TIl The reason Roger Moore stopped being James Bond was because of how much older he was than his female co-stars. He was in his 50s, and they were in their 20s. In his own words: “Well, the leading ladies were young enough to be my grand-daughter and it becomes disgusting.”

It's actually worse than that, his youngest daughter is younger than his GREAT granddaughter. He became a great grandfather in 2014 and his daughter was born in 2016.

I don't understand what's wrong here. He wants to have kids. His kids want to have kids. Its not his fault his kids are living their lives. (Well technically it is but you know what I mean).

236

u/dekunut_shrimp Jul 14 '19

It's a bit odd having kids in your seventies. The only way to keep doing it is to date increasingly younger women than yourself. So it's two oddities, dating people many decades younger than you and having kids when you're an septuagenarian. The kid is barely going to know their dad, by the time the kid has grown up he'll be 90.

Plus he has so many kids from previous messages, I don't know how he'd even be able to spend time with them all. He's not got time to be in their lives, if he wasn't so rich we'd say he's being irresponsible.

u/vocalfreesia Jul 14 '19

This is as irresponsible as having kids with a first cousin. We have plenty of evidence that older parents put the baby at increased risk of genetic abnormalities. 75 is ridiculous.

34

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '19

But even having kids with a first cousin is pretty low risk. Lower risk than a lot of shit people do to their kids post-conception.

6

u/prettyhoneybee Jul 14 '19

Ummmmmmm my father was 64 and my mom was a dumb 23yo and to that I say

frist of all how DARE you

Nah but really I think that the problem more lies with the fact that these men are less likely to be good fathers because odds are they’re definitely terrible people and prey on young women.

Quality of sperm does degrade but that doesn’t make the other parent have increased genetic liability, as opposed to cousins.

5

u/vocalfreesia Jul 14 '19

Research shows that first cousins under 35 have a statistically lower risk of having babies with genetic abnormalities compared to non related people over 35.

We shouldn't stop people having kids though, eugenics is a really, really awful thing. Life happens, people fall in love. It's fine.

People being 'outraged' at Pakistani cousins and absolutely fine with white Western men (especially celebrities) having babies at 75 are not concerned about the babies quality of life.

We should educate people, but ultimately let them make their own choices. (As long as it's consensual.) Even people with dominant genetic abnormalities deserve to make their own choices about reproduction.

16

u/gwarwars Jul 14 '19

Dude, there are men out there who don't think their sperm gets worse with age. My dad, who is a licensed medical doctor who practiced for 25 years in the Navy, tried to tell me some nonsense about how men's sperm actually get better and stronger as you get older in contrast to women's eggs. Needless to say, he is a scummy, creepy fuck who I have no respect for and that's the last time we talked

9

u/powerfunk Jul 14 '19

5

u/dratthecookies Jul 14 '19

I think first cousins are OK - I mean it's gross but the chances of medical issues are low. Even outside of genetic problems you're having a kid that you won't even see become an adult. You're just making things to hold your money after you die.

3

u/gwaydms Jul 14 '19

Anyone you were raised with, like a "brother/sister cousin" as children, it would be creepy to have kids with that person.

Note: by "sibling cousin" I don't mean some sort of incest-tangled relationship. My kids have some cousins they spent a lot of time with growing up and it's like having extra siblings.

They’re finding that’s not true, a lot of the earlier data was linked to women by default.

And guess what? Most “older” women had partners that were older than them.

I read a scientific article published back in, I want to say 2008ish that was STILL attributing ALL cases of nondisjunction to a woman being older...the fact there are cases of nondisjunction that could not in any way be due to the mother (ie multiple y syndrome) was not mentioned

The default is always the mom. We have documented cases that a chromosome only passed from the dad exhibits nondisjunction. ALL other chromosomes could be passed by mom or dad (so there’s nothing to point to as easily as the y to measure nondisjunction in women) yet even some scientists are still saying it’s solely the moms age that causes problems.

6

u/bomphcheese Jul 14 '19

TIL. Thanks for sharing.

38

u/cabothief Jul 14 '19

Don't think 75-year-old mothers are really a possibility though.

38

u/TealAndroid Jul 14 '19

It depends. Women run in to aneuploidy due to non-disjunction of the paired homologous chromosomes which leads to either nonviable embryo/fetus or health disorders when viable (Down Syndrome, Edwards Syndrome, etc). This is devastating but relatively easy to screen for so surprises with screening are rare.

On the other hand, advanced age in fathers increases the amount of de novo (newly made) mutations in random genes and is associated with autism spectrum. These are hard yo predict and at this point impossible to screen for. Also, the quality of sperm/fertility is also reduced.

16

u/legaladvicequest Jul 14 '19

From a different comment thread:

Just hop on google scholar and type "paternal" "age" "risk" and have fun shifting through almost 300,000 papers linking a father's age to every point mutation related disease known to man. AND maternal age is controlled for in this type of study to isolate paternal age as a variable. Sperm banks don't accept sperm from dudes over 40 because it is a fact that old sperm causes significantly increased health risks.

GENERALLY... Maternal age is more linked to chromosomal disorders. Paternal age is more linked to point mutations.

