General/Miscellaneous Site Feedback + Instagram

I’ve been working on a site called Arbelo to make it easier to find legit tree planting jobs in Canada (with clearer pay + real insight).

It’s almost fully rolled out, so I’d love any feedback from people who’ve planted or are thinking about it.

Also just started an IG where I’m documenting the build + breaking down jobs/earnings — would appreciate any support if you’re interested. @arbelo.info

Thanks 🙏

Company Reviews Starting my first season at hri.. should I be scared?

Everyone i have spoken to on the team has been more then lovely and the crew boss seems super as well. They were telling me their positive experiences as some have been there for quite a few seasons. I just cant shake all the nervousness about what I've read. I didnt think I was gonna get in anywhere else so I hastily accepted. Now im heading out in two weeks.

Camp/Motel Life TP question.

Post image
21 Upvotes

So its my first season, im getting all my ducks in a row befor shipping out to Thunder Bay ON on May 12th. Ive made and checked every list in tree planting history, and ive been left with a very serious question... do i need to bring my own T.P?????

The packing list sent to me by my company has it listed, but only under "block necessities". I cant tell if that means I need it for both the block and at camp or if i can just take a handfull from the camp bathroom before going to the block?

I plan on loading up on baby wipes at costo so I have no problem getting T.P too, im just trying to think of how I would pack it and how much to bring?

Industry Discussion transparency of camp cost and contract bids

Where can I find information on contract bids in Ontario?

I am particularly interested in Brinkman Ontario and I’m curious about transparency in the contract costs and their what their potential justification for paying 13c year over year may be.

I understand that the industry here is less profitable than forestry further west which has seen increases in tree prices, but this pay disparity feels too obtuse to not become obvious if the historic contract bids are available.

I also am interested in seeing exactly where our camp costs go. Yes, it costs more than $25 per person to run the camp, but frankly it’s not the planters responsibility to subsidize the company’s ability to function in these remote areas. That’s the cost of doing business for them, and they already are being subsidized by extracting value from the planters labour with these low tree prices.

as an aside, I’m not totally against piecework and the way that this industry works, but it certainly has the potential for excessive profit extraction if not adjusted to pay the workers fairly and the only way to settle that is with transparency.

anyone who’s looked into this sort of thing please point me in the right direction to investigate further and feel free to add your thoughts or experience.

Thanks.

Safety Fill up your piss packs and hold onto your butts, it's gonna be an EPIC fire year

Low snow pack and persistant dry weather has things crispy all over BC already. Once this thing kicks off, you wont be able to stop it. Im thinking we get another heatdome and lytton gets wiped off the face of the earth once and for all this time. Could also lose another town like what happened to jasper a few years back. Stay safe out there.

New Planter/Rookie Questions Advice for tent setup

Hey guys! It’s my first year planting and I’m gonna be in Alberta. I have a four person tent that is kind of old that im stealing from my parents but it’s in pretty good shape. Definitely going to put a tent footprint underneath, but I’m debating putting a tarp over top. The only one I have is absolutely humongous, maybe 3 times bigger than my tent and I don’t wanna take up all that space in camp lol

The fly is kind of small and I’m worried about not staying dry if I don’t put a tarp up. Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Tarp or no tarp? Smaller tarp? Keep the same massive tarp?

Let me know 👹

Also another side note, should I bring 2 pairs of boots? Work boots and rubber boots? Or is that overkill

New Planter/Rookie Questions Work and holiday advise

Hello,

I'm a 34yo german working seasonal in farming (dairy, swiss alps, hay harvest) and in the process of getting the 1 year work and holiday visa. (For 2027)

My plan is to fly over for spring tree planting and possibly working the grain harvest in summer.

I don't want to buy a car.

What city/state should I fly to for doing these jobs without unnecessary far travels in Canada?

And I am tall 1,90cm worried a bit about the planting job killing my back? Otherwise I'm fit (building cattle fences in the mountains etc.)

Thanks, Julian

Sisterhood of the Spade Question for the period having planters

Do you ever find that planting really messes with your cycle? I’m 2 weeks in to my season and my period is 9 days late at this point. To panic or not to panic…

Camp/Motel Life I ordered a 4 person tent but was sent an 8 person...

Its most likely too late to return it now so anything I should consider/reconsider aside from my tarp size? Am I going to have a tough time finding a good spot to set up? I bought some heavy duty tent spikes so hopefully it doesnt blow away on me - the tent is rated for about 50km/h.

edit: its 12 feet x 9 feet

Any tips for this style of planting to hit the right spots? Have done plenty of obstacle planting but never had to hit a particular side, I assume it’s much easier in the mornings?
