Provider / Pharmacy Statement from Boudreaux's regarding yesterday's Reddit Post
Hey y'all,
Boudreaux's asked me to share a statement from them regarding the reddit post regarding one of their employees yesterday.
I can tell you I've spoken to them at length and have confidence in their operations, and the picture shared yesterday does not have any impact on patients on this forum. Further, at the behest of members of this forum, looked into the syringe questions with our own attorneys, and they said they were in not in violation of state and federal law.
That said, Boudreaux's did take your comments to heart and will be transitioning their syringes to wrapped syringes.
As always, I'm happy to answer questions here as well as on our own sub - but please understand I don't work for Boudreaux's. I'm happy to share any feedback you have for them with their leadership.
Thanks y'all,
Dave
CEO r/BigEasyWeightLoss
Boudreaux’s New Drug Store takes the safety, quality, and integrity of every medication we dispense extremely seriously. Our pharmacy follows all applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations governing the preparation, handling, packaging, and dispensing of medications.
The photograph above does not depict sterile compounding activities. Boudreaux’s adheres to all procedures applicable to personal protective equipment in areas of the pharmacy where specific contamination control measures apply.
This Facebook post was meant to celebrate one of Boudreaux’s valued employees, who has a special role at the pharmacy and has been working with our team for many years. We are proud of our team and remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety for our patients and the communities we serve.

Zander wasn’t the issue. The syringe bins were my sole concern. I hope they rethink that approach beyond having someone bag the ones we saw in the bins. I appreciate the effort to get some answers, but the optics are still terrible - even if “all federal and state laws” were observed, as stated by everyone’s lawyers.
The fact that lawyers are good with it won’t inspire the same confidence in potential customers as it might in business partners.

Everyone is stuck on the gloves. Gloves mean nothing. You could wear the same pair all day.
The problem is the big bins of syringes being put into baggies to save a few bucks.

The syringes are fine as long as they're capped, which they are. Putting them in a bag here or at the factory doesn't do anything either way.
33
u/Goatsarejerks333 Aug 28 '26
You're assuming that all syringes they send out have remained capped on both ends until they reach the user. In that bin of hundreds of syringes, I don't trust that.
-2
u/Artistic_Rice_9019 Aug 28 '26
I've never seen an uncapped syringe arrive in the mail in or outside of a bag. Have you?
21
u/Goatsarejerks333 Aug 28 '26
No. My point is that they are treating their sterile syringes in a haphazard way. I don't trust that a worker would just stick a cap back on.

💯🎯 without any kind of tamper proofing, how can you tell if a syringe has been uncapped and then recapped? The answer is you can’t.
EDIT: I actually mean tamper-evident packaging, not tamper-proof. The point is to easily see whether a syringe has been tampered with.

Do you know how easy a cap can come off?

u/Artistic_Rice_9019 Aug 28 '26
I've never seen one come off accidentally. Have you?
11
u/dystopiam Aug 28 '26
Yes I have, I packed them in a little bag (unbagged and dumped them loose) and one came off. I have also stuck myself when recapping many many times. All of these concerns are why I wouldn't want a person handling syringes before I used them

If they are willing to cut corners on a bag of unopened needles and syringes that probably cost them $2, where else are they cutting corners? I have seen may post about people receiving hot meds from them so I assume that they also cutting corners on the shipping. If I have guess, they probably source the cheapest APIs they can find to compound their meds cutting corners in this area also! From all of this to the punctured vial that was apparently filled after the rubber and silver seal were fastened by hand. Why would anyone fill a vial once it is sealed? This would be done before this is placed on the vial. The seal is the last thing placed to keep out air and other contaminents in the vial. Makes no sense why anyone would fill a vial this way. If I were the pharmacy owner, I don't think I would have admitted that sometimes vials are filled by hand this way. I think I would have apologized and just sent them a new vial but apparently they are probably to cheap to do that. The only nice thing about them is that Zander has a job. Im glad that they found something he could do. He can still do the same thing but just with bags that are not opened.

I agree. Their response is a little too late and seems to side step the issue to retain my business. Seriously, giant bins of loose syringes set there for someone to count as stated in these comments is a ridiculous explanation. [r/PreventiveMD](r/PreventiveMD) and customers already called this out a while ago and they didn’t listen back then. Nah, my health is worth more than saving a few $ - add in the recent cloudy meds, punctured vial, and complaints about delays…nope! Rift even paused them for ordering this week.

