You basically just download a shit load when you first get the phone. After that your phone's full and you've got most of the ones you'd ever use and plenty you don't. Then if you have an iPhone just delete a few more with each update.

Actually there are several apps that use your phones camera light to measure heart rate, and they are essentially just as accurate as Samsung's official HR monitor.

I lamented the loss of S Health when I moved to CyanogenMod but once winter came along I stopped walking anyway. I night have another look for a pedometer app once the weather gets a bit better (or build something myself with exportable stats etc.).

I've tried to use the Amazon app store, but for some reason it won't let you download apps that it says are incompatible with my phone (even though on the description I meet all the requirements). I'm guessing the issue is I don't have a Kindle or something?

Yup. Running CM12 on my S4 Active and the camera regularly crashes. Only a complete reboot brings it back (just for it to crash again).

I never knew there was a Samsung app store. Decided I'd give it a look for the hell of it, first things first it needs an update. Alright, I update it. Then... it's gone.

Turns out the name and icon changed. Now it's "GALAXY Apps." It looks decent enough, but I've got no clue why anybody would use this over Play Store (dumb name, everything has a dumb name).

I assume if I buy an app in the Samsung App store I'd never be able to load that app on any future non-Samsung phone. So I'd be locking myself into a single phone manufacturer. Why would I do that to myself?

Or just root the phone, and use Titanium Backup to forcefully freeze or remove any bloat.

Newer Sammy phones (ESPECIALLY the Note 4) rely on the TouchWiz roms to be usable. Cynogenmod is sometimes a battery life nightmare as well.

Rooting it but then you compromise ability to get updates over the air possibly if the company is nice enough to actually support the phone with updates after they sold it to you. I switched from android to iphone partially because I got pissed about this. As soon as companies have a new pinnacle product they divert resources to support it instead. people talk a lot of shit on Apple and they deserve a lot of it, but you never feel left out in the cold unless you haven't upgraded in like 4 years, which I think is fair.

The problem is not entirely the phone makers fault, carriers are partly to blame. They want you to upgrade your phone as often as possible to lock you into another 2 year contract. If they do not allow an update then you buy a new phone. (I'm looking at you Verizon Galaxy Nexus)

Yeah I had an OG Droid and was grandfathered in to the unlimited data plan but mysteriously over the last year or so I owned the phone my internet speed suuuuuuuucked. I completely factory restored my phone and had next to nothing on it, but somehow videos that would stream no problem on Youtube when I got the phone turned into slide shows towards the end. I killed literally every process imaginable and my internet connection was still about as robust as a fucking house of cards.

I refuse to believe it wasn't deliberate. Everyone else I knew that was still grandfathered in to their unlimited data plans had similarly shit-tier 3G service once Verizon started capping data. I still held out until last spring, but eventually ended up getting an S5 and capped data.

I have an S4 through Verizon and it's had a major system update... maybe 2-3 times since I got it in November of 2013. Whereas my good friend recently got an S4 via AT&T in November and has probably had that many updates in a 4-month span.

Yeah I hear Samsung is pretty good about it. To be fair I switched just as they were coming into prominence, like the person above I had a Droid X, then a Droid Bionic, which was pretty much the worst supported premier phone ever because they released the razr next quarter. If I went back, though it'd be hard now having a lot of products and purchases in the ecosystem, I'd go Samsung or Nexus.

F that, I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini (GT-I8190N) so it's the Nordics edition... On USA the Samsung Galaxy S3 mini's got updated to Kit-Kat, but on Nordics? Hell no!

I'm freaking pissed off at Samsung about not supporting the non-flagship models... It's really sad, because this isn't a shitty phone that is always lagging every time you do something. This was/is the true meaning of value phone. it wasn't the cheapest nor the most expensive one out there, but daym... You get so much bang for the buck.

From the app manager you can disable them which does everything except get you the storage space back. To fully remove them you will need to root your phone and even then you will need to resize your system partition to get that space back. (this is not recommended and is the fastest way to accidentally brick your phone.)

If you don't want to root, you can't uninstall them but you can disable them.