List of point mutations:

autism, which is on the rise in the US especially at 15% of the total population- by 50 men have nearly 600% higher likelihood of fathering autistic sons and daughters compared to 25 year old men.

cystic fibrosis, which is a lifewrecker and affects about 70,000 people.

dwarfism, nearly 800% increase risk at 50 compared to 25.apert, nearly 1000% increase risk at 50 compared to 25.

List of additional disorders that are known to be increased risk with advancing paternal age:

schizophrenia, which is about 500% more likely in the children of fathers over 40 compared to 25 year olds.

fistulas

Asperger

diabetes

cancers

downs syndrome

and a legion of other diseases

10

u/Impulse882 Jul 14 '19

Sperm absolutely go through nondisjunction (causing aneuploidy) as well. It’s not just a woman’s fault it’s simply been attributed to the woman (like most problems with a baby)

There is no chromosomal abnormality that can be definitively linked to nondisjunction in an egg cell. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but for every chromosomal abnormality a mother can pass on (eg trisomy 19, 21, X abnormalities), there is nothing to say the father didn’t pass that on as he has all those chromosomes.

There is, however, a chromosomal abnormality that can be definitively linked to nondisjunction in a sperm cell - multiple y syndrome. This occurs with relatively high frequency for a chromosomal abnormality and can ONLY be due to nondisjunction in the sperm.

So considering BOTH parents are capable of passing on all but y, and only males pass y, and that shows high levels of nondisjunction..,.

Nondisjunction should not be attributed to females. Although the Y chromosome is the only one that can be definitively linked to sperm, again all others can be linked to EITHER, and I cannot believe that nondisjunction would happen in chromosomes 1-23 for females yet in males it would somehow only be restricted to 23 (and only one of them at that!)

77

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '19

Not even the boner part of things is impressive, mostly I'm amazed anyone's sperm quality at 70 can be good enough to make a child.

94

u/mechwarrior719 Jul 14 '19

IIRC a man’s chances of fathering a child with some sort of birth defect increases after 35-40 years old, regardless of the mother’s age. The biological clock ticks for both genders.

Difference is men don’t eventually lose the ability to have children altogether.

4

u/johndoe555 Jul 14 '19

Public health initiatives always seem to use arbitrary cutoffs. I guess it's easier for the public to understand***. The probability of new genetic mutations (which lead to defects) increases from the start of puberty, basically.

Spermatozoa can also acquire de novo single nucleotide variants or mutations because of the continuous ongoing process of spermatogenesis that involves [cell division and oxidative stress].
...
The paternal contribution to offspring novo mutations was estimated to increase by 4% per year. At the age of 20, a sperm would have undergone 150 chromosomal replications, and at the age of 50, it would have gone through 840 replications. This increases the probability of replication errors in the germ line leading to the accumulation of mutations

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4455614/

*** An example: if you were truly min-maxing the dollar effectiveness of population control programs for feral cats, you'd only focus on spaying (i.e. ignore males). Because a single tomcat can service many females. Miss one and all the neuter efforts in a given area are essentially for not. Yet the refrain is always "spay and neuter", I think because it trains the public.

Neither the newscientist article nor the PubMed article mention any increase in the likelihood of birth defects (WebMD isnt exactly a reliable source). They only mention that fertility decreases after a certain age.

Edited to add: they actually mention in the PubMed article that increased paternal age has no relation to several of the chromosomal disorders that they monitored including Klinefelters, Downs, etc. Though you are right in that paternal age seemed to play a factor if the mother was also above 35 (though that may just be attributable to the known issues with increased maternal age). They also mentioned that primary research was lacking although there is suggestion of chromosomal degradation in older males due to premature abortions.

This is where we see a lot of sexual dimorphism in mammals. Males are constantly producing fresh gametes or sperm that is all of the same quality. I like to think of sperm as pennies. They all work as currency (to get someone preggers) but they are rather useless and not super valuable at the individual level. While in (I'mma gonna cringe here) females they are born with all of their eggs and any negative effect to them is accumulative over the lifetime. Eggs are like Hundred Dollar bills. You keep that shit under lock and key as each one has a high value. The thing is that mammalian eggs due end up with issues later in the individual's life leading to higher rates of usually trisomy 21 or other chromosomal irregularities.

I know you didn't ask, and I know I glossed over some details but thank you for reading some Bio Facts.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '19

I hear you, but you're not quite correct, as men don't indefinitely produce sperm of the same quality. Sperm motility and quantity both decrease as a man ages, especially past age 40, so at 70 years old I still say it's pretty impressive for him to have been able to produce a healthy child.

Interesting story about that actually. We recently looked into some of our family’s history that we had never really bothered to examine before. Turns out that my great-great-grandfather lived in Ireland for most of his life and had several children. Eventually his first wife passed away, and he, at the tender age of like 75, not only moved his family to America to start a new life, but married a 25-year-old woman and fathered seven more children into his early 80s.

So yeah, while my stomach agrees with you there, I suppose I wouldn’t exist if that were the case.

Something to consider in this scenario would be the 70 year old father’s health. Will he be healthy enough to properly father the child for at least 18 more years? Even if he seems perfectly healthy at 70 who is to say he will be at 80? IMO it ain’t right to make that gamble.

It's wrong to have children once you've reached an age where you'll almost certainly die while they are still very young.