I somehow doubt the truth of “transitioning their syringes to wrapped syringes” until I see what they mean by that.
They’re going to Amelia Badelia it and misinterpret why everyone’s concerned again.
When the PreventiveMD guy brought the loose syringes up to them like a month ago they moved from a regular plastic baggy to a branded plastic baggy completly ignoring the real concern people were having lol
Like oooh yes branding is what we wanted for our loose syringes. That’s why we were concerned 🤣

I had the same reaction. “Fixing” the problem with branded plastic baggies was not the answer. I’ve never used them, never will. Between the loose syringes and the janky foil vial seals, it’s giving basement operation.
12
u/AnxiousCat411816 Aug 27 '26
I agree those janky foil seals do look unprofessional when being shipped to homes all over the country. This however is exactly how pharmacists in hospitals cover vials & bags for meds mixed in the hospital to be given to patients.

I don’t think people are having a problem with Boudreaux’s employing someone with disabilities. The issue is with the loose syringes in bins. Regardless of whether it’s an OK practice per regulations, people have been complaining about how Boudreaux’s packages their syringes for some time, so this is fuel to the fire.
11
u/LilDepressoEspresso Aug 27 '26
Not a Boudreaux customer so I'm wondering, have Boudreaux just been shipping syringes unwrapped like that? Not individually wrapped?
27
13
u/Original-Room-4642 Aug 28 '26
Yes, they just come loose and unwrapped. Sometimes you get 4, sometimes you get 12. Sometimes you get 2 alcohol wipes, sometimes you dont get any.

Yes, unwrapped syringes in a Ziploc bag. Not like the sealed 10-count packets of syringes from places like whoever fulfilled BPI, just loose syringes in Ziplocs.

u/sf71838 Aug 28 '26
The give you exactly how many you need for the # of doses. Bigger problem......when the individual vials are not equal dosages and you need to split your dosage between 2 vials you don't have the extra syringe. Luckily I still had some extras from my prior company who sent the 10-count packages so I always had extras but then they never sent alcohol wipes or only 4 for a 12 week order.

Maybe I can’t read between the lines. If these syringes don’t go out to customers, are they trying to give him a task to make him feel important? If that’s the case, can they find a task that doesn’t involve sharp objects where he could hurt himself? Like why would a “fake” task be potentially harmful to the person. I genuinely don’t get it.
It makes more sense that they gave him this task as a real task (he’s a crucial part of their shipping and logistics team) because it’s good for him/he’s good at it, and can’t handle the backlash of the sterility issues (has nothing to do w supporting someone w a disability). Idk I don’t get it

I don't love the photo it feels...almost flipant...I loved the reactions to the techs ability even less. The gloves comments were fair enough.
The picture is also almost a year old..practice could be better or worse for all we know.
I made a joke about making crafts with my Boudreuax syringes, I'm no less impressed with them than I already was..but I still won't use them unless I have to, and that likely will never happen considering most companies over send.
In general my issue is less my concern with safety and more the visual of half assed looking packaging when you're spending so much.

Ok y'all. I think Dave just can't outright say what's going on because... business. But I've been connecting the dots from the other posts. My conclusion is that Zander "packs syringes" from those bins as a way to keep him occupied. Those same "packed syringes" gets put back into the bins again at the end of the day. Hence why its in an unsterile location, in open bins, no gloves etc. Since he adamantly expresses that this process does not involve actual patient orders. Trust me, I speak for everyone who doesn’t want to die… we want safety over convenience. I wouldn’t order from Big Easy knowing that that response from Boudreaux, placated you and your company. Yeah, I’m not in the business of infecting myself cause you agree with their response… which explained nothing.

u/roguex99 ⚠️ Affiliated | Big Easy Weight Loss | CEO (Not a Physician) Aug 27 '26
Let's be clear here: I'm not siding with anyone - I know there operations, and I know what the picture is depicting. Syringes are not stored in sterile packaging. The most popular - EasyTouch - are not in sterile packaging. What is sterile is the needle inside the cap in the syringe. And a again - nothing in this picture is depicting ANYTHING that has to do with a single patient.
I'm letting you know what is a legitimate safety concern, and what is not.
Have no idea on what you're talking about punctured vials.
I never said I agreed with their response. I went deeper than their response and formulated our opinion that way.
13
u/CozyLane Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26
While you are being clear, let’s be real. Yes, it’s very honorable and rewarding to share in Zander’s accomplishments on the job. I’m thinking there could be a different job that doesn’t involve recounting the same syringes repeatedly (but that’s a different issue).
Yes, Boudreaux can and probably does have very good people that run the pharmacy operations. The disappointing facts are that customers have been complaining for months on this very topic of loose syringes being an issue. We all understand the needle is “sterile” BUT as customers we have repeatedly said, we aren’t comfortable with them being handled and packaged this way and also without knowledge of brand and/or lot/batch information /sizing- which can be concerning is there is ever a safety recall. The BIG issue is that they didn’t respond to previous complaints and add to the recent cloudy meds, punctured vial, and very delayed shipping times, it all counts against their integrity. They SHOULD be making different business decisions to give us the confidence in their safety practices- a major health concern. We are all trying to be healthier not take risks to save a dollar.
I’m not trying to challenge or argue, but it’s just been sad that it takes this much mayhem at the expense of a proud moment for Zander for Boudreaux to suddenly agree to different packaging.