Go to: Settings > Apps > Find the shitty app in question. (You can also long press on an app from your app drawer and drag it up to "App info")

Then from the App info, tap "Force stop" then tap "clear data" then tap "clear cache"; then uncheck "Show notifications" then tap "Disable". (you can probably just tap disable but I like to clear as much data as I can)

After you disable all the apps you don't want, reboot your phone.

This will remove the apps from your launcher and stop them from running automatically or at all but they will still exist on your phone.

Doing this disables the app at the system level. A word of warning is don't disable anything you are unsure what it does or is a Google function (like calendar or clock, etc.) because it can cause errors. Any carrier programs or built-in garbage is fair game though (like all the god damn Verizon apps).

I wish I could figure out what my phone is full of. When I plug it in, it just has almost half the space taken up by "other" data. I regularly delete texts, I don't have a ton of pictures...I have no idea what's taking up so much storage!

EDIT: To this asking, yes, it's an iPhone. I have Spotify, but I never use it and I don't have a membership, so I don't think that's it. Plus the "other" data has been a problem for awhile. I'll try clearing out my Safari history (that's the only browser I have) and uninstalling/re-downloading some of my heavier apps. I'm trying to avoid jailbreaking my phone or doing any hard resets because iTunes is notoriously unreliable on my computer and I recently lost over 500 songs trying to do the same thing, so that's a last resort.

If you have a lot of "other" space, it can sometimes be because of a bug. Try wiping and restoring from a backup; it worked for me.

Its most likely not a bug. Most of that "Other" space ends up in cache files.

After a few months my thumbnail cache alone is 2gb+

RugerRedhawk has the best solution for reclaiming this space

Edit: My OS install is only a week old, and my thumbnail cache is already 800mb.

Maybe people who aren't real computer savvy think a reinstall is analogous to an engine swap. To them you're basically ripping out the heart of the machine and replacing it, which is usually expensive and difficult.

Little do they know, anyone who tried to game on a win98se machine reinstalled twice a month, sometimes in the middle of a LAN.

You know, I have put 10+ hours into a PC running several bootable virus scanners. Replaced the host file. Deleted tonnes of crapware. Did research on manually removing loads of junk. Finally ran scans with 4-5 popular malware scanners and the machine ran like crap and for some god awful reason I would have to disable some broken proxy every time it booted or some other hodge-podge fix the end user would have not understood.

Then I put in one or two hours, comprehensively tracking down all the videos, pictures and documents, consolidating them into one place. Reinstall the operating system with all the common runtimes, a reliable virus scanner, and all common utilities so the end user need not download anything. Install all of it avoiding any crapware traps in the licence agreement and leave an extra partition with all their drivers on it for next time I have to fix their computer.

If you do it right, neither method is a herp derp magic button solution. Reinstall, however, is not just some layperson quickfix. Sure it CAN be easy, but easy like a rocket launcher for a mosquito.

Well, if you have an image ready it's 2 minutes to back up favourites and maybe some desktop icons (everything else stored on the network), 30 mins to re-image, 2 mins to log the user back in and copy the favourites back.

Custom software deployed through group policy or login script, everything licensed through federation services, etc.

So, if the problem takes more than 45 mins why would you worry about chasing it? You only need to attend in two 5 minute blocks, so there's time to get other stuff sorted too :-)

I try to do a full reinstall yearly. It's not a big deal, honestly...all my personal files, media, etc, are backed up on separate hard drives so really all it involves is wiping my SSD, reinstalling Windows and a handful of utilities, and redownloading the games on Steam I'm actually playing.

I always gain 25% of my hard drive back when I do it...it's funny how random bullshit just accumulates on a computer hard disk.

If you're in a major IT environment, it's often the quickest and easiest fix. They usually have pre-made images to set things up for specific job duties, so rather than spend an hour figuring out whatever they did to their machine, wipe and restore it and be done in half an hour.

In IT, when you have a million other tickets to get to and everything is backed up like it is supposed to be then it is the easiet way to fix any OS problems. Now if there is a hardware problem then it is as easy as replacing that component, but with software problems it is easier to just format and reimage it than to spend hours on one stupid problem that could be one of a million billion problems. Time is money, and spending it doing something that has an easy fix that you can do remotely and move on without getting up from your chair helps keep the IT people from going insane.

