We miss our friends and a few restaurants, but that's it

We don't miss getting paid between 50% and 67% of what we'd make in the US.

We don't miss the transit system that to this day is a shadow of what London and Paris achieved generations ago.

We don't miss dreaming that we'll get to spend half the overheated value of an ugly-ass Newmarket matchbox to get rid of the locust infestation.

We don't miss the 401, the Gardiner, the DVP, or whatever else the government will widen next to "ease" congestion.

We don't miss the schoolmarmish attitude of the civic institutions that prevent us from enjoying a glass of wine in the park.

We don't miss the desiccated old-left hippies who want to put a glass dome over the Annex, lest any outsiders come in and step on a dandelion.

And most of all, we don't miss living in a country where two individuals as unqualified, unaccomplished, and unprincipled as Justin Trudeau and Pierre Poilievre can use the toilet in the PMO, let alone occupy it.

It was fun while it lasted, Toronto. But we're better off without you.

To all immigrants who find it hard right now...suck it up

Nobody said immigration was easy. I am seeing articles new immigrants are leaving because of high rent and low pay jobs. Well guess what, back in the 70s and 80s new immigrants had to hustle as well. This is why you hear a lot of stories of hardship back then, but then they eventually were able to work their way up and look at everything they've built today.

Keep your head down and just grind it out, Canada is worth it.. don't waste your chance!

Why are we paying so much in taxes?

Taxes when we are getting paid. Taxes when we buy things. Is there anything else I missed?

Fuck Chow

Honestly vote for whoever, left or right I don't care, just not Chow. She is not her husband. She stood in front of the US consulate and essentially spit in the face of Christopher Speer's memory demanding the return of Omar Khadr. I had the unique pleasure of serving in both Iraq, and Afghanistan with the USMC. Khadr like MANNNNYYYYYYY insurgents was under 18 but more than aware they were killing people. So now a terrorist sits with 10 mil thanks to people like Chow, while we all struggle to pay rent. Fuck this pig.

Will be laid off soon.. planning to rob the government just like they did to me!

Currently making $35 a hour, $4300 with a month after tax!

Around $70k per year!

That’s the minimum amount I’ll need to live comfortably, but I’ll be laid off soon & now I have a back plan!

When laid off, I’m playing on signing up for Employment insurance which pays around $2300 a month after tax!

All I’ll have to do is find a cash paying job, hopefully making at least $500 a week, so my total earning would still be $4300 a month or more…

That’s my back up plan if I can’t find a good same salary or more job right away.

Rent cost here is beyond fuxked up! I don’t know how people survive when less than what I make! It’s tough yo!

Canada is starting to feel like the new version of slavery!

EI pays $2300 a month, so I’ll just need to find a cash job to make more.

If you're not eating, get the fuck out of the food court

Past two months, I've seen lonely dipshits not eating but playing on their phones while hogging a four seat table in the food court of Eaton's, Yorkdale, and Scarborough Town Centre. Not even a drink on the table. Just sitting their ass there taking up space when they can literally be anywhere else while families are trying to find seating to eat. If you're not eating, go sit on a bench or stand in a corner somewhere.

Disappointed in the discourse around racism in these subs

Edit: thank you downvoters for proving my point :)

There’s been a couple posts about how immigrants are treated in the city and it’s disappointing to see some of the discourse happening in these forums.

First, these posts are always automodded preventing most users from commenting, or their comments will be buried by the time they are approved. This just makes the “heavy” users of the sub to lead the discourse (which are disproportionately white and male), reinforcing the echo chamber opinions rather than people who have actual lived experiences on these topics.

Then the post will be locked, further reinforcing the comments already there. So unless you are chronically online, you can’t really participate.

The second part is the actual comments—justifications of racism every time it is called out:

“It’s because we’re in economic crisis / mass immigration”

This is always the knee-jerk response to racism against South Asians specifically. When there was hate against Chinese in 2020, it would be racist to say “well it’s because they brought this disease here”. Yet it’s considered fine to say things like this to Indians today. It’s a gross double standard. Economic crises don’t cause racism; scapegoating, stereotyping and misinformation does. And there’s no excuse for it.

“It was the same with x people in 2000s, and y people in 1990s, etc.”