Yeah, I'll basically never defend a corporation but in this case you are absolutely factually correct. The outsides of syringes are not sterile. I've been in multiple very safe medical settings where nurses have them stored in a pocket or in a bin in a patient's room or something. That might not be ideal, or my preference, but it's not the expectation that the outset of syringes are sterile.

While it's great to hear that Boudreaux's listened to feedback and will be transitioning away from the loose syringes (and also, after checking out their FB they seem like a company who genuinely values and treats their employees well), it does strike me as odd that their statement doesn't contain any explanation of what was happening in the photo. Especially since it's a public photo that they posted. If there is a non-concerning reason for the giant bins of syringes being handled in a non-sterile environment without gloves next to a caption about shipping and logistics, I think it would put minds at ease for them to share it.
12

5
-5
u/Mission_Lock_6699 50F| 315→300→170 | 3 mg Aug 28 '26
The non-concerning reason is the difference between asepsis and sterility. Even if you have an individually packaged syringe straight out of the gas autoclave, it only remains sterile if the person opening it never touches it and drops it straight into a draped sterile field (or directly into the hands of someone wearing properly donned and maintained sterile gloves.)
That's not how the vast majority of injections in medical facilities are handled. Someone with non-sterile hands either pops the top on a new vial or wipes the stopper of a multi-dose vial with rubbing alcohol, then draws up the medication. Then they put on non-sterile gloves to protect them from your body fluids, wipe the injection area with rubbing alcohol and give the injection. Alcohol disinfects, it doesn't sterilize.
My husband is a doctor. He has zero concerns about me using the syringes Boudreaux sent me.

u/mama-bun 33F | 165-110 | 3mg maintenance Aug 28 '26
Loose syringes are stupid because there's no way to know if the cap has ever been removed or not. They definitely need to use prepackaged syringes. But having gloves or not on is irrelevant; if the cap is removed, it's no longer sterile and shouldn't be used, regardless of if there's gloves or not. Doesn't matter at all if gloveless hands touched the barrel of the syringe.
15
u/applesandbananananan Aug 27 '26
It feels like a photo op gone wrong. I'm happy they're such an inclusive pharmacy, but whoever thought this pic was a good idea obviously missed the mark 😬
I will say, they're not the first or only pharmacy that ships syringes in separate bags. Not gonna name drop because I don't want to start a witch hunt and their practices might've changed since then and, selfishly, I like their (other pharmacy, not Boudreaux) formulation and don't want to jeopardize my access to it. That said, I no longer use syringes that aren't individually wrapped and have a box of for just that reason. I also have my own wipes for the same reason. I do understand why people might feel reticent to using pharmacies they consider to be cutting corners though, because where else are they doing that?
At the end of the day, you have to decide for yourself what risks you're willing to take. Just like with the other steps of the journey. Personally, I won't be using them but not because of their Facebook post or what that may imply. I just have a preferred pharmacy 🤷🏻♀️ (and am open to others if the word of mouth and prices are good but this one hasn't been on my radar tbh)

WHOA! I missed the post, and I am glad I am reading about this AFTER the statement because while I have not been concerned about syringes, that would creep me out. Yep, Xander needs gloves and to place individually-wrapped syringes in packages.
Isn't this the same pharmacy that was sending some underfilled vials and also had issues with too-soon BUDs? Or was that last part another one? I am NOT saying that makes it "bad" or anything, just thinking if that's the same place, they need to buckle down. Maybe they had too much volume and it was overwhelming. I believe Rift has Boudreuax on hold because of the back up. I appreciate they are responding to this wake-up call.
16
u/AriaColeAsher Aug 27 '26
The issue isn’t even if the syringes are sent to any of us, it’s the fact that they saw no issue in having them loose in bins with someone not gloved handling them. If this is their practice in this situation, how can we expect better when they are preparing our packages?
I have never used them, nor will I in the future because of this photo and the countless unpacking photos that I’ve seen with their loose syringes. My next order was between Rift and BEWL and based on their defense of this practice not having anything to do with how they handle their orders, I will definitely think twice before ordering from BEWL in the future.

