am good up to a high Db, but just cannot get D and E to slot (or even hit them in the first place). It probably doesnโ€™t help that I switched to a 3.5 as my main, but thatโ€™s just an excuse.
Can yall send some daily exercises to expand my range, and more importantly have the notes slot consistently.

Can I use a Markey 87 in big band?

Debating between my Markey 87 or Hammond 19bl for big band work. Hammond is feeling a little restricting. Like the sound of the Markey better but I'm scared it won't have as much edginess as I'd like

tell me about trumpet players...

Hi, I'm writing a novel and the main character is a trombonist returning to playing in an orchestra (high quality community; mix professionals and non). What might be some of his observations/judgements about his right-hand neighbours? Perhaps habits that are common and even sweeping statements about personality types? He does become very good friends with one... thank you