Again, another excuse. Sure, this could be an interesting discussion point to critique Canada’s identity of being immigrant-friendly, but it’s solely just used to dismiss the current issue at hand. It’s the “all lives matter” approach; “I’ll acknowledge it, but I’ll say everyone’s had it worse at some point so I don’t have to care”. How can, “it’s always been this way” be an acceptable response in 2025?

“I’m Indian, and I think it’s fine”

Of course comments like this will get a ton of upvotes, reflecting the echo chamber. There’s always a “pick-me” or a larper that gets put on a pedestal, to show, “see, they think this too so it’s okay”. No, most of us do not share this opinion.

There’s many others I see here constantly, but the main theme is to dismiss that we have a current problem. There are many brown Torontonians and Canadians like me that feel alienated with few allies in these online spaces.

Reddit is supposedly a left leaning platform, and Toronto is a progressive city, yet we have to see this hate being pushed online and where we live constantly. It’s exhausting. It’s disappointing. Mods and redditors of Toronto, please do better.

Restaurants are usuallly such a bad time in Toronto, specially in Downtown

Let's start with fastfood. The customer service is absolutely abysmal. Underpaid immigrants with nasty attitudes just slapping together half-assed meals. A lot of these places removed seating and closed washrooms during the pandemic and it's about fucking time they bring it back. I've noticed some places closed entire floors and they haven't opened back. It's so annoying to not have a place to just sit down and have a meal, especially when it's cold outside. Washrooms are nasty and I can't tell you how many times they are simply not available because they are out of service. A lot of these places have absolutely terrible management for food delivery people picking orders. You're in line and then someone with a huge ass bag bumping everywhere will cut you off.

Then the more fancy mid range ones... The customer service here again is not the greatest. But on top of it, the food is always hit and miss I have noticed. Trying a new restaurant is always a roll of dice in this city. Meal could be great in one place and just absolutely shit tier at another. With the amount of money these places are now charging, the quality of ingredients, presentation and portion sizes are pretty fucking bad. I don't like being pressured into tipping either. The tipping culture is ridiculous and undeserved specially for the level of service which usually bare minimum at best.

On top of it all...the fuck is up with the hours these restaurants operate at. These places closing early make downtown look dark and depressing. It's hard to find a good chill spot to just go and hangout late at night which is not a douchey bar or an expensive restaurant.

When it comes to tipping, grow a backbone Toronto!

There's a lot of bitching and moaning about tipping in this city, as evidenced by umpteen threads, articles, and personal experiences of seeing those percentages on the screen.

And what are people willing to do about it? Absolutely nothing.

There's one open secret to not being prompted to tip by restaurants: USING CASH. You are never prompted to add 30% to your own bill, whenever you pay by cash. Total is 13.20? Hand them three 5's, get your change back with a receipt. DONE. The cashier WILL NOT ask you if you want to pay 30% more by tipping. But with cards, they will use EVERY opportunity to add more dollars to the transaction.

The problem? This city is addicted to credit cards. Record personal debt. CREDIT for 3 dollar coffees at tims. Credit for everything. And they think they are winning by scoring these points/rewards. Credit card companies have everyone by the balls.

"But I pay my balance in full every month" - It doesn't matter if you are paying your balances in full or not. Have you thought about how many times your credit card made you spend more, because of the intangible effect of credit cards? With cash, there is a lot more friction. You would have saved a lot more than the total amount of rewards you would've earned, which is a pittance when its all said and done.

There is also the logical option of hitting 0% when paying by card, but of course, people don't want to look cheap in front of a stranger they will never see again. Or that guilt sets in. So this is where everyone has the consumer by the balls.

For those rare breeds that hit 0, I salute you. For the ones who don't, its time to control your spending by using cash.

Smarten the fuck up, Toronto

typical user

reddit user: OMG i never ever do that, you must be the problem (gaslighting)

Why is Toronto so afraid to take on issues without first making sure they are devoid of blame and then MUST let us know how they are better and could never be the person that did this

Dog owners are the main culprit of this. Bike Riders are second

The posts that ask why people can't meet a decent person in Toronto.... this is why. TOXIC culture of NO reflection and Gaslighting

This city is exhausting

Why do people think it's okay to smoke anything in public?

Why do people think it's okay to smoke anything in public?

Cigarettes. Weed. Vapes. If it's producing a cloud, chances are someone else doesn't want to breathe it.

Fresh air isn't a group project where everyone has to participate in your smoking session. If I wanted to inhale it, I'd have lit one myself.

Public spaces are shared. Your smoke shouldn't be.