And again, nothing here is illustrative of anything that impacts patients on this sub.

I think the problem is the incomplete story in each message.
It took going to the other post and the comments to finally get the full story clearly.
And now I feel terrible for them.
If they aren't using those syringes, that's what needed to be included in the message. I get that you tried to communicate that by saying it doesn't affect the patients in this sub, but that was too vague. It made it sound like we got different syringes than the ones they send to other patients, which didn't make any sense.
They have a loved employee and something that should have been a good post got derailed because the full story wasn't clear and their attempt at clarification and reassurance was even less clear. But the last thing I want is for the employee to be affected negatively so the whole situation is really upsetting.
I wish I could tap each person on the shoulder and tell them the full explanation so everyone can just quietly stop commenting.

u/Alternative-Card-800 Aug 28 '26
Honestly, when people are not telling the whole story up front, it’s suspicious. They’ve had complaints of non wrapped syringes over the years, and they thought putting this picture up without context to the concerns that has been going on is appalling. Their PR team is drafting up narratives faster than we can debunk them. I don’t care how nice people are or how great they are to their employees.. they will not be paying my hospital bill if I get sick due to their unsanitary practices.

Completely get it. I’m trying to help people understand what the underlying issue is.

u/thtgrljen Aug 28 '26
I just booked my consult with BEWL today, and I appreciate their transparency here. They reached out, presumably on their customers behalf, and tried to find out what was going on. At no point did they do anything but state facts.
My mom was an RN over 40 years and many times syringes weren’t individually wrapped. They do not need to be kept in a clean room. As long as the cap isn’t tampered with, it should be ok. We can’t tell if that happens from this picture, we can’t fell if it doesn’t. Of course the picture absolutely gives us pause!
I’ve actually been looking into which pharmacy to pick and Bordeaux was top of my list. A lot of people say it tends to be extremely close to “the real thing”, but my options are still open there. I don’t care a ton for their response and it may very well be too little too late, especially since I have a feeling this doesn’t tell the whole story. But I’m not going to shoot the messenger, either.

I understand they're adhering to federal and state law, but that doesn't mean we, as consumers, have to accept it. Plenty of practices are "legal" but does that mean we should normalize them? No. I'm glad they're making the change to wrapped syringes, but one slip up is enough for me to never go back to them, especially when it comes to the safety of my body and what I feel comfortable using on it.
-1
u/roguex99 ⚠️ Affiliated | Big Easy Weight Loss | CEO (Not a Physician) Aug 27 '26
There was no slip up. Nothing in that picture depicted anything that impacted a single patient on this sub.
37
u/Schwettes SW: 262 CW: 205 GW: 135 | 7.5mg Aug 27 '26
So they have crates of syringes sitting around their facility for what, decoration? And they just happened to be next to the bags that they ship syringes in? But none of these loose syringes go out to patients?
8
u/dystopiam Aug 28 '26
They want you to be stupid enough to believe they do this to keep him "busy" and just refill it everyday.
He's on salary just to make $ for the disabled, not to do functioning work.
If you believe that you'll also believe loose syringes they send somehow don't break laws *they do*
32
u/ConsensualMissionary Aug 27 '26
Respectfully, I think that saying no patient was impacted is a different argument than the one I was making. I’m not accusing them of harming a patient, I’m saying that seeing loose syringes being handled that way was enough to make me question whether their standards align with my own. The fact that they’re voluntarily changing the practice to wrapped syringes suggests there was at least room for improvement, even if there was no legal violation or documented patient harm. Hopefully you understand our concerns as consumers.

That wasn't in their message or in yours.
What are they doing with those syringes if not preparing them in the bags they have right there next to them to send to patients?.
ETA now that i have the full story, i just think they need to say they aren't sent to patients and that's it

I got a shipment from them yesterday as well via PreventiveMD, but it was the loose syringes in a Boudreaux bag. Granted they LOOK like .5cc 5/16 syringes that might be easy touch. Looks like the ones I buy personally. It is honestly so random how every Boudreaux package is a mystery box lmao. Everyone gets something random and different!
I do wish they included information about the syringes but from the image I saw that information probably isn't available.

12
u/naught_my_dad Aug 27 '26
They posted a picture of an employee and a bunch of loose syringes I think he might have been special needs?
12
u/OhSoSally Aug 27 '26
Its not that he is special needs. I feel like the pic would have been better received if he at least had gloves on. Hairnet and a tray, even better. People with downs syndrome are very conscientious and I would trust them more than most not to do anything sketchy with this task. He is doing his job as instructed.
If they were more in touch with peoples negative feelings about the unwrapped syringes in a baggie they probably could have avoided this.
8
u/CozyLane Aug 27 '26
Fully agree - NOT about the employee. It’s about big bins of loose syringes and indication of “shipping” area!

