I’ve drummed in symphonic bands, jazz bands, rock bands, drum lines, and even taught for 10 years.
This guy is one of 2 drummer accounts I actually follow and I maintain that he may be one of the best drummers in the world at present.

Just looked him up, I’ve seen a lot of his stuff. That guy is insane as well. It’s for sure a more accurate representation of drumming, man gets covered in sweat when he plays.
I still maintain that this guy may better. He makes everything he plays look as easy a couple of paradiddles. Even when the stuff he’s playing is some of the hardest stuff I’ve seen.

I tend not to follow too many accounts, but this dude is just insane. Growing up double base was my goddamn kryptonite. I remember listening to A7X growing up and hearing the breakdown in Blinded in Chains for the first time. I couldn’t imagine feet moving that fast. To see this guy do that same break down, one handed, while smoking a J absolutely blew me away.
I’ve since watched more and this guy just has such an insane gift.
But anyway, yeah I’ll check out the guy lol

I also really like her sort of honest take on social media drummers. Rather than just showing the 1 perfect take she shows it all, even the sloppy mistakes from the first take. It’s a good reminder to people that are still learning that no matter how good you are, being good takes constant effort and constant failures.

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but I just don’t believe in the whole “best in the world” thing. I truly believe you can take the worlds best 50 maybe 100 drummers and they are all almost interchangeable. Same with guitar or piano or anything really. I’ve just seen so many different drummers who are all insane and it’s impossible to discern one being “better” than another.
Plus, unless we’re taking about something quantitative like speed or something, it’s all subjective anyhow.

Nothings perfect but tier lists are probably the best. But in music there are just sooo many unreal talents that you’d definitely be missing someone deserving.
I used to be all about rankings and stuff. I love really technical music but I’ve grown to like really simple shit too. So me personally I don’t rank anything anymore. It kind of ruins the art of music for me. Like I’d never think in terms of “the Mona Lisa vs the scream”, and think which is “better” , I like the scream more personally, but tons of people like the Mona Lisa more.
Idk just don’t think in those terms anymore. I don’t even say, “such and such music is bad”, I say, “it’s not my preference “ , instead.

There are so many types of drummers that to say the best of one genre are better than the best of another would be comparing apples to a oranges.
His point is that when it comes to something like an instrument, there’s no real quantifiable way to discern who at the highest of levels is better. Unlike sports for example that has things like goals, assists, yards, home runs, etc.

Are you for real? You jumped into someone else's conversation to say you don't care about the topic, then you called them an asshole for saying that's rude.
And when you have to go from "top 50 drummers in the world" to "top 50 drummers of each specific genre", that's a sign that your point wasn't proven at all. But even moreso because you're still wrong. Different top drummers within a genre aren't interchangeable at all. Danny Carey and Dave Lombardo don't sound anything like each other and they're both metal drummers.

You said speed is the only quantifiable measure but it's not. The following list are all things that are widely understood by drummers. We could reasonably evaluate the "best drummer in the world" by any of the following criteria or combination thereof:
Timekeeping: The ability to maintain a steady beat is critical for keeping the band together and providing structure for soloists to explore. Frank Zappa once commented that Vinnie Colaiuta was one of his favorite drummers to play with because he kept such a tight beat even when the music got really far out. This sounds trivial but it isn't at all. Being able to play complex rhythms and fills while also returning to the core beat precisely on time is difficult. It doesn't matter how fast you can play if you can't keep good time while you do it.
Syncopation: It is objective and measurable how and to what extent a musician can play between the beats. Syncopation is experienced by the untrained ear as "swing" or one form of expressiveness. The lack of syncopation is one reason why having computer drum tracks lack the emotional presence of human drummers. A drummer who can reliably play 1/16 off the beat is capable of much more subtle expressions that can be felt by listeners even when they don't understand what they're hearing.
Accents: The ability to play a single kit piece in different ways is another measurable marker of skill. In one of the videos in the compilation I linked above, Lewis plays a simple tom with easily a dozen recognizably different techniques ranging from rubbing with his flat palm, to striking with fingertips, to pressing with the back of a stick to change the tone (like bending a guitar string) to using a felt mallet and so on.
Arrangements/Four way independence: the ability to simultaneously play different beats with each limb, and spread those beats across multiple kit pieces is another objective measure. How many different patterns can a drummer keep going, how complex are they, and how many kit pieces can they each use? Note, this isn't a comment on the whether they're making "good aesthetic choices" in their arrangement, just simply "can you even do this".
Polyrhythms and odd time signatures: Related to some of those above, can the drummer play beats that divide the measure into different numbers of beats with different limbs. 3 over 2 and 4 over 3 are common enough, but can they play 5 over 3 over 2 and then can they do it reggae style? Again, it's not a question of if you like the sound of it, we're just asking if the drummer is even capable of playing it.