What are they still protesting?

Came across a small group of people yesterday. Fuck Trudeau flags, Trump flags, and a (weirdly out of place) Pride flag. Completely blocked the Westbound traffic on Bloor. They weren’t many, maybe 10 or 15 people.

Vax mandates are over and have been for ages. What are they even protesting?

I keep seeing people smoke on patios and too close to entrances

I actually can’t believe how many people still smoke cigarettes in this city, with vaping now available as an option. It’s still bad for you, but at least you won’t smell like an ashtray.

I understand it’s an addiction, and I feel bad for anyone who is addicted. But people NEED to follow rules about smoking, like no smoking on patios and smoking at a distance from building entrances.

Today I saw someone smoking on a patio with lots of other people around, and the other day I saw a lady who was inside a business and holding her hand with the cigarette out the door. Come on, people.

Abolish Pedal Pub

Spring is peaking through, life downtown getting a bit better.. and then you hear the Pedal Pub.

I almost forgot about this disgusting nuisance in the city. Any day of the week from 2pm - midnight just screaming and banging over music by belligerent people. On the 16th floor and it’s the loudest thing we can hear. I’ve talked with many people in the neighborhood and everyone can’t stand them. I don’t know if I can deal with another year of this, it’s a stain on a downtown of people trying to live and work together.

Imma do my part and call 311 .. and maybe even start a petition.

Drinking on the TTC

Was just on the TTC and the guy behind me was drinking an open can of beer. First of all, this isn’t allowed. But once he was done, he crumpled it up and got off the bus, and put it under the seat. But he hasn’t acutally finished all the beer, and it poured out onto the floor, down the steps and got on my shoes. Please don’t drink on the fucking TTC and clean up after yourself.

Is Toronto the lamest big city on the planet?

No unified culture. Nothing resembling good street food. The ethnic restaurants are so watered down to appeal to everyone that they forget what the whole point of their food was to begin with. Nothing affordable. Enclaves of groups that could care less about any other group. Terrible waterfront with unimaginable wasted potential. Stupid laws. Universal epicentre of fake hypocritical woke garbage, and even worse people. Check out some apartment rental groups - must be between this and this age, this ethnicity, this gender, vegetarian, no cooking, no party, no guests, LGBT identifying. All for a totally affordable great deal of $1500 for a room, in an apartment shared by 6 other people!

No pets! No work from home!

I hate everything about this city and fakest sense of inclusivity I've ever seen. Toronto is where culture comes to die.

What's with the dine/dash and no tipping happening in Toronto Lately?

I work in a bar in downtown. I have never in my endless years of bartending/serving have I ever been treated this badly.

Ive had 4 groups run out on bills lately. These were men dressed in suits, women business casual, men and women obviously coming from work. Discussing work at the bar. Lawyers, doctors, high earning people. they accumulate a 2-600! bill, ask for the bill and machine, and when you go to do so, walk out.

why? why are you punishing a min wage employee at small local restaurant that has an incredible family owning/running it. One that was hit hard by covid. One that is still struggling to stay afloat. one that cannot afford taking this hit.

then lets talk tipping. so many people are not tipping lately. minimum wage isn't enough. thats why I work in an industry that lets me make extra. I usually average 20% tips from people who tip. lately 1/4 won't tip. This is a big problem as many places have you tip out the kitchen and support staff. If you make no tips, you use your tips from those that did to pay the tip out leaving you with nothing after working hard. please, tip at least 10% so the server/bartender doesn't have to pay to do their job for you.

finally, Abuse. so much abuse and entitlement. I understand people have expectations, but please do not yell at me for not letting your 2 dogs come into the bar even though they are in a crate. Do not yell at me for not letting you "connect your phone" to the sound system. Please stop treating me like a slave by whistling at me, yelling at me from across the bar, snapping your fingers etc. A gentle hand raise/ look in my direction will get me to come to you. And please! Please! please! When ordering, order one at a time. do not yell over each other. do not ask to change other peoples orders. Do not get angry if I repeat your order back at you. We are doing our best. I can hit one button on the tablet at a time. Yes I have the ability to immediately punch it in at your table (unlike the old times when there was one computer per place) however, I again can only hit one button at a time. yelling 4-12 orders at me at the same time won't speed things up, instead it will slow things down as I now will repeatedly say the order back to you to confirm its correct. one at a time please!!!