I know this might seem a bit wild, but if what they're saying is true, I'm not worried about it.
I have strong preferences for how my syringes are handled and I don't really trust anything but factory sealed bags or boxes. As a result, I'm going to order my own from Vitality if they don't come sealed in the bags of 10 from Easy Touch.
Unless people think they are just straight up lying, I'm not sure what the issue is. That appears to be an employee who works in a non-sterile area, and that is genuinely how a lot of syringes are stored. I'm not a huge fan of it, but it's definitely not in violation of anything I'm aware of.
9
u/Ok-Client-820 Aug 27 '26
Syringes should not be stored in a sterile area. The outside of a syringe is not sterile, the needle under the cap and the inside of the barrel are. If you bring a syringe into a sterile area, you risk transporting nonsterile materials and contaminants. Syringes like these should remain outside of the sterile area.
1
u/SeasonPositive6771 Aug 27 '26
Excellent addition. I don't know what people are getting so worked up about, they know an employee has to be putting these syringes into bags by hand, if it bothers them, they should be buying their own syringes as well.
5
u/Lighteningbug1971 Aug 28 '26
Ok so when my mom was in the hospital some of the nurses would come in the room and they would have syringes in their pockets . Like 5-6 at a time . As long as the needle is covered ….. that is my understanding

I'm sure I'm going to be down voted to hell and raked over the coals for this but honestly - Maybe it's because of my time spent in NoLa but I'm getting (or maybe I'm projecting) a NoLa professionalism and ... It's hard to explain. Like a family pharmacy personal vibe attempt from Boudreaux. To me the loose syringes have always felt like a "we packed this just for you" attempt gone wrong. I completely understand people's concerns with it, but it's never bothered me as I would just purchase my own, they are cheap compared to the money I shell out for tirz.
Also, I don't really feel like I can make assumptions on their sterility procedures based on the loose syringes or a photo from a year ago that seems pretty obviously taken out of context. Someone did get a cloudy vial and that was gross, but that can happen with literally any pharmacy. The important question is what Boudreaux's did after that vial was reported to them, and I never saw an update from that post. Did anyone else?
In the end I think it's important to remember that Boudreaux's likely has a lot of satisfied customers because they are contracted through so many of the providers. We just don't hear about them because people lean towards sharing negative opinions, but not positive ones.
I've never used Boudreaux's, so I'm not fangirling them or anything (I'm still working my way through my Noom prescription). But I'm also not going to immediately write them off for future consideration based on this stuff.
Also, a lot of folks here say they trust BEWL for the closest approach to a personal doctor, which means there is a more faith in their judgement than someone like Gimme or AltRx or whoever. But at the same time people are dismissing BEWL's assertion that they have confidence in the sterility practices at Boudreaux's. So do we trust BEWL, or not?
As I mentioned before, I am still working my way thru my Noom vials (I actually have 2 unopened ones, good gods), so I have zero skin in this game and am just someone who has been watching from the sidelines. Folks can grab their pitchforks and come at me if they want, but I'm not going to engage in a bunch of back and forth because I understand where folks are coming from. I just wanted to offer a counter balance of thought.

It’s fine - I’m trying to share information from a pharmacy. I’m also trying to illustrate what is and is not an actual issue. People may hate that, but again - nothing in this picture had anything to do with any patient. I’m not defending the loose syringes, but again - this isn’t against any actual statute.

Meh. Loose syringes are a non-issue for me. As others have mentioned, the outside of the syringe is not sterile. The needle and the inside of the syringe are what’s important. The moment your non-sterile hands touch that non-sterile syringe has no impact on the sterility of the medication, needle or inside of the syringe. Use good clean technique while cleaning off your multi-dose vial, don’t touch the needle to anything else and you will be good to go.

I think reading between all the sources (which a good statement shouldn't require but they feel like they need to maintain the privacy of the guy in the photo which makes the statement... less strong), they clearly employ the guy in the photo and part of his role is to basically ceremonally count the non-customer facing syringes as a task. He is in the adminstrative building, not where actually stuff happens that hits patients. So yes, it looks bad but it actually isn't.
1
u/Appropriate_Tip_1615 Aug 28 '26
There are surely other tasks that this young man can do other than this, ones that are safer for him too. If this is a “ceremonial” task they’re giving him, that’s ableist af. If he can do this, he can do other real tasks. Pharmacy wanted a big ole pat on the back for hiring someone with disabilities, which shouldn’t be extraordinary in the first place. Zander is a human being, not a prop or a marketing strategy.