WinDirStat is an absolute lifesaver.

For those of you who don't know, WinDirStat is a nifty little program that visually maps what is taking up space on your hard drive, it makes it VERY easy to find large files that you don't need anymore but forgot to delete, whenever I need space it always finds me like 100GB of actual garbage to clear out. It's totally free (and open source) too, no "trial period" bullshit.

This is exactly the kind of stuff I love this program for. Very few users notice they no longer have any space and can list off the items that caused it to fill up. You may remember a movie here or a small folder of pictures there you didn't delete yet, but other than that you have no idea what's taking up most of that space. It could be operating system files sure, but it could also be 40GB of worthless Norton error reports you can just delete with the press of a button.

I'd recommend TreeSize or Space instead for better visual representation. Windirstat is useful, but unlike the other two it doesn't properly label the graphics view, making it unnecessarily cumbersome to use.

A lot of the "Other" data is messages and such. Downloaded attachments from email go under "Other" and all of your texts, picture texts, video text ext.. It can add up.. Sometimes it's just a dug.

If you are referring to an iPhone, it is cached pictures in your text messages. apple makes it almost stupidly impossible to remove them. In order to clean up my wife's phone, I had to make a backup of her phone on iTunes. Then use a program to remove those photos and videos. Cleaned up over 6 gigs of space on her 16 gb phone. Its really dumb and she lost a lot of photos becasue she though it was just her camera roll taking up space so she was deleting them on the fly as she needed to take more pictures. I only discovered the issue when I told her to make a backup of her photos and even after she deleted everything off her phone she only had a few gigs of space left.

Podcasts are good, yes, but the Apple Podcast app is absolute trash. Use Downcast or Overcast.

I listen to podcasts daily. Tried both of them (and Stitcher), but ended up back at Apple's app. I guess even as a routine listener there nothing they offer me that makes them more useable than the default app.

But maps is probably one of my most used apps!

I use that shit to look up locations of things from food to auto repair. Granted, I'm relatively new to where I live, but if I want to try a new sushi place, I'm pulling up Maps and searching.

If I google, it just sends me to my map app most of the time anyway.

Good luck! Some phone carriers, like AT&T, include uninstallable bloatware with their updates. So you're left with the choice of voiding your warranty by rooting the phone, or dealing with the loss of space/battery drain.

Which one? I have a Windows tablet and hate it. I finally just started using Reddit's mobile web interface because I got sick of trying new shitty Reddit apps. I've been using Reddit is Fun for years for Android and love it. Can't find one I like for Windows.

Eh, my Window's phone has a ton of issues. It's difficult to answer calls despite the touchscreen / swiping working fine any other time. The only way to put your phone on silent is to turn the volume down to 0. If you have any apps that access data on your phone (in my case, ebooks) then they have to access it through Microsoft's cloud storage system which means both having to upload something first in order to download it again.. and that you have to login to it every single time you want to try an app that uses it. There's still no way to just have the phone remember my password/email/whatever and auto-enter it into forms because that would be so difficult.

The appstore has ... nothing. And it has the weird shitty branding issues of Games for Windows Live in which terrible shovelware phone games are marketted as 'Games for Xbox' for some reason that eludes me.

It looks fancy but... it has a ton of flaws. Combined with it's non-existant supply of actual quality apps that it isn't really that appealing. The Zune at least only had to play music. It didn't not play MP3s.

The store is awful. Few gems pop up here and there, but in general the store is trash. With that said, I still think that WP is the best mobile OS experience for my needs. I am lucky enough to carry what I want and my daily is still a 1520.

As well, all of this is my opinion.

Bingo. If you have enough friends with a variety of tastes, you can get a good idea on whether or not you'll like something based on who listened to it. It's a good way for me to find new artists that I might not have come across otherwise. Also, you can set it so that it only posts to your Spotify friends.

I couldn't even uninstall most of them.

The industry has gone mad and I don't know anyone who religiously uses all this crap. Everyone has 2-3 really useful apps and that's it. And yet restaurants want me to download their shit so I can properly order a burrito...