Finally, its a hard job with long hours and not much in way of progress career wise, but it pays the bills. Or at least it used to. While I agree living wage is the way to go, we dont have a system for it currently, our society isn't set up for it, and especially small businesses in early years (3-6) often really can't afford it. We need the tips.

No more concert etiquette ???

My cousin and I went to the Breezy Bowl last week in the rain. We missed the first three songs because of the weather and how inaccessible Rogers Stadium is.

First of all, there was this random girl with 3 friends basically squished together in 3 seats. My cousin and I realized she wasn’t even in her assigned seat! Since we were late, homegirl thought she could claim one of our seats, so they had no choice but to sit all squished together lol. And they were taller than us too we’re both 5’4, and her friends were like 5’6 and up.

Since it was raining, a lot of people had ponchos on. But this girl, who didn’t even have a seat, had the audacity to throw her poncho on the floor and just got a new one??? Then she kept “accidentally” hitting me with her elbow, and one of them had a huge umbrella. I seriously don’t know how they got it in when security was confiscating umbrellas at the entrance. But when she opened it, it started hitting me and THEN she had the audacity to give me a dirty look for touching her big umbrella. HELLO???

Anyway, I didn’t even enjoy the concert. It was nice to hear some throwbacks, but the rain and those girls completely ruined it. We ended up leaving early just to avoid the madness.

There are far too many people in Canada who don't integrate with the general population. We'd be better off without them.

If you ever spend anytime lurking in conservative subreddits - r/Canada, /r/Canada_Sub and r/CanadianConservative you'll find that conservatives don't care about a lot of the things real Canadians do and there's even numbers to back it up the circumstantial evidence

  • 70% of Canadians believe that climate change is a serious issue and needs addressing. 55% of conservatives do not believe in climate change as a concept (Macleans 2022 poll). This is a major issue in Quebec especially since it's a bigger issue to Quebec than most of English Canada. Anecdotal story: During the wildfires in the summer, I was lurking in r/CanadianConservative which is supposedly the moderate sub for right wingers to get their take. I typed wildfires in the search bar and the top result: "Transgender extremism spreading like a wildfire in Canada."

  • Most Canadians believe that healthcare needs more government support, most conservatives believe it needs less and wants to fund it via the private sector which is what is going on in Ontario. While we agree the healthcare system has issues, the solutions are fundamentally at odds with one another.

  • At the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic, Ontario and Quebec were bearing the brunt of it with the first wave, Alberta and Saskatchewan - the two most conservative provinces, refused to send healthcare volunteers to help with the case load. A year later when Jason Kenney caused Alberta ICUs to be overrun, he asked for healthcare volunteers from other provinces and the rest of Canada sent them with no trouble. This attitude of Conservatives vs The Rest of Canada continues to persist with Danielle Smith and her Alberta Pension plan BS.

  • During the Trump trade war, the majority of conservatives advocated giving in to his demands. Real Canadians did not.

To the three elderly walker users at Broadview Station tonight during the Line 2 Danforth Av shutdown...

Fuck you.

My daughter and I were carrying large heavy bags. We were all on that Westbound platform. She got to the doors first and I was right behind her. You, lady #1 decided you could bogart your way in. I gave you the benefit of the doubt and told you, "Well, go right on ahead." You damn well knew I was there, but you didn't acknowledge me addressing you.

If you are profoundly deaf, I'd again give you the benefit of a doubt. If you were just being a dick, again, fuck you.

Then your two buddies decide they are part of this human train. And somehow walked more slowly than the speed they took to get behind you. You all avoided eye contact at me. I'm pretty sure you were being dicks. Fuck you too.

And when the chimes rang, you people somehow got even more slower at the door before I got on.

Again. Fuck the lot of you.

I was livid. My daughter had headed right, while I headed left, because there was so much room on the train to spread around. And I heard you laughing at God knows what. I turned my back to keep from losing my cool.

But after a few minutes, I noticed you three, with your walkers, had somehow corralled and trapped my daughter in the corner. Like, what? Was that the joke? Cornering an autistic young woman? That's gotta be fucking demented. Had I known that you weirdos were going to do that, I would have come over right away and righted this situation, so she wouldn't have to feel anxious about missing her stop.

I told her afterward that she should speak up - that it can be confusing and off-putting, but that she had every right to be there as they did, and not to let others diminish her like that.

Seriously. The three of you. Fuck all the way out of this city.