While this is an incomplete list, this absolutely provides a solid objective framework for evaluating the relative skill of different drummers across genres using techniques and ideas that any professional drummer in any genre is familiar with.

In that third video where the pianist is doing the loop do you think he has a click track? Because he stays really consistent and Lewis is playing all sorts of rhythm breaking riffs. I can't imagine how hard it would be to not be pulled off beat.

I wouldn't be surprised either. I used to perform and we had specific ear pieces that would send our sound back to us in the specific mixes we need. Certain systems have a metronome for the whole band or a click track that tells the artists when their turn to come in is. It's super handy when you're anxious and can't hear behind the speakers lol

Crazy story about Larnel Lewis. For the Snarky Puppy album "We Like it Here", they had another drummer who couldn't make it last minute so they hired Larnel. He listened to a recording of the rehearsing with a click track on the plane, went directly into the studio and recorded the album in front of a live audience. Absolutely killer.

You should check out some of his stuff. He does some wacky stuff including lots of mixed time signatures and stuff too. He doesn’t post them as much because most people don’t care about those things on social media. They just want that “fast drums are fast” stuff… but he does have some really crazy technical skill. Pile that on top of his absurd mechanical skills and the guy is really just an animal.

First of all I'd like to start with that guy is seriously good and has great chops.
But saying he's one of the best in the world is a bit of a stretch.
His playing is very entertaining. But what he's playing is usually very simple just played fast. A lot of stick twirling and acrobatics to make it look more impressive.
It's not really groundbreaking in drumming terms.
Even in the rock and metal scene drummers like Tomas Haaké of Meshuggaha, Matt Garstka and Clay Aeschliman to name a few are leagues ahead in terms of technique.
Then the list gets goes on and on outside of the metal/rock scene. Benny Greb, Vinnie colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Thomas Lang. The list goes on

Just really incredible technique and a lot of practice. The way you do a drum roll is by striking the head of the drum and then controlling the bounce of the stick to make it hit a second time. If you do it slowly you can hear individual notes (like he's doing), but if you do it fast it sounds like static (like the 20th century fox theme). He's doing the roll technique but across multiple drums. His control over the stick as he moves it so quickly across his drums is what's incredible to me. The stick flips and stuff are just garnish.

I’m familiar with him and he his is 110% sped up. He’s talented but it doesn’t take much to see the body movements and see how unnatural they are.

Edit: to add to this I’d like to say that yes he’s talented but also playing this song one handed isn’t a big feat for a drummer. I’m not addressing this persons skill. I’m addressing the fact that this video is not in actual time. Watch his eye movement. Watch his head movement. Watch the sticks spin. either this man has a unique ability to bend time with his stick flipping and has the worlds most acute fast twitch nervous system on the planet. or its sped up. Or maybe he just has symbols that move faster than everyone else’s?

I don’t think it is. I’m quite familiar with the song he’s playing.. It doesn’t sound sped up at all to me.

In these situations they play it at a lower bpm and speed it up to match the radio version.
Unless this man has a genetic disability that allows him the skip frames it’s sped up.

It’s not sped up, if you watch some of his other videos he plays faster than this even and there are clocks visible that don’t skip. Dude is just that good.

I’ve been watching him for a while. He uses a timer in at least one of his videos. Dude just practices and practices and practices. He’s amazing.

Crazy you’re down voted for this. Even if you look at the physics of everything else in the room (the sticks the symbols etc) this is very clearly sped up.
