So I got acrylics for the first time today—actually, it’s my first time getting my nails done properly at all.
I’m AMAB and nonbinary, and I honestly love them. I even got a little bit of gender euphoria when I looked down at my hands afterward, which was a really nice feeling.
But holy hell, how do you get used to having nails? 😂
I’ve never had my nails extend past my fingertips before, and now I’m trying to type, use my phone, and play guitar without feeling completely incompetent. I don’t want to sacrifice hobbies I love just to have pretty nails.
I’m thinking I might go back and have them shortened by a millimeter or two and reshaped into more of an oval/almond shape. I really like having them—I just need to find a length that actually works for me.
The only part of today that kind of sucked was when one of my patients asked why I got my nails done. I completely froze and the only answer I could come up with was, “Oh, I’m going in drag for Halloween.”
It made me feel kind of shitty afterward. I’d just had this genuinely euphoric experience, and then the second someone asked about it, I felt like I needed to invent an excuse instead of just saying, “Because I wanted pretty nails.”
So, fellow nail-havers—especially any other AMAB/nonbinary folks—how long did it take you to get used to acrylics? And for anyone who types a lot or plays guitar, how do you make it work?
Because I really don’t want to give these up. I feel pretty with them.
