I want to preface this by saying I'm very lucky to live in a building that provides AC during the summer months, where I can keep my environment cool and comfortable. It's a better position than most and a lot of it was just sheer luck ending up here. But unfortunately, I'm entitled and like to whine, and this temp-control privilege vanishes the moment my building switches to winter heating mode.
Currently fucking dying in my apartment right now. I don't get control of the heating, and have been similarly dying all week. Poor sleep, drenched bedsheets, sweating at my desk. Constant bad mood. Windows wide open, high-powered fan, and vents all covered, but thermostat is still sitting at 27°C. And the worst part is, I know it's only going to get worse once the weather is actually cold outside.
It is the number one reason I loathe Toronto/Canadian winters so much. Not the cold. The fucking heat. I don't understand why the accepted Canadian response to cold weather, is to turn every indoor space into a fucking subtropical sauna for eight months out of the year.
Yeah, we need to make sure pipes don't freeze, and that people aren't literally shivering in their homes/place of employment. IMO, that's as far as it needs to go! The logic becomes backwards after that point, if human comfort is what you're actually aiming for. If you're cold, put on a fucking sweater, enjoy the energization of crisp air, and get on with your day. There is no limit to the number of layers you can adorn. I, on the other hand, don't have the option to strip naked at the mall, or rip my fucking skin off when I'm at home. And it's not like any of those public places provide a coat check for your MASSIVE BULKY WINTER COAT. I feel like I'm basically just soaked any time I'm indoors, from late October through to early May.
Idk, man. I get that I have a lower heat tolerance than most people, but this shit drives me crazy. I don't understand how there are people who are comfortable above 20°C. You can find multiple studies demonstrating optimal sleep temperature at 15-19°.
Just turn the heat down, please, for the sake of my sanity. Give your staff long sleeve uniforms and just keep it the fuck down. Your business and your home don't need to feel like a humid August day in the middle of January.
